I had a top of the line, trail-rated 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, that was hit and totaled. With the money CIG paid me, I can now only afford a used base model (well below the rating I had). They don't know the difference between sport, Sahara, Willy's or Rubicon. What a disaster. CIG has no preferred shops in Sacramento -- perhaps because no one is willing to work with them. So we had to select a reputable shop and schedule evals ourselves. The adjuster then determined that some of the collision damage was not covered because there was an undamaged (recessed) part in between the two damaged parts. We were then told there was no escalation path but to file a complaint with the state. After the shop disassembled and found damage all along the line between the externally visible parts, the adjuster continued to refuse to cover the full original damage, even asking the shop service advisor "were you there?" (at the accident) when the shop advisor said the damage was obviously from the same incident. Was the adjuster there either? How incredibly rude and unprofessional, not to mention stupid. Now despite our advisor leaving messages with seemingly every supervisor, no one will return her calls. The disputed portion is ~$1500 -- CIG has burned more than that in time debating this. Neither we nor the advisor have encountered such a ridiculous, recalcitrant insurer, and we will certainly be filing with the state. Avoid CIG! read more

What a HORRIBLE company. Nothing but issues with this company. Literally problem after problems since coming to CIG. Never sent mail stating there was a bill due after we had already paid out $1500 for 6 months and the following month we received a notice of cancellation. Got that one fixed and everything was up to par and took off a vehicle paid another $1500 for the next 6 months added a vehicle got a "this is not a bill" in the mail with our new insurance policy and 2 months later we received another cancelation of insurance effectively immediately. Never once did we receive a bill in the mailing claiming we owed an additional $600 and not one notification came via mail or email or phone stating there was an outstanding bill. Have argued with the policy company stating that we never received a bill and that on their end it shows a bill was sent out. Worst company to deal with in Auto Insurance. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this company. Turn around and find a different one. We will not be returning to this company. They have zero communication skills and, they lie. Repair bill came to $11k(Bay Area prices) on my 2 year old Honda Accord Hybrid. They say my car is worth $25k and they want to total my car on a $11k repair. AND they wanted me to take my now torn apart car (with striped down door and removed side skirt) out of the shop the same day. What kind of scam are they trying to pull? It makes no sense. I've had CIG for probably 8 years for both auto and home policies. I never made a claim on either policy, in fact, I've never made a claim on any auto or home policy in the past 45 and 34 years, respectively. This year, my home policy shoots up over 50%, like from $700 to over $1200. I also had a new roof put on, new fascia boards and painting a few years ago. I don't know if they do random inspections of properties, to adjust policy costs, but there is nothing wrong. Perhaps they don't like the color of my house? I don't live in a flood zone, or a wildfire prone environment. I wish they would explain the significant increase in cost. The good news is my auto policy did not change from the previous 6 months. Also, I've been trying to access my account to pay for my policies and the link to access accounts is broken. So I can't even pay for an overpriced policy! I saw another reviewer on a different platform claiming they had trouble accessing the payment portion of the website a few weeks ago and it looked like the same error I encountered. read more

