Capo By The Sea Review - A Life-Changing Experience I can honestly say that Capo By The Sea in Capistrano Beach, CA, has been nothing short of transformative for me. From the moment I arrived, I felt embraced by the warmth and dedication of the entire team, who are all genuinely invested in your recovery. The setting itself is incredible--beautiful, sunny Southern California with the soothing presence of the beach nearby. The living quarters and homes are gorgeous and comfortable, creating an atmosphere that feels like a safe, healing sanctuary. The structure of the program provides a perfect balance of freedom and accountability, allowing you to feel supported while still having the autonomy to grow and heal. Nicki, the program director, is an absolute gem! She leads with compassion, professionalism, and a deep understanding of the recovery process. The clinical team--Kim Glossbrenner, Jack Platt, Dr. Robin Fraser, and Terry Kellerman--are top-notch, providing personalized and thoughtful care to address the mental and emotional aspects of addiction recovery. They are also encouraging & willing to work with family members and loved ones in person or via Zoom, which is incredibly helpful in establishing a solid foundation for your continued recovery after returning home. The support staff, (in no particular order) including Cat, Randy, Manny, Jack, Coral, Ryan, Lucas, Destiny, Alyssa, Chris, Brent, Tim, Chelsea, and Tony, are always there with a smile, despite having to manage our countless & incredible needs! This helps to create a positive, loving & encouraging environment. They truly make Capo feel like a second home. One of the standout features of the program is its holistic approach. From acupuncture with Vida, meditation with Ingrid, breath-work with Matthew, Jeremy & Eric, yoga & sound baths with Ashly, and hiking in the stunning local landscape, Capo By The Sea offers a wide variety of therapeutic activities. The gym access is also great for physical health, and the massage therapy is a perfect way to relax and reset. In addition to these tools, the program offers a very solid AA/NA program which is imperative in your initial recovery & your hopeful continued success in sobriety. The opportunities to grow as a happy & healthy human being and improve your life are limitless, if you truly want it. The food is also a major highlight. Executive chef Pablo prepares meals that are not only delicious but nourishing--he truly goes above and beyond to ensure that each meal supports both body and soul. John K. and Patty B., the owner & intake coordinator, respectively, have created something truly special here. Their passion for helping others is evident in every aspect of Capo By The Sea, and I am forever grateful for the miracles they are working. Having been here twice, I can confidently say that Capo By The Sea has changed my life in profound ways. It's a place that feels like home, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a supportive, comprehensive, and life-changing recovery experience.

This might not be Laguna but it's awesome and mellow and the surf is fierce! You can bring your bougie beach chairs and sit and watch the crazy waves and all the dogs walking by.The surfers seem to like it!!

I checked into Capo and what an amazing experience, the staff are amazing to include, Destiny, Ryan, Alyssa, Cat, Manny, Cassie, Kim, Ingrid, Nicole, Terrence, Jake, Patty, and I can't forget Chef Pablo. Actually everyone was just amazing. The owner John was very present and attended every morning group meeting with us at the Park. I could not have went to a better rehabilitation for alcoholism. I also found life long friends when I was at Capo, I am at day 26 sober and thanks to Capo I will continue on my journey with pride. I loved the group meetings to include starting the day at the park overlooking the ocean. I was able to bring my best friend Molly "picture attached" with me and that meant the world to me having her with me every step of the way. Thank you everyone at Capo by the sea.

My arm is terribly burnt after taking my vitals.

Update from patient who was scammed by Capo by the Sea. After repeatedly requesting our medical records from Capo by the Sea they finally sent them to us almost a full two weeks later. Our meds would run out long before the two weeks that it took them to send us our paper work, but they know this. They intentionally held back our records making it impossible to get after care that they did not provide for us. I still have a huge scar on my arm where one of the employees took my blood pressure below my arm. One month later and my scar is huge and looks like it is permanent. CAPO BY THE SEA had used many of patients for profit. Please read my earlier review!'

Monticetito house I was admitted to
    Brennan S.

