One of my favorite part of Cape May is my trips to the lighthouse. Love all the history. I always feel this is the gathering spot for so many travelers. Situated by the beach. You can take a visit at the lighthouse, stroll by the beach, have a bite to eat at the food truck or travel across the parking lot and engage in some bird watching. This location should definitely be a must visit when you are in the area. read more

Yes, you must go in - unless you're not into historical aspects, hate climbing steps and don't like heights. This is THAN when it's not worth being dragged along and you'll be like several of the people I've witnessed that climbed with me that day that did a fair share of complaining. If only complaining burned calories, heh. There's historical literature in front of the cutesy gift shop, and already I overheard a few people scoff about how $8 is like, robbery. Or a drop into a lighthouse to be able to operate a lighthouse? You can tell the sweet attendant at the bottom of the steps, who took my admission heard it all. We shared a pleasant conversation and where she even offered me a discount on a nearby attraction. I started to embark up stopping on each landing, not because I was already lazy and tired (though the steps are steep and I highly recommend sticking to one lane, for those going up and going down), but because that's where more historical literature hung interestingly which I've noticed most of the complainers ignoring as they brushed past me if the rest of them didn't stop (those who fail history are doomed to repeat it, aye)... either the latter were really interested too or they stopped because they saw someone else (Oh, goodness. Me!) stop and monkey see, monkey doo doo. Heh. Either way, I quietly trekked along getting in my steps in ways betting (insert current fancy trendy version of a pedometer here) inaccurately could measure until I greeted a lonesome, but kind and energetic lighthouse attendant taking questions from the top and an outlet with captivating views that stretched of Cape May Point for miles. Rumor has it you can see up to 20 miles to your south so that'd be a birds eye view of Lewes/Rehoboth Beach, DE if your vision is good. But if your vision isn't so great from yelping so much (‍like your local helper yelper!) you're just grateful for the view, probably having a decent heart from not being out of breath from climbing 199 steps one way) and the kindness of a few strangers here some whom I've engaged in pleasant conversation with. $8 ticket for one adult will earn you a trip up the Cape May lighthouse. 199 steps to the top but plenty of landings to stop and pretend to enjoy and read the plaques (while catching your breath)! Good views from the top. You can see some landmarks including Atlantic City in the distance. While you're there, take the short stroll to the pier at the lake. It will give you some fantastic views of the local swans. Lovely place! read more

My sister is disabled with a medical alert and mobility service dog and was refused access to climbing the lighthouse. They stated she was not allowed to climb with her service dog due to the concern that there will small spaces and there would be children that would be afraid or allergic to dogs. They stated that she would only be allowed to climb the lighthouse during the last hour of operation and if they call to ask before. They arrived in the morning when it was not busy and there were few people. They climbed the lighthouse last year in 2022 with no issues. This goes directly against ADA regulations regarding reasonable accommodations. Worries about allergies or people being afraid of dogs are specifically noted in the ADA guidelines as not being lawful reasons for exclusion. Allowing the dog to work in the lighthouse does not foundationally change the experience of the attraction and therefore the service dog lawfully cannot be excluded. We will be contacting park administration to prevent future service dog teams from being unlawfully excluded. We loved visiting the lighthouse in the past and hope we can climb again in the future. read more

All these years I've been going down to Cape May and I've never gone inside the Lighthouse. Until now. Finally took the kids to the top of the Lighthouse and I must say the views alone make it well worth the time and money. We went early and there weren't many people there, which was good because we walked right up to the top in just a few short minutes, even with little ones in tow. On the way down it had gotten a little busier, creating a few people jams going up and down the narrow spiral staircase. Luckily, there are a few landings along the way where slower or larger folks can step off and let others pass to keep traffic moving. The climb is easy, and it's not nearly as claustrophobic as you might think. A million times more enjoyable than climbing to the top of the State of Liberty. I definitely recommend it. read more