They towed the car and very low balled the payout. We opted to keep the car. They towed it to our driveway with missing parts and WAY MORE DAMAGE than what was caused in the accident. We have had CIG auto insurance for 6 years. I have never been in an accident before this past March. I went 22 years with no accidents. the way CIG has handled my claim has been horrendous. They would not offer a fair and reasonable price for my car when they totaled it. I sent them 6 comps that fit their guidelines of what specifics needed to be in the comps that ranged from $16,000 - $19,000. CIG wouldn't offer me more than $11,000. I decided to take less money and ask for my car back to fix it. I couldn't stomach taking $11K for it. They had my car towed back to me. my vehicle has WAY more damage on it than was done in the accident. It is missing parts of the car, almost the entire front end. I have emailed them and called them repeatedly. I have photos of my car after the accident and now sitting in my driveway. It has been almost a month of me calling and emailing daily with absolutely no response. I'm so disappointed that I might have to retain an attorney. CIG did not like the estimate I received to have my car fixed 5500$ they sent THEIR adjuster out to look at my car THEIR adjuster agreed with the damages. Over 2 weeks later they sent a check for 800$!!!! No explanation nothing!!! You can never get ahold of anyone in the office and when you finally do they are all horrible!!! CIG rented a nice truck for our family during the process which really made a difference. When you have something stolen that you worked so hard for you feel so violated and taken advantage of. I am not a direct customer of CIG but a claimant, the reason I am putting a review is due to their claim process. Their client is 100% liable but yet I had to do the leg work on everything. Given, It could be due to their client insurance policy but I have dealt with other insurance parties and CIG is lacking in their process. I, as the claimant had to search for my own repair shop, perform follow ups, and dealt with reserving and calling my own rental. Of course, their client may not have rental coverage so I had to be out of pocket - they will only cover the time I had a rental and not the total loss of use. My Car is in the shop going on its 18th day so you could imagine the rental bill. I couldn't continue out of pocket so I decided to barrow family member vehicle. I have 3 children and live in a rural town which stores are 20 + mins away so just imagine what I had to deal with due to their client. The customer service of the adjuster needs work, her demeanor seemed like she didn't want to work with me. She was not very knowledgeable on their company. I would not recommend this insurance I cannot imagine being an actual client. Oh, My car is set to be completed tomorrow and I still have not received the check to pay for it. If you want an insurance company that could care less about you as a paying customer than this is the company for you. I was in a no fault accident involving a careless driver who totaled my car while I'm sitting at a stop light. It took CIG almost two weeks just to get my car from the tow yard. Did I know that? No. I was under the impression things were moving right along and I called multiple times with no answer. I left a message with the supervisor overseeing my claim and she finally called me back. Thats when I learned no progress has been made. I called the tow company myself to have them release my car. I then told my adjuster please communicate with me through this process. Absolutely ridicuous I even had to. Now we are almost a month in. They are denying things I am owed and only offering me cash value on my car. The person who hit me has 6 traffic violations from 2019. Lets normalize taking people's license away who can't drive. This company wants to offer you the minimum amount you are owed so they can make a profit. Not once did I feel like they were working for me. It took this accident for me to realize that I will not be renewing with them and I will take my business elsewhere. I have noticed them repsonding to negative reviews and it seems like they just throw an email at you and nothing actually comes from it. If I could give 0 stars I would. This is hands down the worst car insurance company I have ever dealt with. Their client hit me with 100% liability. They do not cover your rental car upfront, you have to pay and then they reimburse you. I am out of pocket for the rental every day I have it, and it's been sitting at the body shop for 7 days without them being able to touch it as they are still waiting on the estimate from their appraiser. I had to call my own tow truck. After they told me to call a tow truck, they are trying to say the car was drivable (from someone just taking pictures) and they won't cover the tow. However, the car was not drivable and could not go on the freeway. Additionally, none of their phone numbers work. The number on the person's insurance card for the company was not active. Honestly one of the worst insurance experiences of my life. Here are the highlights: I was insured with CIG for over three years. In the third year I had a claim for an A/C unit that got fried during a power outage. CIG said they would cover it and did, but I did all of the work. I took pictures. They asked me to get a statement from the A/C technician. I followed up the in claims agent, Arron, when he forgot to. I had to do a recorded phone interview that felt more like an interrogation. Then the agent forgot to hit the record button (he seemed distracted the whole time), so we got to do it all over again. Honestly, I feel like I did 80% of the work on the $5000 claim -- then they sent me a notice of non-renewal. They cancelled me. There was never a problem as long as I did not need the service I was paying for! So, I got insurance with a different company. BUT, I still got bills from CIG. Since my former policy had to be prepaid, I couldn't understand why CIG was still sending me bills with late fees! So I called them. After wasting another hour of my life, I learned that they extended the policy from THEIR cancellation date (without me knowing and without my permission) and billed me for it. REALLY! Don't we have state and federal insurance commissioner's who are supposed to protect us from these scam-like practices? Never again CIG, never again. read more

