The Canyon View Ranch is truly a one of kind. As inviting as the photos on the website are they do not do justice to how well designed, maintained, staffed, and managed this home away from home is for your dog. We left our 22-month-old, high energy, Bernedoodle for boarding and training at the ranch. Paraphrasing the owner / trainer Joe after our pet had spent one week at the ranch, "He is a lot of dog". After hearing that we knew they knew our guy! Even though I had worked on training our dog, given certain situations, e.g. encountering an aggressive leashed dog, a lot of visitors to our home, he could be very hard to control. Now, after he has "graduated" from John's training, our dog and I have the tools for him to be more successful around other dogs and people. Joe, John and the rest of the staff create a fun, attentive and caring environment in a world class facility for boarding your dog. Boarded my 7 month old puppy Lola here for 10 days and they took such incredible care of her. Lola is very anxious, has separation anxiety and doesn't really like people except for me. So I was incredibly nervous about leaving her for the first time and for such a long time. Trainer John and the entire staff went above and beyond to take such great care of her. They really took the time to understand her and they are truly experts at training caring for dogs like Lola and I'm sure all dogs. Lola transformed by the end of her stay and warmed up to everyone. A warning to anybody considering Canine boarding or training at Canyon View Ranch. My personal experience for training / boarding was a disaster. My six month old Jack Russell Terrier was diagnosed with Kennel Cough which led to Pneumonia. I was held responsible for over $1800 in Vet Bills to save my dog's life. I also lost well over $2000 total for training services not rendered. Randall Neece and partner Joe had the audacity to file a small claims suit against me to collect additional money. The courts ruling was in my favor of course. By my personal experience, I suggest seeking an alternate boarding / training facility which does not have a track record of sick canine's as a result of unsanitary facilities. This is my personal experience with Canyon View Ranch boarding and training which resulted in a sick dog and no formal training as promised. May be a nice place, but the road going up there is treacherous and my first thought upon arriving was "What happens in a fire"?!? Only one way out and no way in, if you were to want to come up and get your dog! Just a thought and when I brought it up to a staff member, she told me they would call all the owners and try to get some of the dogs into a transport - but, I have been in fires before and everything happens so fast and the smoke is the scariest part, because you can't breathe and then what?!? Beyond grateful to live near such an incredible Pet resort, aka boarding location for my dog. We kept calling it "camp" because it is campy, in all the best ways! With the waterfalls, ponds, endless turf and in December the glorious Christmas decor we felt we were leaving our pup at a pet camp! Being the self indulgent, pooch obsessed pet owners that we are, we literally harangued these poor people daily for updates on our fluff muffin. Of course he was a rockstar, got plenty of attention and the opportunity to play with other puppies and dogs just his size. No need for dog socialization with my main squeeze, he's all set after being here and our countless outings ahead of his time here. They are not allowing tours or people into the office to align with social distancing requirements but they are open (thank God). We ended up here after an epic failure with a Rover.com house/dog sitter proved to be unacceptably flaky. Thankfully they were able to take us days before our trip and they trained him for all 6 days of his stay. He is a puppy, and I've received a lot of judgment for leaving him but snow and small young dogs sounds like a bad adventure in my book and given my husband and I's demanding work schedules, we are so incredibly grateful to have rediscovered this place as I know our work trips will overlap again at some point but we'll have Canyon View Ranch in our back pocket for our furry love. I absolutely felt it was worth the added expense - he's more confident, understands more & got a ton of 1 on 1 attention while there. Given the amount he normally receives from my husband and I, this was a huge plus for us as he is accustomed to being with people. He's also used to being outside so for us, the facilities here made so much sense as it was aligned with his regular life. It's also the same flora & fauna so no radical change for him. The schedule too matched up perfectly as we are up at 6 and he winds down at 8 naturally. I'm a 1st time dog owner, it's my husbands 5th, but this location left us with so much peace of mind. I will not hesitate to use them again in the future and hopefully, I'll exhibit more restraint in inquiring about my dog... or not! Since they are so accommodating. read more

