I used to frequent this place as a little girl... 50 plus years ago... my Dad used to take me... he's now 84... and I'm 57... and I'm visiting home and we went back for a nostalgic taste of our favorite hotdogs and meat sauce. I just drove 2 hours from Boston to Capitol Lunch with my daughter and wife today. I learned of it when my Dad took me when I was a kid. He learned of it when his Dad took him back in the 50's. This was the place my grandfather went to post WW2 as a Staff Sergeant in the 10th Mountain Div, and after working a shift at Stanley Works. If you want to be a big spender you can get a freshly made quarter pound burger for $5.39. Hot Dogs are king here, and its been that way for 90 years. My hot dog was fantastic, a good sized hot dog with ketchup, onions, and their famous chili-like meat sauce on a pillowy soft fresh as can be roll. For $2.99 it was fantastic. A wonderful Yelp CT evening out at the Capital Lunch (the hotdog with our famous "CAPPY"sauce. Also a special touch of the grape kool-aid that was offered that I haven't had since I was kid. This place that so many people have been and has been around since 1929. The meat sauce is so yummy and a perfect touch which I had on both my hotdog and my hamburger along with the nacho cheese sauce. Spent the better part of 50+years getting Hotdogs from here and always KISS keeping it so simple. Service is always top notch as always they move quick so you need to have a game plan before your at the counter. For me it's always a HotDog with mustard, ketchup, and of course the secret sauce. Let me start by saying, this spot is truly a staple in the New Britain community. Folks love coming here for the exact thing that I still have an issue with years later but they love it. An acquired taste? Possibly but let us start with the other options that I went with first. Like their smashed grilled cheese and I call it smashed for it reminded me much of just that. Imagine a grilled cheese pressed down, far as possible and that is never an issue. Actually, I did prefer the crispiness here and the cheese was just ok. A decent butter blend, well suited for its position here and it was of a nice size. I am probably more into the cheesy gooey grilled cheese activity and this particular version did not give me that, just a bare bones run of the mill grilled cheese that you would make at home, if at all. You can order chili by the pint here but that will come frozen for you to heat up later at home and so I went to try their chili dog, just to get at their chili in hopes of some subtle changes but just like years ago, it fell short of what I have known chili to. be...again, this version comes with an acquired taste that I have yet to acquire, even living here for a few years. The Chili does not have a spicy roundhouse kick at all. It actually goes in for the kick, misses and falls FLAT upon its own face. You will however get this lightly oily film and some grit. The mouth. feel on this chili does not boast anything hearty but someone playing a cruel and unusual joke upon your tastebuds. All of this onto of a hot dog that has great snap and good flavor. Toss in that soft bun of fun and yes, the hotdog itself is good but that Chili just does not do it for me. The restaurant is clean and again, you will always see a nice flow of customers. It is exactly perfect that way - and the sauce - well, that is the magic. it isn't really chili, but it is like a dryer, smoother chili that takes its heat from more cumin, garlic and soy than the chili powder inside. With the mustard and diced onions, it is plain perfect. In the combo, the crisp fries (or onion rings) and a fountain drink bring the whole thing together. Thank god it is a drive for me or I'd be there too much. The place is no frills so don't expect cloth napkins or corkage. I went to Capitol Lunch for the first time last week and was not dissapointed! Here's the scoop on this New Britain staple... The restaurant is located right on Main St., so there's on-street parking in front of the building, as well as on a nearby side street. The inside is nothing special. It's pretty large with a good amount of tables to sit at, as well as counter seating on either side of the front entrance, so you can look out the windows and out onto the sidewalk/street. I went on a weekday during the lunch rush, and although it was a little crowded, the service was fast and staff were friendly. You just go up to the counter and place your order, then they call you when it's ready (there's no waitstaff service). I ordered two of the "Famous Hot Dogs" which come topped with yellow mustard, chopped onion, and their special sauce (which I was told is ground beef cooked with some spices, though it is not spicy). They were really good! I ordered a side of fries that were hot and crispy and a Pepsi to drink. The prices were very reasonable at $2.99 for the "Famous Hot Dog" and $2.49 for a regular one. I got the "Famous Combo" which included the two Famous hot dogs, fries (or onion rings), and a fountain soda for $9.99. It seems like they do a lot of to-go orders as well. As they were preparing my order, I saw them boxing up about 12 Famous hot dogs for someone else. Overall a delicious hot dog for a reasonable price. Whenever I come back to New Britain, I always stop in here. They don't do designer hot dogs. They don't do fancy creations or have special menus (unless they do, it's been too long). What they *do* do is slather a dog or three with yellow mustard, diced onions, and "the sauce", and it winds up being one of the best hot dogs you'll ever eat. Live far away like I do?
