Historic Cold Spring Village - Museums Near Me - Cape May, New Jersey

I visited Historic Cold Spring Village after I saw they were dog friendly. I was traveling with my pet and finding pet friendly places/activities was a big priority. The entry to see the village is $16. I paid the fee and began to walk around the village. At the second building we were turned away and said dogs could not go into the buildings. This upset me as the person at the entry gate didn't mention this and seemed excited to see a dog. Not being able to explore inside any of the buildings this ruined the experience of the village. I returned to the gate and asked for a refund. The girl was really nice and issued a refund right away. I am grateful for this customer service. They are not pet friendly as previously marketed. My experience at the village may have been different with a higher score but this detail really put a damper on the experience. read more

Historic Cold Spring Village is a lovely spot to check out to soak in some history and culture in southern New Jersey. It's situated in Cape May and offers insight into life in the 1800s. On our visit, they were hosting a Revolutionary War Reenactment, which was fun to see, plus special speakers such as "Martha Washington." They have dressed up folks who shed light on different chores and tasks in each building. I enjoyed the printing house. Plus they have an on-site bakery, a restaurant, and a brewery, not to mention Levi the horse, cows, pigs, and chickens. Very cool all around and a great place for families to visit. read more

This is really a hidden gem in Cape May County. It's a historical museum with real buildings from the periods and include a schoolhouse, an iron Smith, a fabric place, a grocery store among many others. There's even an ice cream parlor. And there's some farm animals and just a beautiful tree covered path that is great to walk around and it's very reasonable. They also have several events over the year. They I've been a member there for probably over 20 years and it's great! Really something else to do at the shore for the whole family. They have many volunteers and others who talk about the history of the buildings and answer questions and it's just a really interesting experience. read more

We spent a wonderful afternoon here with our 5 year old and 2 year old ! There is an admission fee for adults and kids 3 and up. It's a self guided tour and there are people that are in the houses that are dressed up. The people in the houses had a lot of information about the history of each building. There are some hands on things children can do like games and pumping water. It was a nice history lesson for our kids! read more

Love that this place embraces the community and hosts so many fun events for kids and families. We really enjoyed going to the Halloween parade. It was s great time to interact with all the vendors and the kids dressed in their costumes! I feel like there is a little something for everyone here.... Including an ice cream parlor. read more

There is a ton of knowledge that the volunteers and staff (village people, as I'll describe them) are excited to share with you. The buildings are restored to mid-1850s and set up to represent a town as it may have been, even though the buildings are originally from across Cape May County. However, the village lacks a bit of focus about the era, and there isn't a consistent story through out, and the village people jump across eras and times. There are many demonstrations, like book binding, blacksmithing, tinsmithing, weaving, etc., and all of the village people are happy to share their craft. Regardless of some inconsistencies with the time period, we had a blast and learned a lot about the history of this region. read more

Very fun and interactive museum that anyone of any age will enjoy. Throughout our visits there was a variety of live exhibits such as blacksmithing, tin making, pottery, basket weaving, etc. to watch. There is a brewery, bakery, ice cream shoppe and hot dog stand all had delicious products. Definitely worth a stop. read more

Are you an American patriot that has a yearning for learning ? Let me start by saying , I sure do . Walking from house to house , the blacksmith , basket weaver , book binder , baker etc were enthusiastic, knowledgeable is their subject area and friendly good genuine people . I was extremely impressed by the historical relevance and educational programs the Village has to offer all ages . I loved reading what the students in the community find interesting about Americas history and how they can learn to appreciate the story of our country's great past. The love, appreciation and dedication of history is extremely relevant and necessary for our youth to understand and acknowledge today. I appreciate the efforts of community and each individual who makes this place come alive . They have water spritzers to cool off , chickens roaming around , a restaurant , brewery , ice cream shop , and games for all ages to play . I was walking around in the off season when they were closed but there is a lot of stuff to see here, all kinds of historical structures, some farm animals for kids to check out, pretty interesting destination if you like history or just want to walk around in a pleasant wooded environment.. read more

Disappointed. We took our grandchildren there this week. I had remembered it from a few . year ago. It was then, a fun place. We went this week to find it, barely operating. 5 of the 10 or so shops" were closed. Nothing was going on. A few pigs in mud, no one greeting you in the shops, really nothing to see or do. It cost us about $35 for my husband myself, and two small children. Too bad to see what has happened there. read more