Historic Lighthouse. As lighthouses go, this one is worth the visit if only just to have a look from the top. The place was built way back when and there is a load of artifacts and such that you can look at to get an idea of what running a lighthouse was all about back in the day. The walk to the top is somewhat unnerving as it is an open stairwell inside - do not look down. The view from the top is wonderful - as expected. The grounds are large and there is another part over on the beach where you can look at old photos and see how far out the land used to jut before erosion took it away. A great way to kill a few hours, get some sun and learn a few things. read more

The hours are inaccurate, called and they were open on Sunday until 4pm. The park is nice, parking lot is large with plenty of spots. The beach view is nice too and the multiple trails. The lighthouse itself is easy to walk up and has nice views. The top level is very windy and hard to stand outside. The gift shop is cute and small and has a few Cape May things. read more

If it's your first time at cape may, this lighthouse is a must! the climb on the top wasnt too bad but you will definitely be out of breath when you reach the top. It took maybe 10 to 15 minutes to get up the spiral staircase. On a whim we decided to trek down to CM to climb to the top of the lighthouse. It was a fun activity on a gorgeous day. $10.00 an adult, $5.00 per child (I think). @199 steps to get to the top...six landings...to pause and look out...but once at the top, what a view! That certainly didn't disappoint. Many adults with kids went up and came down fairly quickly...I guess kids aren't as impressed? Idk, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

Very nice little tourist stop in Cape May. There's a large grounds available for walking and bird watching. Went on a Sunday and there were little market stall set up around the Lighthouse. Got me some very delicious honey! While touring the lake/birdwatch area, we came across live snakes and frogs. Definately a fun visit! read more

Paid our admission fees to climb the lighthouse, view from the top was amazing. On the way out, we grabbed a painted Cape May seashell outside the entrance and made a donation inside to help paint the lighthouse. Walked into the gift shop to purchase a few souvenirs as we were tourists. After I spent $25 in the gift shop, I asked the lady inside to wrap the seashells with their tissue paper so they won't break. Her response was well, no offense, but I'm not going to be wrapping every seashell, I know it's a donation, but I can't afford that. Between our admission tickets to climb the lighthouse, a donation for the seashells and $25 in souvenirs, you can't afford a one cent wrapping paper for the seashells?? I'll mail back the wrapping paper for the cost of a stamp, an envelope, and ink in my pen if it's really that big of a deal. 5 stars for the lighthouse and the view, but overall this place gets 3 stars for the response of the lady in the gift shop. read more

No visit, especially a first visit, to Cape May is complete without visiting the lighthouse. We didn't even know Cape May had one, but when we got there, our first objective was to go on a jog from our beach house over to the lighthouse to check it out. The views of this lighthouse are better than the views from the lighthouse. Clear photos are tough, and there honestly just isn't much to photograph around Cape May from the lighthouse. Still, the attraction is well maintained and you can easily spend a morning between the lighthouse and the bird sanctuary. This was the last lighthouse I visited on the NJ lighthouse challenge. Beautiful building. I can not quote prices, or admission days as they were all adjusted for the challenge so check before you go. Big beautiful lighthouse. Grounds were clean, plenty of parking. I wanna come back! I'm completely out of shape for climbing all the way up but hell yes it's worth it. The view from the small windows on the way up and the top deck are all amazing. Granted we went during December and it was super cold but it didn't take away from the experience. I would like to do this again in the summer when its warmer and less layers to weigh me down with all the stairs. Although I will say I take pride in the fact I was able to get to the top of the light house in heeled boots, especially considering there were spaces in the staircase's design and the heels are on the thin side so every now and then my heel would sink through slightly. Other bonus? I think it was either the visitor's center or museum or both that had the turtles. Pokey the Turtle has a permanent place in my heart. I'm not the type of person to care much for living creatures other than humans but this flailing little bastard was so adorable, it made me wish I had a pet turtle. It was flailing along the tank, following me as I traced my hand along the glass. So effin cute. I took one pic where it had its arm covering its face in a dramatic "No! You are completely caged in at the top so no worries if you are afraid of heights. You can't fall out if you wanted to. Access to the beach and a nature trail if your legs aren't jelly. Go to this lighthouse, climb it and hang out in the park! This place is magical. The lighthouse itself is a great climb. Pace yourself on the way up and be rewarded with INCREDIBLE panoramic views of the Delaware Bay, Atlantic Ocean, Pennsylvania and the Delaware coast. They are being very mindful of the present situation with the pandemic and are only allowing 10 people in at a time masked. The park and outdoor bird sanctuary on the same property are worth spending plenty of time in, walking the trails and taking in the wildlife and native vegetation. It is worth traveling to Cape May just do visit this spectacular location. read more

