You went to this place for the ice cream, and food was always an afterthought, but you always got both. Another reviewer nailed it--you bought the tradition of the place and it's sad that a burger that is twice as expensive as others I had bought there tastes WORSE. The ice cream is no longer made there and they are moving away from everything Cappies was. If you are looking to visit this place and expecting to experience it how it was, do not go. They want to be a village diner now, not a drive-in. I understand that with new owners we should expect change but with change (and the prices) you'd think it would at least be good food. Seeing all the drama surrounding this place lately has been so sad. Having grown up with Cappie's, and my dad and grandfather having been friends with Cappie himself, I've always held such a fondness in my heart for this spot. As have most locals. Sure, when a new owner comes in, they will make changes. Sometimes, they'll be good ones. It sounds like some of the menu items have improved, and adding variety is always a good thing--except when it's to the detriment of tradition. You see, when these people bought Cappie's, they didn't just buy a restaurant. They bought tradition. They bought ice cream for the kids after a game. They bought the summer memories of thousands of people. They bought the respect of the Cappie's name. They bought the values brought in by Cappie, Donna, Kim, and all the summer-job kids, plus the whole Cappie's family. Then, they added booze, removed long-standing best-selling menu items (Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream, anyone?), raised prices even more, unrelentingly and baselessly fired Kim (an employee for nearly 50 years), and repeatedly got nasty with customers and critics both online and off. I dare anyone to agree that if someone were to buy Jumpin' Jack's in Scotia and make these kinds of changes, the community far and wide wouldn't revolt. I drive by Cappie's now, and the parking lot is bare. The proof is in the parking. This is NOT Cappie's. It's not his legacy. It doesn't deserve to bear the Cappie's name. Does it deserve a chance to have a great restaurant in that location? Sure. But the name needs changing. The concept needs to be completely overhauled. And apologies need to be made to the public. What a great find! Drove to Amsterdam with Hubbie for some shopping and since we are not comfortable yet with indoor dining we decided to give this cute little place a try. Clean picnic tables under shady trees was very inviting. Our server was so warm and friendly. Provided us with menus and full service even though she was running back and forth from the restaurant to the outdoor area. We both chose burgers off the impressively varied menu. Mine was Ale & Onion with a yummy mustard sauce. I also had the mac salad that was recommended by the server. It was definitely as good as she said. Hubbie had a deluxe burger with peppered bacon and a bacon aioli. Both were on lovely brioche buns. Everything was so good including the chocolate malt shake that we shared. The fries are good, the chips are good, the burgers are ok. The chicken burger is a (I think) just a regular old frozen, breaded patty cooked on the grill. Dinner baskets are $8-$10ea (-ish). Three dinners, drinks, deserts, and a milkshake was about $60. The servers are great! The piece de resistance of the whole place is their ice cream, though!!! They serve flights of ice cream! Banana ice cream is FABULOUS and unusually delicious on top of a scoop of coffee ice cream! CAPPIES homemade ice cream ROCKS! Also a very good selection of food and prices are normal (as normal as can be these days anyways). Nice atmosphere, very clean in and outside. Cappie's became one of my favorite places this past summer! The Steak Salad with blue cheese crumbles is the best I've ever had. Their burgers and boneless wings are top-notch also. I must've ordered a quart of half vanilla/half pistachio ice cream at least a dozen times (BEWARE: it's homemade and addictive). One time I requested they align the layers vertically instead of horizontally, which I assumed would've been a pain, but the remaining times I ordered it they remembered this and did it without me asking!! Mom ordered a cherry Coke that they added cherry syrup to coke just like the good ole days! This is a great summer spot. It's got an old school look to it inside with the classic circle bar stools and little booths. The ice cream is awesome and the food is decent as well.