I really wanted to have this be a perfect experience. My dog seemed to have a great time, but he came back with Kennel Cough as many other reviews state. Look I get it, it's extremely common LA boarding facilities, but if we've learned anything from COVID it's that closing temporarily and taking it seriously helps. My biggest frustration is that they didn't offer any kind of price cut when my dog got sick in their care. Fundamentally, I was totally happy paying $100/day (plus the $50/day of training that they suckered me into ) for my dog to enjoy their dog Disneyland facilities, but they had to keep him inside and away from other dogs when he got sick. I understand why they did it, but I think that at the VERY LEAST they should have cut the price for the days he had to be inside since he wasn't enjoying the full amenities. As someone in the service industry, it would have been the right thing to do and would have made me a lot more likely to consider boarding him there again. Overall, my dog seemed in to be in good spirits, but we'll see how long that lasts after he gets no socialization for 2 weeks. It's no fun to come home from vacation and have to quarantine my dog. This is a wonderful Dog Training place and also boarding. Located high up in Topanga Canyon the site and atmosphere is like Heaven for our furry family. I have seen dogs being dropped off there who have been before, and they look so happy and expectant. We sent our lab, Jaco, there for 4 weeks training and board after being told by everyone Jaco came in contact with "That dog needs training!" He was approx a year old when we took him there, he was badly in need of socializing. We live at the top of Topanga Canyon where we don't see many people, and everytime a human or another dog came within sight, Jaco would go beserk. It went in this awful loop because the more he wanted to jump on them the tighter we held him back, and it was awful and sad because Jaco is normally such a happy and outgoing dog. John, a trainer, took him under his wing and rescued Jaco from his disfunction by properly training him in a loving and consistent way. Joe, who runs things, also trains them and between the two our Jaco was in completely excellent hands. This training establishment cannot be beat, if the dog parents keep up the training you will have a joyful, content and well behaved pup, I really recommend this place HIGHLY and if Jaco's very good I'll bring him back for play dates. In short, we arrived with two healthy dogs and left with two sick dogs! As mentioned in other reviews, Canyon View Ranch seems to be a kennel cough hotspot.   We also witnessed some questionable training methods being implemented by owner/trainer Joe. He used his boot on our dog's leash, very close to her collar, in order to pin her down multiple times as she yelped.  Personally, I would prefer people to use their hands and not their feet when interacting with my extremely docile dog.   When I approached owner/trainer Joe with my concerns, he said that I was comparing the situation to George Floyd having a knee on his back... I think that was tactless and socially insensitive...   All other staff members were top notch and the grounds are incredibly clean. In my book, this should be a starting point and not an accolade. All I want for my dogs is for them to be healthy and happy! I'm sure you want the same if you've taken the time to read this!! Don't be fooled by the pretty landscaping and alpacas! There's nowhere else in Los Angeles that I would board little Joey when I need to go on a trip. The only downer is that the Ranch is two miles up an unpaved road AFTER you've done the couple of miles of winding Topanga Canyon Road. But the place is a marvel, acres upon acres of beautiful nature somewhere between high desert and wooded paradise. Joe is the owner and he's usually there, watching over things. The trainers are the best. Dustin is Joey's trainer and he loves him. The little dogs get a bit of a bad deal, because their enclosure is quite a bit smaller than the big dogs, but it's sufficient, and there is always someone outside with the little dogs, making sure no one gets humped or injured. Joey is a traumatized rescue dog but he adapts very well to the Ranch, and comes home much calmer and more socialized. The little dog enclosure has a tunnel, and two levels, and they give them naps in their cages. Most of the time they run free. If your dog eats special food, they'll take care of it, and also administer medication. The big dogs really get the good deal. The big dog enclosure is huge, with multi leveled play ground, dog pools, hills, runs, landscaping. You can look down on the big dog place from the top where you park, and it's great to see the big boys enjoying themselves. It's a little pricey, $50/day or $80/day if you want training, but it's worth it. You can be sure your dog is being well taken care of. Charlie Sheen brings his dog here, as do many other entertainment types. They will pick your dog up if you want, but I don't like sending Joey off caged in a van, so I always drive him up. My parents had taken many of their dogs to Canyon View Ranch and now that I have my own dog I decided that it