Wishing I did not have to write this review, but I do want to share my honest experience of our recent visit to Capital Vet Specialists. I called the clinic at 1:30am after we found our sweet girl so sick. It is a 24/7 ER and the first one that picked up their lines. They were upfront on costs from the start letting us know they it is 188 for the vet to evaluate here. We rushed to the hospital and as soon as we arrived they jumped into action. The nurse came charging out and carried my baby girl back. They immediately started doing what they could to help. Throughout the 18 hours my girl was in their care they exhibited clear, honest, and transparent communication. From the start, the gave us an estimate on what we could expect cost wise. I appreciated how they gave us the highest range, so we could get the worry of cost out of the way. They do this so that they don't need to keep calling asking if they can do x,y,z. Anything they don't need, they refund to you. When health tragedy is at hand, no one wants to be worried about cost and I think they have a great system for maintaining a clear process on payments. I want to give special thank you to the night Vet Dr. Izeman or Eisman ( i dont know the proper spelling). He showed us great empathy and compassion and treated my girl with the utmost care. I am heartbroken to share that we lost my bestfriend, but I do want to acknowledge that Dr. Izeman and his nurses gave us the the space we needed and helped us each step of the way. Although I hope you never need to, I would certainly recommend brining your fur babies here for any overnight emergency. read more

On Monday 8/25 2am I brought in my cat, Niles, who I've had since I was 10 years old. He was having a multitude of health issues, and stopped being able to walk and was struggling to breathe. This was easily the worst night of my life. The staff on duty this night were beyond my expectations, the doctor gave me so much reassurance in saying my baby passed in my arms at arrival and not scared on the hospital bed. She let me sit in a room with him and say goodbye, and had the receptionist go over our options for cremation. They handled the situation with so much care and I couldn't have been more appreciative. On Monday 8/25 8:30pm I called and asked if they were able to save one of his whiskers for me. The woman on the phone advised me she could not locate my cat in the system and thought I had the wrong place, because the only pet coming up was my dog who I brought in 2024. I also would like to add I spelled my cat's name multiple times, emphasizing "N as in Nancy" for Niles. I gave her my information 3x, and she was able to locate Niles information, and told me that she would merge the accounts and it wouldn't be an issue again. She also informed me he was taken to Pet Angels Memorial Services overnight. I also want to add she was very empathetic and kind. On Wednesday 8/27 1:36pm I called for a status update on his remains, because of the account confusion I was very anxious they wouldn't be able to pull up my account again. The woman I spoke to was not as helpful as the prior in fact she was dismissive, asked me if they called, I advised not yet, she told me to wait for a call and if they didn't reach me they'd leave a voicemail. She told me the dates of upcoming shipments. On Friday 8/29 3:50 I called, again for a status update, and got the same woman on the line from Wednesday. She was dismissive, I told her I was anxious about it and even apologized for being persistent, and she did not look up the account just told me to wait for a call. On Tuesday 9/2 9:08pm I called later intentionally to speak with anyone other than her, no answer. On Wednesday 9/3 8:35pm I called and got Sarah, the kindest person I've spoken with over the phone yet. She looked up the account and the same issue happened, she could only see the account for my dog. It took multiple attempts for her to find my cat's information. She told me they had his remains and she was so empathetic and understanding of why I was so anxious as it's now been well over a week since I dropped him off and can't seem to get an ETA. On Wednesday 9/3 10pm I get to the office to pick up his remains, paw print, and fur. Pet Angels Memorial put together a very sweet package. I asked her when the remains were dropped off, and she advised me it was Wednesday 8/27. I received no call or voicemail as promised, and was repeatedly dismissed. Sarah was so apologetic and listened to my experience, took down the times I called, and assured me the owner Christy would be in touch with me about my experience. On Saturday 9/6 9pm I go to my mailbox and receive the kindest letter imaginable. However, after all this, his name was spelled wrong. It has Miles written all over it. The staff who wrote it are so kind and sweet, I think it was just extra salt in the wound after all the rest. It's now Sunday 9/7. I never did hear back from management. I'm actually extremely disappointed and frustrated that management didn't take 10 minutes out of their day to acknowledge my experience. I think it's unprofessional and unacceptable. I'm trying to be as unbiased as possible in this review, but if I'm honest, the person who dismissed me multiple times instead of looking up my account resulting in my childhood cat's remains being left unclaimed for an entire week needs to be held accountable. A week unclaimed when I desperately needed them has left me angry, hurt, and disgusted. Thank God I kept calling and being persistent because who knows when remains are discarded after being unclaimed prolonged periods of time. Shame on this person, and shame on management for not contacting me. Pros: Select staff are angels. Sarah, Eva, and Dr. Hanna were notably amazing. Cons: Grief process was made much worse than it already is. Empty promises. Awful damage control from management. Overall I really would not wish this experience on anyone and would turn them in literally any other direction. read more