Really neat old historical town setting close to everything cape may. We didn't know about the village until we went to the naval museum in Wildwood and we were given passes, great idea for them because we zipped right on over to the village when we finished up lunch. It's a neat blast from the past where they show you how wood working, farming, schooling and even metal working was done a couple hundred years ago. The volunteers really show you how things were done and allow the kids to get a real hands on experience with everything that can't hurt them! The entire walk really shouldn't take more than a couple hours and here is even a bakery and ice cream shop if you want/need a snack. We were told about the brewery but it isn't open as of July 4th weekend 2016, so we have another reason to come back! read more

this is such a wonderful place it is super interesting. You can sign up for the ghost tour (its amazing). At first I did not want to go as a child but as I got older I went and kept going. I have also recomended it to my family and friends. my kids did not really find it extremely interesting but when they get older I'm sure they will want to go. (for the kids walking house to house.) Having been to Sturbridge Village (MA) and Strawberry Banke (NH), Cold Spring Village ranks right up there with them. While it seemed slightly smaller than the New England comparisons, the setting is wooded with some farmland, which made a hot summer visit refreshing with the breeze. They do special events on weekends and I happened to catch their Pirate event. Pirates were roaming the village singing and dancing and there were the rebellious ones shooting at each other. Villagers in each of the buildings interacted with everyone and there was a visiting group of blacksmiths that allowed kids to help them with things. There's food available in the village, but I didn't take advantage of the restaurant or concession stand. I had lunch waiting for me in Wildwood. read more

This historic site is well worth a visit particularly on one of the summer or fall weekends when a special event is hosted. I've been to the Civil War re-enactment several times and always enjoyed it. This time we took my daughter to Hands On History weekend which was equally wonderful. They gave each child a passport book and after visiting each village site and/or completing a small task like making a period craft, the passport book was stamped. When all stamps were filled, the child could collect a "prize" at the Country Store. My daughter absolutely loved it and hasn't stopped playing with the little corn husk doll she made there - it's so refreshing to see something so simple enjoyed. The staff all seem to love their jobs, I suspect most are volunteers. The attention to detail and devotion to history is also commendable. This village is a series of relocated, original structures & the staff is dressed in period garb too (which looks awfully hot in the heat of summer ). I truly felt like we stepped back in time, since the location itself is off the beaten "shore" track. I would highly recommend going. I didn't mind the entrance fee either as I felt it would be put to good use on further historic preservation. They have a restaurant on site, and also sell light refreshments. The little bakery sells excellent baked goods too. read more

This was our 4th or 5th visit to Historic Cold Spring Village. We enjoy visiting all the craft shops and seeing how people lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Our favorites are the basket weaver, inn/tavern, book binder, printer, blacksmith and of course the ice cream shop. There is also a bakery but it was very mediocre, we got the cookies and the apple fritters, both were below average. All of the reenactors are very knowledge on their topics and quite friendly. This place is very family friendly. We would like to see more farm animals and a return of the horse carriage rides. read more

What a cool place. It reminds me of Waterloo Village in northern NJ. My review is based on the brewery and ghost tour. We had a wonderful time here. I love going to breweries and ordering flights to taste multiple beers. When I told the bartender we wanted their IPAs and whatever she would recommend. Her response is well you are going to be disappointed because we don't have any IPAs made. She did recommend one beer and it was the only one we drank but it was good. They offer free fire pits, outdoor games like corn hole, open mic on Fridays and outside food is allowed. We then went on a ghost tour through the village available on Thursdays and Saturdays with a real medium named Bill. It was a pretty active place and the guide/medium did a super job. My only wish is that we had spent more time here and experienced the village during the day. It would have been nice to have dinner at the Grange restaurant but there was nothing vegetarian available so we picked something up on our way there. I can't wait to visit again on our next trip to Cape May. read more

As New Englanders we have our fair share of historic villages to choose from and this one was amazing. We hit it mid week and the crowds were small. The people working there were informative, friendly and hands on! Our 5 and 7 year olds got to use a two man saw which was a highlight but the kids games, horse ride and fresh made cookies were right up there! The tinsmith spent 15-20 minutes talking to us and even entertained the question of who was cooler (blacksmith or tinsmith) by our 7 year old without missing a beat! We had lunch at the Grange and that was a hit as well. Definitely will be back! We biked from ferry which was a bit more highway than we expected (2 miles + until trail) but all worked out fine. read more

We went here while at the Jersey shore, and were very pleasantly surprised by this living history museum. This place has many original, historic buildings with people dressed in period clothing performing the actual tasks of the times: tinsmith, blacksmith, basket weaver, woman spinning wool into yarn on an old wheel, woodworker, broom maker etc. Take your time and listen to the knowledgeable and very friendly people who are passionate about history. As a teacher from out of state, I was truly impressed by the entire experience and wish I could bring my 4th grade students here. The children that I observed were very interested and having a great time while learning! Live animals, a horse and buggy ride included in price, several lunch and dining options, a Country Store that sells all the wares that the craftspeople make and much, much more. We have attended the Celtic Festival at Cold Spring Village for the past several years It was alway very nice. That's until we went this year. It was terrible. Only around 4 vendors selling things and they were closing up their tables and leaving early. Hardly any entertainment. It's a shame, because it was always a very nice event in the past. This will be the last year that we attend. It's a disgrace to charge people admission and have a terrible event like this.We went to other festivals with free admission and they were much better. Some of the workers seemed disinterested, too. My father inlaw paid for 2 hotdogs at the snack stand and the man didn't even tell the person in charge to cook them. He stood and waited 20 minutes before he finally got his hotdogs. read more