would totally be worth it to have her trained. Canyon View Ranch did an amazing job with her! Even though Pugs tends to be very stubborn and hard to train she is now amazing at listening. Her obedience at home and on walks is great. We are now slowly working on her off-leash skills and go back often for additional lessons! I highly recommend this place!! It's a beautiful facility too and the staff is wonderful!! I see people mentioning that CVR has had kennel cough...truthfully most boarding and training facilities get outbreaks. CVR specifically requires the bordetella vaccine every 6 months while others I've seen only require it every year. They actively try to prevent it and when CVR did have a small outbreak they alerted me right away and were able to reschedule another time for my dog to come, which was great. Not only are the facilities impeccable, but the attention provided to each dog from ownership all the way to facilities personnel is fantastic. Our mildly aggressive and socially awkward dog did the 30-day board/train and he was certainly improved after his stint at the Ranch. The personalized trainer was able to build a good rapport with our dog and made him feel comfortable and more open to listening. I am very relieved and excited that I was recommended this place for training, boarding, and grooming for my boxer puppy, Kelso. This site is professional, clean (both oder and the facility itself), and a true delight! Kelso and I visited for a consultation for the 4 week on leashing training. Joe immediately greeted us and listened to my needs for Kelso and he was attentive, friendly, and informative (I mean, the man has been in business for 24 years!) While we walked the premises with the run down of what training would look like, I asked if Kelso could be bathed. Not only did my baby boy look clean, but he was clearly in good hands by how happy he looked. I am sure that Kelso will be cared for by the best of the best. Another thing to note, I know that people may have had different experiences with this site (as seen by the Yelp reviews), but don't be discouraged by them! Took our two dogs here for a short stay and training, and they came back worse than they went. They misled us about the type of training they do, and the specific things we asked them to work on (which they agreed to) they did not do, and instead did generic training that did not help with any of the issues we had. Pick up also took about an hour, and when the owner or manager called to apologize, he promised the lead trainer would call to offer a lesson and help explain what they trained. We never got a call from the trainer, and only got a generic email about a week after they returned. EDIT: I was mistaken, we did actually get a voicemail from the trainer a few days later than we were told to expect it, but at that point had already decided it was not worth continuing as their style of pet training is not what we wanted in the first place, when we called and asked what type they did before boarding. The owner did make an effort to make things right, so I will give them credit that they have attempted to rectify the situation, although not in a way we thought would help us with our dogs in the long run. read more

My son and I bought our golden retriever 'Oliver' to Canyon Ranch years ago. He was so unfriendly as to be practically unlikeable. As a last resort we brought him to Canyon View. We weren't hopeful, but you were. We bought you an apathetic and distant dog who showed no interest in anything and two weeks later you gave us back- Lassie! It makes me tear up when I think of that beautiful, radiant and happy dog who ran to greet us when we got out of the car. He was everything my 12-year old son could have wanted in a 'best friend'. Everyone loved Ollie and everyone wanted to know what we had done to affect such a change in him. You did it, Canyon View, and we could never ever thank you enough. It's like you taught him to to speak dog and human and he was so proud and happy and in-love with life everyday after that until he passed away in 2010. As we were driving away from Canyon Ranch with the best dog in the world in the back seat, I joked to my son- "They've given us the wrong dog but let's not tell them." ...And when we returned to the Ranch for our 'checkup', Oliver couldn't wait to see everyone and showed such excitement at being there and such affection for his trainer and the whole place that it was abundantly clear that his memories of being there were some of the best of his life. My puppy just came home from spending the past 4 weeks at canyon view ranch for an intensive training program. WOW - he's a new dog (in a great way)! Thank you so much to the friendly staff, knowledgable trainers and very dedicated owner Joe (who also wears a trainer hat)! When Coco first arrived to the ranch, he wasn't eating - they tried all the normal tricks but he still didn't eat enough - so they went above and beyond to find something he liked. I always felt that Coco was being well cared for. The training I had with coco was critical - I learned how to communicate with him. Now at