We visited VILLAGES OF HILLSBORO PARK for the first time because my kids had a jiu-jitsu picnic…read moreparty event there. We arrived early, and although the parking lot is pretty large, it filled up quickly because of the event. I'm sure on regular days parking is much easier to find. Right at the entrance there's a drinking fountain, which was nice on such a hot Florida day. The park has two playgrounds -- one for younger kids and another for older children. There's also a covered pavilion area where the restroom is located. The restroom itself looked quite old and unfortunately wasn't very clean. Also, the park closes fairly early (7 AM-7 PM), and they actually lock the restroom at closing time. Huge thanks to the park ranger though -- my kids needed the restroom at the very last minute, and we literally ran to make it before the door closed. The ranger saw us coming and kindly waited for us. Very appreciated! One thing I really liked about this park is the amount of shade. There are huge trees all around the playground, so even during the heat it feels cooler and breezy. We were also surprised to find a small gazebo with a roof fully covered in solar panels -- it even had lights in the evening and a spot to charge your phone, which was such a cool detail. There aren't many benches around the playground, so my little life hack: bring a folding chair or a picnic blanket. And definitely bring mosquito spray for the evening. The playground surface looks like rubber, but somehow my kids still ended up super dusty and dirty after playing. An ice cream truck came by during the event, and the entire playground rushed toward it immediately -- of course we did too The ice cream was actually really good. I got the orange & cream flavor, and my kids chose mango. Around the playground there are walking trails and a lake with a small bridge nearby. Just something to note: the bridge doesn't have side rails, so keep an eye on little kids. Overall, it's a nice park with great shade, lots of breeze, and a relaxing atmosphere.

This small neighborhood park is just a bit over one acre in size. It's right behind one of my…read moredoctor's offices and next to the Imperial Point hospital. Although small in size, it's got a lot to offer. It is totally enclosed by a fence. There are shaded benches under large, gorgeous trees. And children's playgrounds -- including one under a tarp so it is covered from the sun. Swings. A basketball hoop to practice; facilities including a water fountain. In addition, there's a path around the outside -- a "health trail". This is like a parcour with different physical level exercises at each stop. Signs explain that there's no alcohol allowed and no pets except on leashes. Also, no smoking. I loved seeing a favorite -- the small free lending library box near one of the fences. It had a nice mix of adult novels and children's books in a colorful little structure. This is a great place for a respite from visiting a loved one at the hospital, a nice lunch break area, or just a fun place to bring the kids to play.

Fern Glen is a very pretty neighborhood park. The thing that sets this park is it has a lot of lovely large trees providing shade. It is also a certified wildlife habitat. At this park you can play half court basketball, bocce ball, or volleyball. There is a pretty basic playground with swings along with a jogging trail that runs around the perimeter of the park. There is an exercise area set up with fitness stations. Other park amenities include a bathroom, picnic pavilion, and a grill. There is ample parking in the lot.

They also have a dog park, basketball court, tennis courts, fitness area, fishing, handball etc. Plenty of parking. I love that it's right by the water and there's a bit of shade as you're trying to get your daily steps in. I finally stopped coming because some people were not watching their dogs as closely as they should. The worst incident I saw happened when a bike rider was going past the fence. A dog pulled off the leash a man was holding and leaped up and ripped her arm open. After that I was done. The problems of the past seem to be over with the new renovation of the dog park. You must register your pet now in order to use it. Registration is $35 for Coconut Creek residents and $70 for non residents. There are separate parks for large and small dogs. The city has added wash stations and agility equipment for the dogs. The park is lovely since it borders a lake and there are over 60 trees providing shade. Water fountains, benches, and a wash station were also added. Keeping your pet safe is a security fence surrounding the entire dog park. Right now only around 150 dog owners have signed up so the park is never crowded. The park is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance. The iconic windmill of the park has now been moved to the inside of the dog park and a lot of landscaping was added. The renovation of the dog park was part of a 3 million dollar Windmill park renovation. Parking used to be dicey but not anymore as the parking lot has been expanded to twice it's size. A new playground has been also added for human kids. Furry kids can be registered at the Community Center up the street on Lyons Road. Once you pay you are given a FOB to enter the dog park fence.

Fairview Park has a parking lot and restrooms which you don't usually find in a neighborhood park. There is also a picnic area, basketball court, open lawn area for play, and a playground with a tot section and one for older children. Fairview Park can be rented for private events. Winding through the park is a paved walkway for exercise and walking your dog. I was impressed with the many trees are in the park adding beauty, shade and a home for native and migrating birds. As I was walking around people were setting up a tent to sell food providing a real sense of community. Parks like this one are an important recreational resource for their neighborhoods.

It's in a residential area that I didn't know even existed. And it's a nice bit of open greenery for the residents in contrast to the industrial buildings on Dixie. There's a small playground for kids that looks new -- or newly painted. There is a basketball court, walking path, and restroom facilities. Under a stand of trees is one picnic bench and a bbq grill. The large green lawn area is perfect for soccer, frisbee, or possibly a concert. There's a parking lot for cars or for just hanging out with your friends -- as we observed when we stopped by.

Gwendolyn Maitland, the 14th Countess of Lauderdale, divided her time between her castle near Edinburgh and Palm Beach. While in Palm Beach she discovered Ft. Lauderdale named after her distant ancestor, Major William Lauderdale, during the Second Seminole War. In 1923 Maitland helped form the American British Improvement Association which purchased 8,000 acres of land north of Fort Lauderdale including a mile of oceanfront property. She planned to create a luxury resort in Broward County with the help of investor John S. Pillsbury, co-founder of the Pillsbury food company. The name Floranada was chosen from a mash up of Florida and Canada but the American British Improvement Association went bankrupt in 1926 before the resort could be built. This neighborhood in Ft. Lauderdale still bears the name. Floranada Park is almost 10 acres of outdoor recreational fun. Amenities include an athletic field, open area for play, pavilion, picnic tables, and grill, playground, restrooms, and sand volleyball court. Since the park is next to a school it is open daily after school until 9 PM and all day on the weekends. During the weekdays this park is mainly an extension of the school. During the weekends you will find families picnicking, kids unleashing their energy, and friends playing volleyball. This park adds to the vibrancy of the Floranada community.