They are the best. Joey was hit by a car and they treated him as if he was their only patient and very friendly and respectful to me. The cost was reasonable for emergency services For hospital part. He had broken his femur and had to have an operation to put two pins in it to help mend it. I feel like this cost was also very reasonable. Both time they broke the cost down for me so I was able to make the decision to stay here or go some where else. Hands up the price was good especially for the service They gave. I don't feel comfortable with how things were handled during my visits. At times it seemed like pets were handled a little rough, which made me uneasy. Some of the staff didn't inspire confidence -- it honestly felt like they weren't fully trained for the level of care they should be providing. This is a great emergency vet clinic with friendly and caring employees. We had to transfer our male cat to them after it was discovered he had a urinary blockage. The wait time was not bad and they got him in with urgency. The employees called me frequently with updates and I felt secure and happy with leaving my cat in their care. The vet bill is always higher than we want but surprisingly I felt the prices were fair and as expected. I hope to not have to bring any of my other pets to the ER again but if I do I would choose to come back here. My cat is doing well and fully recovered from his urinary issues. read more

They gave my dog double the amount of anesthesia he was required for a surgery, it caused him seizures and when we came back regarding the seizures, they told us they can't do anything and that we can either euthanize him or take him to a neurologist. Tracy is great there and was the most helpful, sending me pics of my baby and playing music for him, the music i played for him every night. Unfortunately, mistakes happen. But the fact this place has more 1 star reviews than 5, says enough. I have a friend who also lost their dog under the care of capital vet. Very unfortunate, don't recommend. Tracy helped give my dog his best last days, but i do not trust any of the other staff, especially not those who do or participate in the surgeries there. read more

Dr. kept us informed all night long with different options and treatments. We were able to go over a variety of different estimates. It seemed as if they really cared for her as their own. I couldn't possibly recommend a place less than this. Honestly, this is the slimiest, most worthless group of people I've ever had the 'pleasure' of coming in contact with. I took my Bulldog Butters here to understand why he was having a seizure like event (turned out to be syncopes) in his sleep, but only during deep sleep, then losing control of his bladder. Let's get right to business, this place runs a massive imaging scam. They will tell you they think that your pet has a tumor on their heart, do untold thousands worth of scans, let you worry all weekend, and then when you take him back in they tell you "He doesn't have a tumor, he has severe sleep apnea and he's losing oxygen due to it, we can operate tomorrow." Already out multiple thousands of dollars due to this scam, I obviously agree to pay $3200 for this surgery (that usually runs MAXIMUM $1000) to make sure my best buddy is feeling okay. They've run tests, his red blood cell count is down but assure me in a day or two he can have his surgery. I drop Butters off for surgery, pay them $3200, and am worried sick. At noon, they call and tell me he made it through surgery, everything is fine. I'm ecstatic, can finally rest and pick him up the next day. At 3:30, I get a call that my best bud is no longer with us, and that the "surgeon" wanted to put him back under because his breathing got heavier to "Trim some swelling off". Now I'm not a doctor, but I know bullshit when I smell it. They did not have permission to put him back under, and my buddy died so the dr could go home. Furious, I come up to the vet, and see my boy lying dead on a rolling cart, and they bring me a receipt for the bill, tell me it will be $350 to cremate him, and $50 if I want his paw print. AFTER THEY KILLED HIM. I tried to talk to the surgeon, who ducked me at all costs. I ended up speaking to their anesthesiologist, who barely spoke English, and had conflicting stories from the surgeon, and I caught both of them in several lies. They never checked butters red blood cell count, and did not properly treat him post surgery (IE Mandatory oxygen tent and intubated until they can't stand it anymore, I learned he was only intubated for several minutes after and thrown in a cage, then given a downer to calm his breathing, prior to dosing him to put him back under which ultimately stopped his heart). I had Oklahoma State University and Texas A&M BOTH review Butters case over the past year and they said its the most absurd case of vet negligence that they've ever seen and I should reach out via lawyers. Obviously because they killed my friend I disputed the transaction for the surgery where they killed him on my card, which this place then disputed??? They told me the surgeon was no longer with them, and I should sue him if I felt so inclined. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE YOUR PET HERE. read more

