Captain John has a route that he follows but is always willing to veer off that path if there's something at sea that might be cool for the passengers to see. Last night, we had the pleasure of seeing minke whales and harbor porpoises. Captain John made followed the path of the whale and slowed down so all could see. I cannot speak highly enough of Captain John's hospitality on his boat and look forward to heading out again next year!

Which was perfect because it's not a long off shore whale watching trip where you're going to get bored and possibly not see anything but water. This excursion takes you only a short distance from the shore and you're able to view land at all times. The boat was clean and comfortable. The captain was a friendly fellow and pretty funny. He did a nice job explaining some of the history of the area, pointed out some noteable waterfront homes and who their owners were and pulled up a few lobster traps from the water to get a close up and learn a little more about the delicious crustaceans. The trip is reasonably priced (which is a plus for any family vacationing in the area because EVERYTHING here is pretty expensive). The weather was excellent and my group had a really nice time with the crew and other folks on the tour with us. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking to fill a few hours throughout the day and gain a little local knowledge of the area.

I found the tour operators and Captain to be friendly, professional and have a focus on safety. I heard them say that the captain has a US coast guard Masters license. Maine Duck Tours is a great way to not only see some of the key highlights of Portland, but also spend time in Casco Bay. It is the only tour company in the city that offers this variety. It's perfect for people of all ages, but particularly for groups that are intergenerational or for families. And, if you are really into history, you will love Dugan. He knows his stuff! Glancing over, we spotted people boarding a nearby vessel and rushed over. It was the Portland Discovery Harbor Sights tour, about to depart. I quickly explained our situation to a crew member, who conferred with the captain and with real generosity waved us aboard with one minute to spare, trusting us to pay at the ticket booth upon return. We were genuinely moved. My mother was visiting Maine briefly, and getting her out to see the lighthouses meant everything. I learned so much about Maine's lobster industry including how lobsters are caught, which ones are kept for restaurants, and why certain lobsters are returned to the water. It was fascinating to learn about the process and get a behind-the-scenes look at such an important part of Maine's culture. One of my favorite parts was getting to choose my own lobster. It was only $12 to keep the lobster I caught, and then I took it over to Portland Lobster Co. (just about a one-minute walk away) where they cooked it for an additional $15. The meal came with corn on the cob and a baked potato, and I was able to enjoy it right on the waterfront with plenty of seating, additional menu options, and live music. The boat ride itself was about 1 hour and 45 minutes and included beautiful views of Portland's coastline, seals, and other famous landmarks. The crew was wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, and they made sure everyone had a chance to participate. Even with 17 people onboard, no one was overlooked. They also took photos of everyone, which was a thoughtful touch. A few tips for future visitors: the boat has limited restroom availability, so I recommend using the restroom before boarding. Also, if you have time, definitely plan to enjoy your lobster afterward at Portland Lobster Co. it completes the experience. This was such a memorable way to experience Portland and a must-do for anyone visiting Maine.
