We really liked this hotel. It's not sparkly new or fancy but this is what we liked: check in lady was friendly, great towels, pillows, sheets and bed. Good size mini fridge. We were in an upstairs room. The window was new and clean, opened easily. We could see the beautiful sunset colors. It's red, white and has nice planters. Wish the bathroom floor was a little cleaner but it wasn't bad enough to take off a star. Easy walk to the marina. read more

This motel has a great location next to the Marine Aquarium and fishing boats. It is clean and the bed is comfortable. You can park right in front of your room. The rate is very affordable. However the walls are paper thin. I stayed in room 102 and could hear the man talking and snoring next door to me. Also bring your own blanket and fan. read more

I noticed it's been awhile since anyone has posted. I just stayed there last night. I was hesitant on staying, each person has there own views. I stayed in room 134 it smelled fresh when I walked in, clean, I noticed they had a keurig coffee maker, microwave and refrigerator. They have Wi-Fi, cable, fish cleaning area outside the motel. You are walking distance from fine restaurants, convenient stores. It's not fancy but I loved my bed and slept like a baby. Cute, cozy "throwback/old school" motel in the center of small, less touristy section of the Oregon coast. A working fishing village, easily walkable, and as a bonus, you get the feeling you're in the middle of a chapter of Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea!!" You don't get a room here at Captain John's to be in the "lap of luxury." You get a room here to escape back to a different time and a waaaaay different place. We found our room here to be quiet, comfortable, and completely pretension free!! Nothing fancy, but just what you need for a restful night, possibly before (or after...) a big fishing trip in the open seas. Heck, they even have facilities to clean your catch and park your (smaller) boat and trailer. Check-in was easy and friendly, parking's convenient, bed was comfortable, TV and WIFI worked, rates were very reasonable, and there was fresh, hot coffee (in the office) in the morning. We took a great sunset stroll around town and walked out to the docks and a nice little stretch of beach. What's not to like?? I have no words strong enough to describe this disgusting horror of a place and it's wicked owner. I called and requested "the nicest room they have". Captain Johns is the only motel near the harbor where my friend's slip is. I wanted to surprise him when he came back from fishing with a comfy mattress and a hot shower. Instead I was told my room had been accidentally given away and I could have a queen room at a discount. Too late for anything else do I agreed I have no words to describe what was awaiting me. That's why I took pictures. I can't find where to attach so briefly tons of black mold, what appeared to be a halfhearted attempt to clean blood off the wall, filthiest sink I've ever seen, and the entire Taco Bell chain seemed to have exploded in the never-cleaned microwave. But, oh, the bed. By this time I realized I must not touch the bed. So I took a washcloth to peel back a bit of the bedspread. It revealed a bare boxspring that appeared as someone had used it as a urinal. In a fugue state I stumbled back to the office where the lady seemed shocked that I would have a problem. "It's an old hotel". So I broke out the pictures and shamed her on each one until I was refunded. I understand that there might be nicer parts to this motel, but do not take the chance. They give rooms, even prepaid reserved rooms, to the highest bidder; then with a crocodile smile and a complete disregard for your sanity, health and safety hand you a key to the hooker/tweaker annex. I mistakenly sat on a chair to make a call for rescue. It was vinyl and I thought it would be ok. I have three large red itchy bites now. Serious. Is there an agency that governs these places? Enjoyed my stay here. Very authentic and rustic but who wants to stay in a 4 star hotel when you're out fishing!! The morning views of the coast are breathtaking. The rooms aren't fancy but everything works and the staff is very helpful. There are signs everywhere about their cleaning protocols which made me feel safe enough to stay a whole week. The people here are very helpful. Loved that I could walk to all the restaurants nearby. I will def come back when I get a chance. read more