I've read good and bad reviews about this place!! But I loved it, my dog was a regular for over 3 weeks!! I mean prices are insane but my vet was actually more money! The workers were super nice!! My poor Blue was attacked by 2 dogs and had to get stitches in her paw, within 24 hours it was infected. Now from my first to 2nd visit I feel like whoever took care of her the first time felt like they could of done better( my opinion). But I'm super pleased about how everything went in her recovery there. The person who answered the phone was polite, but they would not help my dog at 11:30pm. I explained my dog was bleeding quite a bit through her rectum, throwing up, and extremely fatigued. The person said they maxed out in appointments for the rest of the night. Why doesn't a 24 hour emergency vet hospital have enough staff and facilities to treat very ill animals? What if emergency rooms refused to except very ill humans? In all fairness, I called two other 24 hr emergency vets; one was also full and the other never answered the phone. read more

Regrettably, my recent encounter with this pet surgeon's office was disheartening. The front desk staff displayed a lack of warmth and empathy, which made an already stressful situation more difficult. I called three time to ask about pre-surgical bloodwork for our pup to be sure she could handle the surgery and was finally told (on the third call) they take blood just before the surgery. Not leaving much time to determine if the pet can handle the surgery. Surgery went well, and we took our baby home. Three weeks to the day of her surgery, we had to put her down at our usual vet's office because we found out she was riddled with cancer (stomach and liver). I called Capital Vet to make them aware our pup would not be coming in for subsequent post-surgical checks and to ask for a copy of her pre-surgical blood work. All they did was a Chem 8. Not even a CBC (complete blood count) which would have surely should elevate white blood cell count indicating an issue. They happily took our $4,000 and were done with us. Not one call back from anyone on staff. We are deeply disappointed by the center's inability to acknowledge the loss of our beloved pup. Their insensitivity during such a vulnerable moment was truly upsetting. I hope this establishment takes steps to improve both their customer service and their approach to supporting grieving pet owners. read more

A neighbor reported it and gave him to "Savannah," a vet tech she knew who took our dog almost 20 miles away to her own clinic (Capital Vet) and held our dog hostage and wouldn't allow us to take him home, citing he was dehydrated (they did NOT give him IV fluids) and horribly shaved him down. The manager, Catherine, said our dog had been taken to Animal Care/Control (not true) and if we didn't leave the property we could be arrested for trespassing. We spoke with JPD and were told we would be able to pick him up the next morning but, when we arrived, we found out they had let Savannah (the VT) take our dog home with her overnight! We called police again and finally ACC helped us get him back with a "hand off" from Savannah...8 hours later!! Horrible situation...I've never experienced anything like it. BEWARE!!! read more

Dr. Darrow did a splenectomy on my 12 1/2 year Golden a few weeks ago. Our experience was A+ ... The staff was kind and responsive to my calls. Dr. Darrow called to discuss the surgery in depth and called again to explain the biopsy results. Dr. Darrow exhibited professionalism and went over and above on Teddy's treatment. We were concerned about the tumor on Teddy's spleen. When Dr. Darrow performed the operation he not only removed the spleen but he took a sample of Teddy's liver to be sent out for biopsy as well. And ... he did a gastropexy (tacked Teddy's stomach to wall to prevent bloat). I really appreciated his initiative. And, the best news ever, both the spleen and liver were free of cancer read more

I was referred here from my vet because Capital has both internal medical and surgical. If you're not having an emergency I strongly recommend you bite the bullet and go to UF. I've taken my dog here multiple times to try and diagnose an issue with no luck. The vets are great but they don't communicate with each other so there is no benefit to having both internal and surgical in the same office if you don't know what you're trying to treat. The real problem is the front desk. You make an appointment but you're not allowed inside to check in. So you call and wait in your car with your pet 30+ minutes after your appointment before they even see you. Sometimes you're allowed in with your pet, other times not. The nurse checking you in clearly doesn't communicate with the vet because they're asking you questions you've told the vet multiple times already. And then when you go to get your pet it's another 30-60 minute wait because only your nurse can check out your pet. Even though there is clearly a record of treatment (quoted and signed off on) and you talked to the vet in length already. VERY flawed system. read more