If you are planning a trip to Cape May at any time of the year, then a trip to the historic light house is a must. Much like going to see the Liberty Bell while on a trip to Philadelphia. The state park is clean and in good repair. For those that are in a wheel chair, good news-- there is a ramp to get you up to the ocean/beach level and you can see the ocean and the Chesapeake bay from atop the ramp. It might be different in the summer when the season is in full swing, but on our trip last Sunday, The actual lighthouse was not open to the public. It's a picture you must take and a journey you can say you've made while at "exit 0". kids are sure to love it and it's a nice way to get sidetracked from all of the eating and shopping that you're bound to do in this great little town. read more

The State Park offers many opportunities for nature lovers, including the Hawk Watch platform and well-developed and marked nature trails, and guided walks and programs are offered. Summertime programming is offered to introduce visitors to the history of the Lighthouse and is free of charge. The beach is free but swimming is not allowed. All areas of the park are "carry in, carry out" in regard to trash or recyclables; please do not litter. I've climbed this lighthouse at least 5 times and the view once you're at the top is amazing. The gift shop at the base takes donations and sells merchandise pertaining to it. On my last visit i bought an oil painting which hangs in my hall stairwell and people who see it instantly fall in love with it. This is a must see when visiting Cape May NJ. Love coming here whenever we visit Cape May! It's a definite must do. We love walking on the trails by the hawk watch! You get beautiful views on both sides (pond on one side and beach on the other). Visiting once is just about enough. It was beautiful and I'm happy I was able to experience it however I am terrified of heights (I wanted to experience it regardless of my fear!) Once on top I was outside for maybe 15 seconds and got super dizzy... Not to mention my group was talking turns carrying my three year old up the stairs since he gave up after two stair cases. Can't blame the little man. It's a nice workout, not overwhelming, just enough to feel it. Truly one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the country, basically on the level of the famous beacons in Oregon, such as the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Tillamook Rock. Admission is very cheap, and I recommend donations to this historic landmark. I don't recommend going up the 199 steps if you're afraid of heights! But if you're not, I HIGHLY recommend going up! The view is spectacular and can't be compared to anything else in this world. I could stare out onto the horizon for hours. It's a gorgeous sight from the ground, or at the top! The cute little store only a few steps away sells everything from lighthouse-themed jewelry to books to magnets. You're sure to find something there! Lovely experience. We went during the summer on a Wednesday morning. They had a Family Fun event with pirates singing, pirate hat craft, the limbo and giveaways. Our toddler enjoyed it! The lighthouse has a small gift shop that's worth a quick visit, but real reason to go is the climb to the top and the view once you get there. The climb should take an average adult less than 10 or 15 minutes, even with pauses on the landings to look out the windows and to read the plaques. The stairs are metal, circular, and have handrails on both sides. If you are not overly afraid of closed spaces or heights, and you are in average condition, the climb is not bad. Once at the top, you can go out on a railed and "fenced" platform that circles the lighthouse. The view is amazing! For $7, you can't beat this attraction. read more

This is a great place to learn about the history of Cape May and of the duties that the Lighthouse serves. Be prepared to climb up 200 steps to the top, and their is a landing to rest every 30 steps. It will be right so if you are claustrophobic this is not the place for you. And if you are afraid of heights this is also not the place for you. Great historical landmark. If you have asthma, or difficult walking up flights of stairs i'd be weary going up the lighthouse stiars. The air pressure changes and can cause you to become light headed as well as a line of people building up behind you. Its fun for tourists and has a great view! We went on a Sunday and Climbed up the 199 stairs (not a bad climb at all) beautiful views from the top. Spiral staircase but has lil window stop area where you can take mini breaks when walking up. When you reach the top it's best to stay towards the right hand side of the lighthouse because the left area is super windy! read more