If you are looking for a clean well run motel with a classic 1950s vibe you have come to the right place. This motel has friendly service and well maintained rooms. Though some of the furniture is outdated and worn it's rooms are still comfortable and serve their basic purpose. This may not excite you, but it's location is what makes this motel really special. It is surrounded by a beautiful harbor featuring inexpensive and delicious restaurants. It is also in close proximity to many whale watching hot spots in the area. My mom reserved a room here for my wife, kid, and I for a last minute visit on 4th of July weekend and it was one of few places left with available rooms. I remember staying here when I was a kid so I wasn't expecting the life of luxury, especially during a pandemic. The room we got was non-smoking with 2 queen beds. As we walked in, the dude a few doors down was outside smoking. The room itself looked a little aged and, upon closer inspection, was very dirty as well. There was garbage and random items left by previous guests under the beds and behind the TV. The curtains were dusty and had spider webs along them and we're broken and couldn't close all the way. One of the pillows had what appeared to be a bloodstain. Lastly, the wifi cuts out about every 30 sec so you can't really use it. There are a lot of amenities that modern hotels/motels offer that this place doesn't have, but for some reason they think they should charge you a little more than other hotels because? I will rate 2/5 only because it's not the worst hotel I've been to. The lady working at check in was very nice and helpful too. read more

We ended up here because all the pet-friendly rooms in Coos Bay were booked. This is an older motel and judging from our room nothing has been updated for 15-20 years. The furniture is old, scratched, dented, and broken. The lampshade was frayed and stained. Towels were clean and there was plenty of hot water and no bugs. However, the bedding was so ancient it was paper thin and had faint stains which we hoped were old. Sorry Capt. John, I can't recommend this place. There's an RV place across the street with yurt accommodations, which might be good. And DO try The Portside Restaurant next door...fabulous food! read more

This is a clean (yet dated) motel just outside Coos Bay Oregon. It's in close proximity to Shore Acres State Park and the Charleston Harbor. From the business website you can see that it tends to cater to the fisherman with a "fish house" kitchen for cleaning and cooking your crab and fish. I chose this motel as I was hoping to do some crabbing while in the area but time did not allow. It is basic, but does offer WIFI (no issues during my stay). The in-room television is the old fashion tube style and the rooms are straight out of the 1970's. The room rates, however, reflect the quality and amenities and if you prefer modern and want a "Hot Tub" instead of a "Hot Pot" of boiling water to cook your crab, you might want to look elsewhere. If you want basic accommodations and a feel for the local flavor of a working fishing community this place is on the money. Note that this Motel does also offer weekly and monthly rates and so you might be sharing the motel with some semi-permanent guests. Upon pulling-up and opening my trunk to unload my luggage, I was greeted by, let's call him "Crack-Head-Carl" who lives on the first floor. I saw him exit his room when he saw me pull-in, and he approached my vehicle while scoping out what was inside. He then proceeded to tell a joke about Nuns getting killed on the Cape Arago Hwy...as he got to the "punch-line", he turned and walked away...then turned around to return for his second act which was another joke of mostly gibberish and then walked back into his room...welcome to the Inn :-\ My room was on the second floor (no elevators) and the only window opens to a common exterior hallway shared by all upstairs rooms. I never feel comfortable leaving the window open with this configuration and since there is no AC (only heater) it did get a bit stuffy inside once I closed the window to sleep. Since the rooms face a large parking lot you might also get an earful from the drunken fishermen as they return to the motel in the evening. All in all, the motel remains a good value as long as you know what to expect when staying here. read more

yeah capt johns has its drawbacks but if you want a place on the water for crabbing and cooking your crab you cannot beat it, I used to be the front desk person there and I have to say that the rooms are always clean and a good price, yes it is dated in its look but I am one of these people that I am not staying in a motel for it amenities but a good place to rest my head from all the sites I am seeing wherever I am at, I am a no frills girl and as long as I have a clean room with clean sheets and towels and bathroom then I am good to go! They also have a room that is set up like an apt with a living room and kitchen and a separate bedroom, good place to stay if you have kids but remember there is no swimming pool or play area but you they can ride their bikes in the large parking lot. read more

This was the greatest hotel for our early morning fishing trip. It is located close enough to walk to the water and affordable. We had several families reserved and they were able to put our rooms together. Yes, some of the rooms could use a little upgrading but for the comfort and ease of being close to the docks it suited our needs and budget. They served fresh coffee and donuts in the lobby for a quick morning snack. The owners were very friendly and made us feel welcome. I would stay there again. read more