Two years ago I had brought in my dog Coco not knowing what to expect. My dog was in a very bad shape she got hit by hit and run and we don't know how long has she been on the side of the road until someone has came to my house and told us what happened to her. When we brought her to the hospital they had given her a 50-50 chance, and not knowing what tomorrow would bring. We had asked the Doctors to do the best they could to save her. My family and I are very thankful for all the staff and the doctors who saved her, they had helped us financially and helped us go through the process in caring for her. They had saved my Baby, and now she is just as happy and running around, after they told us she can never walk again. Based on 'Murphy's Law' alone, having a Veterinarian Hospital open past the hours of 5 pm & all weekend IS imperative as a pet owner. Then seen by the Vet Tech first, followed by examined by The Vet on duty, then both the Vet & Vet tech Came in the room I had been waiting in & brought my baby back to me.They spent a good 15+ mins with me. Very caring! They made me feel 100% better then when Hattie Cat & I arrived. exam+ Pill administered+departing w/fur baby in tow @ Approx 9:45 pm = $165. One Con=they don't have a pharmacy. SO the RX they wrote,can be filled online @ 'Chewy' or something alike. UPON my doing so,it did take Capital a small light year to approve it/communicate wit Chewy. Therefore, it took 2 wks to get my Cats RX shipped to me. OVERALL=I recommend Capital ER Vet! Horrible service, and unqualified doctors. I took my dog to the vet Saturday morning and they said she needed emergency surgery and referred me to Capital Veterinary Specialists. When I got there of course they made me pay for yet another ultrasound even though the previous vet had done one. They came back saying the issue was not emergent and the surgery did not have to be done that day, to look within the week. I got my dog home and she turned from bad to worse and was horrible on Sunday. I took her back to the first vet Monday morning and they did the surgery immediately and said that it was bad and she had a small rupture that turns deadly. I feel that Capital Veterinary Specialists should refund my money spent on the over priced ultrasound they did when they already had one to go by. But they won't because they are a bunch of under qualified money hungry people. In response to Capital Veterinary specialist: You guys like to leave information out...First if all she was well hydrated because I had force fed her water through a syringe, which I TOLD your nurse. The FACTS: At 3:11pm, the vet (Mallory Nebel) called and told us that he had a respiratory infection and we could come get him. We arrived close to 4:30pm and had to wait in the lobby for nearly 2 hours. When we got into the room, Mallory Nebel asks us if we've ever seen any "bruising" on Loomis. Which we have never seen. Then goes on to tell us that, she had to "part his fur" and "shaved fur off the front paw" to really see it. She just wanted to "prepare us for that when we saw him". She goes on to say that she was concerned about his ability to clot. She said, "leave the bandages on for a few hours and watch for bleeding when you take them off". She offered up a blood test to test his liver function, which we agreed to and waiting another 20 minutes to be told that is was all good. She told us that if he continues to bleed from where the IV's were stuck in that we should consider having a clotting panel performed. Then in comes the discharging vet tech with Loomis...and a VERY different story. Whomever inserted the IV, very clearly noticed the blood in his legs and tried to stick him again. But it was getting worse, so they stuck him in one of his back legs with the same result. SO THEY STUCK him in his OTHER back leg. 3 of 4 legs now are damaged due to their negligence. When we see him, our jaws dropped. This was certainly not barely discernable. His legs were swollen and purple! This begs the question... why did the vet lie to us about this? I've been told by the hospital administrator, Katherine, that they have performed their own "internal review" and surprise... they've deemed themselves not guilty of any wrong doing. But what is really the kicker, is the way they have apparently changed their records. Katherine, told me that "you declined the additional tests recommended". We did what ever tests they offered up and paid no questions asked in full faith they had our best interests in mind. So, after that conversation, I went back to the records we were given and sent to our regular vet. So, now I am wondering if they changed the records to fit their narrative. The records we have in the follow up section it says "Your vet: 1 week for chest radiographs." Is it just me or does something seem very sinister in all of this? We had Loomis at our regular vet at 8am the next day, then at First Coast Emergency Vet that afternoon. Loomis died of internal hemorrhaging. Capital Vet damaged 3 of 4 legs - they took away any chance that we may have had to identify and treat, basically sealing his doom. On a side note, they refused to offer me any refunds, so I am forced to escalate this legally. I will also be sharing my story on every public forum I can to save another pet. I have photos and original copies of records to back up my story. DO NOT take your pet to Capital Veterinary Specialists. They do not care about anything but lining their pockets and will lie and commit fraud to do so. read more

