Years ago, I opened an account at Bank of America's branch in Hewlett, NY. I haven't used it much,…read morebut the account was still there--or so I thought. After months of not getting any statements at all, I got a statement in the mail noting the account had been closed. Not only that, it was closed with a negative balance of about $28 dollars. Why? Because month after month after month, the bank had been deducting a fee I didn't even know they were charging me. When I called BOA's 800 number a few days after receiving the statement, they said nothing could be done because fees are fees and it was so many weeks after the account had been closed. (Then why did it take two months for me to receive a statement???) So I figured, no harm in visiting the local branch in a last-ditch effort to get back some of the money that was quietly, in a corporate way, stolen from me. One of the tellers was friendly and tried to be helpful but basically just updated a lot of old information on my now-closed account (which took about 15 minutes). Then, since I was in a hurry to get to work, she got a supervisor to look at the account. She answered my question super-quick: there's nothing we can do because the account was closed too long ago. I should have visited sooner. Well, perhaps I would have, if BOA had sent me a statement in time! The upshot it: Laurel and Hardy wasted 20 minutes of my life to tell me nothing, update information on an account that doesn't exist, and with crocodile smiles tell me, "you have a good day!" Blood boiling, I replied, "You don't," and left. Score another for the banksters.

I left Bank of America sometime last year, the only reason I chose to leave them was simply because…read moreI no longer wanted to use a corporate big bank. When I lived here I woke up one morning on one of my days off from work, my little brother had slept over my apartment. He was 17 and didn't have a checking account yet, so I took him with me to Bank of America to get a checking account. When he was getting his account I decided to open one too and leave TD bank. I didn't even have a license at the time and the closest TD bank was a 2 mile bike ride from my apartment so I decided to use Bank of America because I could walk to them. They also had more ATMs and more locations. Our bank clerk Valerie was so helpful to my brother and I. She was even more helpful when I had broken up with my ex-boyfriend. He had access to my checking account, since we were broken up I no longer wanted him to be able to use my account. Valerie helped me change the account to a new number, and she gave me a new debit card with my photo on it so only I could use it. I was also a victim of identity theft. I didn't have too much money that was able to be taken from my account but they refunded me the lost money right away. They also did some security checks when they thought some charges that were made in NYC weren't from me even though they were.