A mixed bag - very old, has the mildew curse of so many non-remodeled motels along the Oregon coast (I gagged a few times, opening the cupboards), and poor little Charleston is and always has been a rough little fishing town aside from the handful of tourist spots. That said, I enjoyed my time here - the staff was friendly and helpful, and the place was quiet (mid-week) and as clean and tidy as possible given its, um, vintage. Strong and stable wifi, with two good restaurants within walking distance (The Portside for halibut and local oysters, Miller's for a huge Dungeness crab cocktail and great local beer). The motel, like the town, is charming in its tumbledown way and the people in the local service industry work hard and deal with insufferable dicks on a regular basis so be nice, adjust your expectations, put dab of menthol under your nose, and enjoy! read more

We had a pet friendly room, room 111. We have stayed here many time over the last few years and in this room again and again. It is pet friendly: this room has gone down hill dramatically. The walls were stained with brown spots from people's pets. The window had mold along the seal. There were no decorations left only nails in the wall. The floor was sticky with whatever it was cleaned with. The toilet seat was falling off. The bathroom was dirty and needed some paint. The sheets had stains on them. The blanket and pillows were the most uncomfortable thing about the room. I understand this is a per friendly room but it was very gross. I did not get to relax or feel like I was on vacation because of the cleanliness of the room. It is hard to find a pet friendly room and this is why we have been staying at this hotel for over 3 years now. However they have the pet friendly side of this hotel go. We got a room right by the fish cleaning station which smelt HORRIBLE! He moved us from there into a room with a broken heater, tv barely worked, the room was not very clean, there was a sharpie under one of our fitted sheets, and without a heater we only had one extra blanket. We called the front desk multiple times and never got a pickup until we called the main number with a cell phone. He finally brought us a tiny space heater. We would never recommend and definitely won't be back. Would give lower star if possible. read more

The hotel is extremely outdated. It smelled like an old antique store. Green carpet, mixed art did not go together. Paper signs laminated everywhere, on not to do's. Faucet in our bathroom, pressure was too high, water would skirt everywhere. Shower fixtures need to be replaced too. Overall, I would never stay here again. Very outdated, from the decor, fixtures and it didn't look completely cleaned. The hotel needs an uplift, stairs to our room are old and paint is chipped. My suggestion is to stay in Newport or in a larger city. Save your money! read more

Great location for the traveler, close to Cape Arago and Sunset Bar,,,,,short drive to downtown Coos Bay. Lots of fisherman stay here, so they get up early and do not stay up partying all nite long! Old school motel, but clean rooms, comfortable beds and safe location. Less than 300 yards to several restaurants and convenience stores. Rooms have mini fridge and microwave plus hi-speed wifi. Coos Bay doesnt have lots of new franchise hotels, so this little inn is your best bet. read more

Thank goodness for Yelp and a positive review of an inexpensive hotel! We've been vacationing down the Oregon coast and after camping the past two nights, we were ready for a shower to which we didn't have to walk a block. But not willing to pay a some outrageous price for a plain old room to sleep in, I was only browsing the $ selections on Yelp and to make matters more complicated, we were traveling with a dog. So I made the call and find out that for $60 we could get a clean room with the dog! Granted, it is late Sept. and Thursday (maybe the price is higher during the summer season or on the weekend) but we are super happy with the clean, yet outdated, room. Plus, walk a block to Miller's on Boat Basin Rd for delicious, not too expensive food. So pleased that we followed the Yelp reviews. read more

First off, if you are a high maintenence person- this will not work for you. I drove from San Francisco to this place at Charleston Harbor. My family was 'vacationing' at the RV park across the street from the parking lot of this motel. I thought, what the heck! Perfect! I don't have to camp out, I can stay in a warm bed with an actual bathroom and be very happy. I wasn't expecting much and I was pleasantly surprised. This is definitely a throwback to the '80's. No computerized check in. I mean they still ask for your license plate number in order to park in their lot. Check in was a bit of a debacle considering I showed up at 11:30 PM and well, the attendant was about to go to sleep. Once I got my room key, and yeah, it's an actual key. No key card action here, this is old school. It's a 2 level motel so I got a room on the second level. It was a queen size bed with an ugly green and gold comforter, matching curtains and green carpet. Nonetheless, it was a clean room. The bathroom was very basic...no hairdryer..good water pressure and signs all over the bathrooom asking guests to not wash their crabs in the bathrooom sink. It's a fishing village, so that request sounded reasonable. I wasn't going to be washing anything in the sink except my hands. The one drawback was that there wasn't any A/C. It got a bit stuffy at night ...otherwise for $150 for the weekend...I would do it again. It sure beats the alternative. read more