It has taken me almost 4 weeks to put together the words to describe how awful our experience at this "emergency vet" was. The lack of compassion, the lack of communication and the dishonesty that was portrayed by the individuals we interacted with was unfathomable. I brought my 12-year-old dog, Hurley, to be examined around 3:00am for repeated and prolonged seizure activity. Unfortunately, the only other 24/7 ER was in a surgery that was going to last at least 3 hours, so they referred us to Capital Vet. When we arrived, we were checked in by an employee that didn't seem to care to be there. We explained what was happening and there was absolutely no sense of urgency. Once we were finally taken to the back, we found it was very strange that none of the "exam" rooms even had an exam table. We soon found out that they take the animals to the back instead of performing any kind of exam while you are in the room. Very odd. We had the feeling that after having dozens of back-to-back continued seizures with no improvement of oral medications, the length of time it continued and his current state, we had the feeling this would be our last goodbyes. To our surprise, that was never even mentioned. They took him to the back to get him started on an IV and some medications. Shortly after, we started to hear a terrible screech and howling from the back. It went on for 30 minutes before someone else came into the room. Surely that didn't sound like Hurley. But much to our surprise, the vet confirmed it was. He explained that he was probably just really scared as he was going through the symptoms of getting on the medications. The physician and tech seemed to believe that Hurley would just stay overnight, get IV meds and be back home in a few hours. It was almost as if he didn't want us to say no, because the next thing we knew, they brought Hurley in, completely panicking, howling, screaming, chattering his teeth, crying and set him directly on the FLOOR in front of us. He said "this is what it would be like to take him home right now if he doesn't stay the night. He will stay and get the IV meds and go home." My sweet Hurley was in complete distress and it was horrific to watch. With the glimmer of hope & wanting to get him treated ASAP, we agreed to the very expensive night stay and we were under the impression that we were wrong about the whole situation and he would be fine. Before we left, we were reassured that Hurley was now resting quietly and not in distress as he was partially sedated and on the IV continuous infusion. After about 10 hours, we received word that Hurley was continuing to have seizures and they recommended euthanasia. How did we have so much hope and that wasn't even in the cards 10 hours before? It wasn't even mentioned or discussed. When we arrived back at the office to say our final goodbyes, we were put into another "exam room" as we waited on the vet. Again, no exam table. When he entered, he reviewed that Hurley was not improving at all and would recommend euthanasia. We expressed that one of us would not like to be in the room during the event. The vet stated he would have someone come in with the paperwork. We could hear the same sound of howling, screeching in pure agony as we sat there. We questioned the vet to see if that was Hurley. To which he replied "no, he was on the other side." We waited and waited for the paperwork to show up as we listened to the cries. 30 minutes later, Hurley shows up in our room on a lunch cart. The girl drops him off, says nothing, and leaves the room. Hurley was in COMPLETE distress. These were the same sounds of distress we had listened to for the past 30 minutes while we waited. Time started to stand still. I tried to comfort Hurley but he was completely panicked and short of breath. We yelled out into the back again for someone to come help. Another girl came back and we told her that he needed help and was suffering. A few more minutes later, she arrived with the paperwork to be signed and stated "Wow look at him barking at us" and starting laughing. I could not believe my eyes and ears in that moment. How could someone be such a terrible person and say something so insensitive during a time like this? We again told her to get the vet immediately. She left and came back in the room to say "I was being insensitive before." Apology or not, the damage was already done. We signed the paperwork and handed it back. The next minute the vet was in the room, gave him the meds and he was gone. Then quickly took him away. He was gone :( I could hear the girl with the paperwork walk to the desk and the two had a discussion that stated "oh they chose to euthanize and signed the paperwork, cool beans" as they shared another LAUGH. How does an emergency vet have such LITTLE COMPASSION for animals, zero professionalism and practice so dishonestly just to make a profit??? We now live every single day reliving the terror of Hurleys' last hours. read more

Horrible greedy people. Lack of communication. Uncaring. And then they mocked us. When questioned about certain procedures they couldn't explain why. Called us stupid and poor right outside the exam room door. We only ever saw the vet for about 40 seconds after being there for almost 7 hours. One the bright side.... our furry survived and is doing excellent! No thanks to them. Unprofessional and they lie. Do not take your pet here. I brought my 5 year old 5 lb Maltese, Lola, here for what was to be a 2 day stay for kidney disease. I signed a DNR. 11 hours later the vet called Lola was dead and they were trying to resuscitate her! Lola died when they inserted an NG tube which caused her lung to collapse and they didn't realize until 20 minutes later. So she suffered by suffocating then went into cardiac arrest. I got her medical record only to find out they incised her chest to perform invasive CPR! Then I was charged approximately $3,200 the absolute nerve. Zurich Insurance reached out to me on behalf of capital vet svcs. to see if I was pursuing a law suit. It took me 3 weeks to get the $3,200 charges reversed for killing my Lil girl Lola. read more