I was moved from one of the main houses at midnight when I was supposed to attend a meeting at 7:30 the next am. I was told I had 2 hours to pack after rolling me. I was given no warning and hadn't even done anything to get into trouble. I spent over a hour going through readmission because John owns all 3 houses houses/rehabs but San Juan is a different house (bad, disgusting, unsanitary) and has is own computer system.. I was never told I would go to the San Juan house.. I had been staying in the Monticetito house, photo attached. A beautiful mansion, in a gated community to a lesser quality house that had mold on the ceilings, photos attached. The owner, John flew me there but would not fly me home, which is entrapment. This caused a disruption in my sleep health that I had been working hard on to improve and overall recovery health. I had been living with the same people in the Monticetito house for a few weeks then they expected me to bond with new people for my last couple weeks there. There were early am meetings in a park above the beach, we sat in a circle in folding chairs in the grass! This was not how the morning aa meetings were described to me over the phone. The owner, John ran them and they were at 7:30 every morning except Sunday and it was always cold and wet. We were all in lawn chairs. This was supposed to be a luxury Rehab. The house I was moved to didn't even attend all the same meetings as Capo House and Monticetito House. After I had spent so much time bonding with those people I lived with in the Monticetito house, being moved to a lesser quality house with people I didn't know as well was very hurtful. Especially because I had insurance paying thousands of dollars a day! This other house, that I was moved to with mold on the ceilings, isn't even on their website. I am deeply disappointed in how this facility is run. I have screenshots of exactly how the website looked during the time I was there with snapshots and time stamps. As well as photos of the homes. Prior to that situation, John was notified that the hot water stopped working at the Monticetito house. He said he wanted to fix it himself, Instead of calling a repair service, which is illegal and unethical considering we didn't have water until late that night. And it was fixed by a tech that worked there. John never even stopped by to fix it. Two different clients tried to fix the water heater but were unsuccessful. Why should a client have to resort to doing John's job? He is the "owner". It came out later that John had been sued in the past because he forced all opiate addicts to have a narcan implant in their bodies, it was mandated by John, until he was arrested and served jail time. I flew across the country, from Ohio to California to attend this rehab and to work on my ptsd. I never even got to do EMDR! Which I was promised. I have deeply effected by John's treatment of women at the facility. He charged women more money than men, never invited me to golf, only men. Also, he never invited me to church, which is illegal. You can't deny someone to attend church. Each staff member privately spoke to me and are aware of John's issues. They all had something bad to say about him and he is dangerous. John picked up one of the clients at night, told him he had a package for him. The client went outside, John told him to get into his car and John drove 100mph down the road. All staff is concerned about John and the facility but are afraid to speak up because they can't lose their jobs. I Was told there was a pool- No pool. Here is the website I was given. https://montecitorehab.com/ Oh, and the food was horrific. Pasta almost every night. John complained to the patients that he spent $1,000 on food a week. That was for 15-20 people and that's all he would spend? There were many days there was nothing to eat at all, so I would have to use my own money and go grocery shopping. Complete scam, sad. Also, a client suffered a medical emergency while I was there and staff was no help. I keep telling her to call 911 But she kept just staring at me. Thankfully another client and her husband were there and they called 911 and gave the address. I told Rachel, the clinical director that the staff needed to be updated on what to do in an emergency Bc ever second counts in an emergency situation. The faster the patient is treated, the better the chance the patient will survive. I was moved after that. Maybe that was my punishment. Who knows, all I know is I want all my money back.

Not awful, but definitely bad. Wish I got pics of the inside because it is absolutely horrible.

I will say this, so far, it's going extremely well. The staff at my house is helpful and caring. They really go out of their way to make the people here feel comfortable & that in itself is truly appreciated, Esp bc I had serious fear and doubt about coming here at all. I've been pleasantly surprised at the level of care by the house staff. In particular.. April, Ivan, Tammy & Sutter have been a huge source of help in my treatment. I can talk to them about anything ( & I have had multiple meltdowns) & always receive a supporting conversation leaving me feeling very positive about the experience regardless of how uncomfortable I may be, feeling my feelings. Theo whom is my case manager is exceptional at his job. He is kind and very resourceful in all the aspects I ask of him. Like helping me with SDI, Doctor appointments and special requests- great listener and easy to talk to which is highly appreciated Brian my therapist is incredible at what he does. He is so well balanced calm and smart! I'm learning great EDMR & DBT Skills which have been a life saving tool in this process. Not using cannabis as a crutch was very difficult at first, I've used this for anxiety for a decade - Brian has truly helped me regulate my intense emotions through great breath work and other tools , Like EDMR Therapy . The counselors are lovely friendly and attentive , I truly have no complaints , I'm extremely committed to my healing so knowing these professionals care is very nice. I can really only speak from the mental health program which has been fantastic for me.. I put in a request to extend my stay because of the positive impact this is having for me. I attribute that to the people who work here completely. This review is from my personal experience. It has been a breath of fresh air for me. If you are struggling I would recommend trying this .

She provides an incredible amount of support and has a wealth of knowledge that she shares in a way that's easy to understand. I'm so grateful for her encouragement and the genuine warmth she brings to the clinic. Ariel is another standout professional on the team. He is great at making sure you stay on the right path, and he's never afraid to adjust treatments on the fly when something isn't feeling quite right. He's an excellent listener who validates your concerns and ensures that every minute of your care is tailored to what your body needs that day. They prayed on a weak person that needs help and doesn't understand protected leave options. They told my family member they would apply for FMLA, and STD once in their care and if they don't qualify they'll apply for a leave of absence. Completely false and they don't understand leave laws. They had no clue that my family member had already exhausted FMLA and STD with their current employer within the past 12 months and they can't automatically say my family member will get a leave of absence, that's at the discretion of my family members employer if they're not eligible for protected leave. The facility also didn't understand that if my family member isn't working and they go on leave, they have to go on COBRA which my family member can't afford and the family isn't paying, which means they make no money, will have to fly my family member home. They just wasted everyone's time, energy, money, resources and more importantly, the hope my family member had because of their failure to do their due diligence prior to arrival with benefit approval and job protection from the addicts current employer! Seriously, you're telling me this place is going to fly a patient across the county and then fill out paperwork to find out they won't get a dime? Sounds like a scam and extremely misinformed business practice. The second I explained the situation they quickly canceled my family members admission, which is ultimately what we wanted. This practice seems very misguided and uninformed. Be careful. They don't understand protected leave and it should be fully vetted and approved with your FMLA/STD administrator before you enter this faciltiy or any facility to avoid undue hardship for an already struggling addict and family memebers. I was told they can't start that process until the patient is in their care which I've never heard. You get approval for leave first and applicable benefits, then you go to treatment. Be careful. This place is fishy and something isn't right.