Between this motel, the great food and the spectacular scenery 4 miles away, our two days in Charleston will be a forever memory. Loved our room...very clean, nice borders on the top of the walls, soft blanket, VERY comfy mattress, bigger than most TVs and great water pressure in the shower. We had a king bed....didn't bring our dog because for obvious reasons some rooms are not used for pets. We normally try not to travel with dogs as the rooms in some places we have stayed have that smell that is difficult to remove. We saw some complaints on some reviews and I told the manager she should really reply to them because this place is too nice to have bad reviews. Sure, some things happen, but they seem like the kind of folks who would fix anything that would give them a bad review. Tried a few of the local places for food.....they were OK, but Miller's was Fantastic....best hamburger...a home made patty.....and fish tacos to die for....flaky fish, nice, not greasy breading on a corn taco....we ate there several times and look forward to going back. Location of this hotel is superb.....4 miles from the incredibly beautiful coastal cliff at Shore Acres. The gardens there are beautiful in summer and in winter they are lit up, but the winter also gives a special treat.....high surf and waves crashing against the many rocks shooting up into the sky like a small atomic bomb.....our photographs are incredible. We are amazed that more people weren't there to see what we saw. We had seen the waves in August last year, but they pale in comparison to what a storm in February offers.....they looked like the postcards we saw....actually even better.....the only reason I am anxious to get home is to get the photos made into a Shutterfly book and having some blown up. So, make Charleston, Captain John's, Miller's, and Shore Acres a destination !!! (I am not a crab lover, but this is crab heaven if you are!) read more

The other reviews amaze me given our radically different experience. Maybe they save the room that we stayed in for pet owners, but I have never had a worse experience. We almost left, choosing to pay for another room somewhere else, but it was pretty late before we really took a look around. The room was nothing short of revolting. The carpets were so filthy and stained that we wouldn't even take off our shoes. The room smelled musty and unpleasant. We found it ironic that they had signs about taking an inventory of the linens as they were also very stained. I went to plug in the lamp and found it to be one of the oldest electrical plugs I've ever seen and the cord was wrapped in electrical tape - not safe! I wish I could add photos to this review! Pet owners beware, even though this hotel advertises as pet friendly, there are very few areas to walk your dog to do it's business - almost all of the grassy areas were marked "no trespassing" or with signs that indicated the dogs weren't welcome to use it - not that you had to pick up any deposits, but that you couldn't use it at all. The only redeeming feature was it's proximity to the state parks/beach access, but you'd be better off sleeping in your car! read more

There's a fish market right on the docks and if you go out past charter boats, there's a jetty with a little beach that overlooks the harbor mouth! A recent stay made me so discouraged about this place. The word disgusting comes to mind. My family has been visiting Charleston for 40 years. Several times, we stayed here. However, this year was horrible. It was sooooo dirty. The smoke alarm was hanging out of the ceiling by a wire. The comforter had brown stains that looked fresh. The sheets were full of hair. There appeared to be a blood stain too. The bathroom was bad and smelled like urine. They need to clean this place up. Our family had booked two nights, but could only stay 1 night since it was so gross. For $90 a night, I expect clean. It can be old, but clean is a must. read more

This is great old school Americana at it's finest. The owners Paul/Jan are very nice humble people that take pride & keep it clean with tons of parking. This is a fisherman's dream as they allow parking for boats on trailers (WOW)! It's features a fish cleaning room with crab boilers to boot. Sure it smells some what like a fish market on the outside but not on the inside. Rates are dirt cheap, plus there's only a 1% room tax. It's a great place for the 40 & up crowd because it will bring back memories of how things used to be however, may not appeal so much for the younger or yuppie crowds. Sure it's dated and not a modern cookie cutter chain but that's what makes it great! The location is hidden at the quiet south end of the bay and a real diamond in the rough. Cheers! read more