We just received a nonrenewal notice from CIG after being insured for about 13 years. We have been homeowners for 37 years and have never had a loss and have never filed a claim. CIG's justification is a high risk of "wind driven wildfire" with resulting embers, and "no possibility of mitigation". Right off the bat, whenever you see an insurance company stating there is no chance of mitigation, you know that they are done, regardless of whether mitigation is possible or not. In our case, there is no mitigation necessary. The wildfire predicate is a fiction. About 10 years ago a home in our community burned to the ground. It was an electrical fire, but like all fires posed some risk of embers causing damage to other nearby homes. There were multiple homes within 500 feet of the lost structure. Not a single report of damage. All of the homes in our community have tile roofs and are sided with stucco, brick, or stone. We have two small (6' x 12') decks. The deck on the ground floor is wood. The upstairs deck is covered in a fire retardant material. The rails and vertical posts are wood. The only other flammable materials on the exterior of our home are the door frames and the terminal ends of the roof support structures. A year ago we removed a wooden arbor and are not replacing it. In our community of 51 homes, we have meandering wetlands. Although we have limited ability to groom the wetlands, the vast majority of the foliage is green (as would be expected in wetlands). These wetlands were extant at the inception of the policy, and are actually less 'wild' than they were at the inception of the policy owing to better management. The wetlands did not catch fire when the aforementioned house fire occurred. About two years ago, a residential acreage lot that was densely populated with oak trees was clear cut by the developer. It is maintained with herbicides to the level of the dirt. That lot was about a quarter mile from our community. Outside of our wetlands, which are green, that stand of oaks represented the highest concentration of fuel in a half mile. The densest remaining fuel source - a half mile away - is a 37 acre parcel with a cluster of oaks that actually slowed the progress of a grass fire several years ago that originated next to the shoulder of I-80. Since that fire, the grasslands where it originated have been replaced by the largest commercial shopping center in the county. There is no significant threat to our west. A vacant residential lot behind me is mown to a height of two inches. The nearest threats to the north and south are in a fire district that does not serve our area. To the north, we are bounded by another community of homes which would have to burn before we are threatened. We are the farthest home in our community from that community. From the south, there are no parcels that are undeveloped. The nearest area of open dry grass is directly acroos the road from the property mentioned earlier that was clear cut. If a fire begins in, or reaches these parcels, the nearby fire district will have responded long before the fire could become a 'wildfire'. The local station (even though it is not part of our fire district) would have an average response time into the threat zones of two to three minutes after receiving a report. The nearest threat to our east is an open field that will burn to the edge of a small lake and then run out of fuel. Our fire district would obviously act swiftly to protect a neighborhood of 51 homes. Needless to say, residents would also act rapidly to ready themselves for embers that would fall - on houses that basically aren't built to burn. There is a fire hydrant 70 feet from the corner of my garage. I have hose bibs in 7 locations on the back of my property. Although I would hate to see my foliage destroyed, I would use my hoses on the home and the small shed that is built and finished in the same materials as the house. If my hoses melt, I can pump water from my pool. The front of the property is landscaped in green vegetation that is never left in a combustible condition. My house would catch fire if I doused my lower deck with a propellant. Otherwise, it will require an electrical or kitchen fire for the house to burn. Did I mention the fire hydrant? There are 4 property managers residing in our community. They manage property in 4 counties. There are multiple sales agents also living in the community. At least two residents have social media followers numbering in the tens of thousands and at least one with a following numbering in the hundreds of thousands. So, sayonara CIG. Good luck with your public relations fiasco. By the way, when that comes down, there will be "no possibiity for mitgation". UPDATE: CIG posted a response to my review within 90 minutes. It's laughable that they want to restore my "trust and understanding". Understand this: I am not renewing CIG's policy on my rental property. Trust me. read more

