By far the absolute best hot sauce we have ever had! When we moved, we had it shipped to Missouri!

The cafe/bakery has a few fresh baked goods daily (don't think any vegan or no gluten-free…read moreoptions). Their website lists about a half dozen, but the last time I was here there were just two: the sourdough chocolate chip cookie and the matcha and black sesame butter mochi. I'm guessing those are regularly available (they also do fun seasonal specials, so be sure to check their socials), but don't come with the expectation that there's going to be a big variety. The drinks include coffees, teas, and a variety of matcha. For me, this is NOT the best matcha in Portland. Matcha Mood is. The matcha here is good (maybe in the top three in the city), but the iced matcha with miso maple syrup and almond milk I recently had for $9+ was just okay. The drink is (literally) half the size as one at Macha Mood for the same price, and there wasn't any flavor of miso or maple. I've seen some internet buzz claiming THIS IS THE BEST... as a local, I don't agree. And that's okay; you might find your new favorite here, so it's absolutely worth visiting. They also do other fun spontaneous matcha flavors, so be sure to follow them on social! Check out their shop as well: loads of chili crisps and hot sauces, condiments and spices, jams, matcha powders and loose tea, pickles and other preserved foods, sweets, vinegars and oils, fermentation ware and kitchen goods, etc.

Also the matcha black sesame butter mochi was out of this world, truly unexpected. Great food and very good service. There was outdoor seating outside and the inside had plenty of room though the cafe was pretty busy when we arrived. Definitely worth checking out!

The produce can be hit or miss, but the mushrooms are always prime. Same with the fresh herbs. Massive lengths of garlic chives, absolute trees worth of mint, and lots of other weird and delicious leaves of various sorts. I was able to find plenty of pre-chopped frozen lemongrass, which I now will only buy frozen, becuase it's so fresh tasting and not as much of a pain to prepare. I made a soup where I used a full half cup of the stuff, which is never something I'd have done if I had to chop that by hand! Half the items don't have a price sticker or a sign that states the prices, but when you get to the register, they're happy to do a price check for you so that you know what you're paying. I'm assuming that with such a small physical space, and that variety of stuff, it's hard to constantly keep on top of prices on the shelves. If the cashier were annoyed at being asked the price, I'd not shop here, but I've always had them be happy to tell us the prices with no issues. Seriously though the selection is insane. There's stuff that I'd never imagine I can find easily in New England, but it's right there on the shelf. The noodle variety is great, with plenty of gluten free noodles for those who need it. Plenty of dried mushrooms and tea too!

The fish quality is sooo good and the salmon set had so much fish in it. I was so full at the end but I wanted to keep eating. The squid and scallop are both incredibly soft and flavorful. Each bite blew my mind! I had soo much difficulty locating where the entrance was and where we could buy food (although that is mostly due to my poor sense of direction). But the place to purchase is right when you enter, the door to your right. You then walk up the stairs and turn into the cafeteria.

The uni prices & freshness though are UNMATCHED. A tray of uni for $28 is a crazy deal; prices are even better for a POUND of broken uni. They source from different places depending on the season. March seems to be the last of Maine uni season; we had New Brunswick uni in April. I'd skip the sashimi sets - it was underwhelming for $15 each. The squid, salmon, and ikura were fine; tuna was a bit fishy. Scallops are usually my favorite, but they were just okay here. The uni is excellent. Insant rice & miso soup are available for purchase for $3 each. The staff canteen has sushi vinegar & all the fixings. Parking is available outside.
