The Chemist has the…read moreproximity, but just up the hill a little is the glory of The Oak, a two-roomed beauty full of local character, with two bars, lovely wooden features and plenty of places to cosy up. In the bar room proper you've got little round tables and benches and comfy banquettes, in the dining room you've got beautifully laid cutlery and menus just waiting for your custom. The Oak is about as homely as you can get, with a truly awesome open fire (which served to thaw my icy self out on our night of arrival here for Christmas... seriously, have we managed to have a temperature somewhere above freezing since the start of December?!?), tiled floor, stone walls and a warm welcome alongside a nice selection of ales. It was the very first place I had a drink with the BF when we arrived after the long and arduous journey to our first Christmas together. That evening beverage in the pub made the nerve-wracking experience of meeting his parents far easier. As expected they were wonderful, but the wonderful Oak did calm my frazzled stress receptors rather a bit! It's a free house so you'll find guest ales aplenty, and they do a perfectly solid white wine spritzer which I've always enjoyed. Even when it's crowded it has that warm, bustling ambience one has learned to appreciate during this festive period. As long as we have family friends in Saundersfoot, I'm sure The Oak will be a regular stop-off for many years to come.

Wouldn't you just love to live in a village where one of the few local pubs is right next door? I…read moreknow I would. Well, my other half's parents do. Adjacent to their beach house is a quaint, quirky and very lovely little pub that everyone refers to as 'The Chemist'. It's exceptionally handy if you live on The Strand as you can pretty much just stagger home after a few, but it also boasts a smoking area at the back with decking, patio heaters and a super beach view as the Strand is in fact the closest street to the sand. What the Chemist might lack in drinks variety (particularly if you're not an ale drinker), it makes up for in atmosphere. You'll find older gents who obviously come here every night, propping up the bar and bending the ears of the staff while supping their half bitter. You'll find glammed up dollybirds having a swift one before exiting into Tenby. And you'll find walkers who've just done the trek to Wisemann's Bridge and come back to reward themselves with a cheeky drink. Occasionally the owners will put out free food to nibble on, like sausages for example, which they did while I was there last. It's friendly and welcoming, and somehow manages to feel closed and cosy in the winter yet airy and light in the summer. The decorations are fab too and you'll find yourself chortling away at numerous humorous signs dotted about the place. This is one of those bars where everyone probably will know your name if you've been a few times. If it's crowded it can get a little claustrophobic, but don't let that put you off as the ambience will soon see you right.

So of course we were not particularly surprised when this gastro pub was also moonlighting as the local Thai. What was surprising was the menu, featuring approximately 12 Thai dishes and balanced exquisitely with 12 pub classics including both pad ka pow and boozy cod and chips. The overall experience had an aire of delay when the waitress greeted us at the door and then hastily rejoined a conversation with her regulars. When we finally made our way to our table, we at once noticed that the pandemic has had no impact in the space between customers in this pub. Any efforts to minimise infection were focused on protecting the staff in their very rare appearances in the dining room. Overall, the experience is as follows: Mayo: it was excellent watching out neighbour scarf approximately 37 packets of mayo while we patiently awaitin the staff to return with the 3 sachets of ketchup that we had requested. Staff: it's difficult to remember the staff considering how very little we saw them. Very short staffed for a very busy pub. Meal: I cannot say a bad word about the surf and turf. Steak was excellent. Mussels, excellent. Onion rings, possibly the best I've ever had. Dessert, nearly called my mum. Cleanliness: gash. I watched a spider dangling behind my date's head. I refused a set of silverware due to uncleanliness. Overall experience: 10/10 I'm on holiday.