We have been insured for our two vehicles since 2013. In the last year our insurance on our vehicles has increased from $452 every 6 months to $857 for Vehicle 1 (2015 Mini Cooper), and $434 to $498 every six months for Vehicle 2( 2016 Subaru Crosstrek). We drive each vehicle less than 3000 miles per year and are accident and claim free. We finally decided to research other companies after our agent would not return our phone calls. We are going with highly rated AARP Hartford at a savings for exactly the same coverage of almost $1,000.00 per year. We should have switched a long time ago. I called they said just transfer the policy to a new broker and it will Be renewed. Then CIG changes their tune and says sorry thanks for nothing non renewal stands. Absolute BS, terrible customer service and customer retention after spending 10k in premiums with them. Wish I would have had a claim after all this. This has been the worst experience I've ever dealt with an insurance company. My car caught on fire by itself while parked and turned off for about 3 hours. The fire began on the passenger side and thankfully an onlooker called 911 when they the smoke coming out of my car. The fire department knocked out both of my front windows and put the fire out immediately. However, everything in in the car was ruined and the car was a complete loss. I immediately called my insurance rep who is a broker for CIG. He said to go get a rental car and he would take care of the rest. I was given a ride to another town to pick up a rental car from Enterprise. They gave me a Nissan Altima which they said would be covered by CIG. CIG rep calls me same day and I fill her in on all of the details. Fast forward a couple days, I find out my car still has not been towed. Pretty awkward because it's a small tourist town and there's a tow yard literally across the street. I call the CIG to follow up. The rep says it's really expensive to keep the car in a tow yard and their inspector is not available. Not my problem!! She then says I probably won't be covered because I should've replaced the battery under my passenger seat. Okay what now? I didn't even know there was a battery under the passenger side seat. Now it's been a few more days and my car still hasn't been towed. I email them to follow up. Next day I'm out of town on a camping trip and they call me because they can't locate my car at their tow yard. Ummm that's because you haven't towed it yet! Was I supposed to figure this out? SMH - face palm - OMG So I get back to civilization and car now has a ticket. I'm not paying this thing. Not my problem right? I email my rep. She's like what does it say? Well I don't know - I don't live there. I know people there so they send me a photo to pass on. Fast forward to 10 or so days since the car fire, the car finally gets towed. I called Jeep (my car manufacturer) and explain the situation and I called my dealership service department to see what the deal is with the battery. They never heard of the issue and told me the battery shouldn't have been the cause. Thank you! Finally someone on my side. They asked where the car was towed and mentioned it should've been towed to them in the first place. So I get a hold of CIG again and fill them in on the Jeep info. They don't care because I have full coverage and am going to get paId out anyways. I'm thinking what if this happens to someone else? Shouldn't this issue of a car startIng on fire by itself be taken seriously? Okay fast forward to another week or so and I get a call from Claims. Apparently I am only supposed to be covered for my rental for 3 days... umm you didn't tow my car for at least two weeks and still haven't cut a check for my car. How? What? Now my blood is boiling and I apologize to the person on the phone becuase she's not the one I've been dealing with. Sorry lady but I'm so mad I can't even think. I think she felt bad because she said she would allow me to extend my rental car. Thank you! Please send the rest to me in writing because I just can't even. I get home and review her email - I see the bottom line on the payout. Not happy, car is worth way more. This thing was in excellent condition and had all the bells and whistles. I agree with J.M.'s comment. I have held multiple policies with CIG since the 2003 timeframe. Then last week I received a non-renewal notice related to some vague comments about fire, embers etc., etc. I live in a residential neighborhood with houses on all sides, not in the middle of open space. I have a firehouse around the corner. I don't feel like I am in a fire-prone area, but my city has been tagged as a risk. My broker told me that once CIG makes their decision not to renew, it is a moot point. Talk about risk-adverse. Isn't this the industry that they are supposed to be supporting?? If I could give -0- I would. They denied 2 different claims on my mothers policies that we made during the pandemic. The first on a claim for the mold and fungus that occurred in her basement and under her rental house, after a pipe burst under the house. We were told by the plumbers that we had to call a restoration company to get rid of the mold before anyone could do repairs. We only submitted a claim for the mold issue, not the plumbing. And it was for reimbursement after we paid to get it fixed. Denied. The second was when all of her jewelry was stolen during her stay in assisted living, ( the claim on her personal residence) which occurred not long before she passed. It took quite a while to get a copy of the police report during that time. Both denied because of what they said were not timely claims. She was in the middle of dying during the pandemic, and it was difficult to get the documentation we needed. They never said the claims were invalid, just that they weren't timely. Apparently receipts and police report didn't matter. She paid thousands of dollars in premiums over the years and we continued to pay after her death until the houses were sold. My experience with CIG was not a good one. I switched my premium payments from automatic deduction to bill pay and that's when the problems started. I sent my payment to CIG's address in CA and the money was deducted the next day from my bank account, but I was told I hadn't paid the premium and fees were accessed. I called CIG to explain the situation and was told the fees had been reversed, but they weren't. I paid the next bill without the accessed fees and the result was that my insurance was cancelled. Then I received another bill for unpaid fees and, supposedly, part of a mystery month. I have had auto insurance for decades and had never been cancelled until now. read more

My dealings with CIG's insurance agent (Ms. Ellis) left a disgusting taste in my mouth. Not sure if they train their employees to use bully-like tactics, but it should be unethical to do so. I recently had my car broken into and the worst part of the entire experience was dealing with CIG. They wasted hours and hours of my time listing and collecting information on items that they evidently knew from the start they would choose not to cover. They immediately asked questions trying to get me to characterize things in a way that minimizes their payment. I've dealt with other insurance companies twice before which were surprisingly pain free. Insurance companies like CIG are the reason there are horror stories. I've moved my insurance elsewhere, as are several relatives. Avoid at all costs. read more

Horrible claim service on a relatively minor amount, about $1860. Claimed they could get the repair done for 37% less than my estimate from a reliable buy modest cost body shop. Claimed they enclosed their estimate, but it wasn't there, nor was any info about where I could get it done for their amount. They also failed to mention I have rental car coverage for when it's in the shop. This took weeks, by the way, and they sent a check for about $160. In 13 years with them, I have had two claims, getting the first paid was like pulling teeth. This second one tells me they really don't care about being fair in their computations. There's too many other insurers to continue to give CIG my money, or to keep recommending them to friends. I feel duped. read more

I was a customer of CIG for 43 years and had only one small claim. In October 2019 I got a letter stating that because of "brush mapping" I was being dropped and I would have to get another policy with the California Fair plan coverage. My close neighbors have not had the same problem. I have had a very frustrating and rushed time finding insurance that I could afford. This company seems heartless about their customers and I would encourage everyone to not use them for their home insurance. read more