home we speak the same language... he sleeps in his crate, relieves himself outside and goes along with the routine of our day. My young children also learned how to communicate with him and they are enjoying him so much more! Joe and his team are like family. We've had two dogs stay with them every time we leave town. It's seriously like spa meets summer camp for dogs. My husband and I had to leave town without much notice for a funeral. Our primary and secondary kennel were full so naturally I panicked and asked friends for recommendations. We came across CVR and I am so grateful. The first green flag was their strict vaccine requirements. Maria at the front desk helped me get my sweet Dracula set up for two nights and alleviated my stress of the trip being three days away. Their dog trainer, Steven, was spending one-on-one time with a pup when we first arrived and I was happy to witness the interaction. Steven loves dogs and was a natural when he came to greet our big (actually giant) boy, another green flag. We took our black lab there for a week and he came out very tired as was to be expected. They were great with him (though I wish they had a webcam). They also followed the instructions to give him ear medication. So all in all we were very happy and will bring him in again. We just got our golden back from CVR's 4 week board and train... and could not be happier! He is a new dog. Our housekeeper believes they gave us someone else's dog back. Our neighbors can't believe their eyes. He no longer pulls on a leash, listens to commands and is all around the good good boy we always knew was inside him. Every trainer and walker told us "board and train programs don't work, call me when he's back". Incorrect!! The program worked. A big thank you to Ciarra and Chris, and every other trainer who helped our boy. They were lovely, helpful and professional. My dog boarded here 4 years ago shortly after I rescued him while he was still a puppy. I left him for a month with Canyon View Ranch while I went to Europe. I was nervous about leaving him here and now I know why. It is quite clear nobody checks the dogs bodies carefully each day before they get put back into their crates as stated on the website. To that end, I wonder what kind of supervision is provided as well. When I picked up my dog, Tony, he had a deep puncture wound on his neck that had to be cleaned out and stitched up by a vet at Overland Vet Clinic. See attached vet notes on day of pickup. He was given antibiotics for several days. She was in shock that this happened at a boarding facility and NOBODY CALLED ME ABOUT IT OR KNEW ABOUT IT! I have had nightmares about knowing that my dog, like my child, was hurt and could have come down with an infection. He also came home to over 5 ticks attached to his head, around the ears, one of which ended up in my bed and on body. DO NOT BOARD YOUR DOG HERE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, PERIOD. The owners did not care and never called me back. I have since found a local dog sitter and it has worked out great so far. Please private message me for their website. I will post photos of my Canyon Ranch itemized bill, my dogs head puncture wound, ticks I collected in a bag off his head and the vet bill incurred on the same day shortly. I cannot review Joe and his staff at Canyon View Ranch more enthusiastically. The care is top-of-the line, the grounds are every dog's dream -- complete with challenge courses, bathing pools and lots of fresh air to play. The staff is professional, bright, attentive and caring -- to owners and dogs. Our dogs absolutely love it there and we love leaving them knowing they are in the most capable hands one could possibly wish for. I would like to give you an update that we have been reimbursed in full for our dogs stay and medical bills to date, however not without several emotionally charged, haughty emails and voicemails from both the owners. These emails and voicemails were highly inappropriate given we were already upset with the severe illness of our dogs and they flip flopped a couple of times in their decision to reimburse us as they were upset I had posted on Yelp about our experience. In the end they did do the right thing, yet it was very upsetting to be a recipient of their hostile reactions. Honestly, I could not even respond to their last emails and voicemails. One of the email responses they wrote back was in paragraphs written in angry red letters. Yet they said my emails were 'snotty' (they were not, rather factual) and that our dog probably looked unhappy, in a photo they sent "because we raised it from a puppy and that we were mean people and they never want to hear from us again." Honestly, we had a wonderful tour experience there with all the staff when we first went to inspect their property on June 20th. We had pleasant interactions with everyone including the other couple we toured the facility with. Sincerely, these guys exaggerate, dramatize and don't tell the truth. The tone in which they spoke to me was inappropriate and filled me with additional anxiety on top of stress dealing with my dogs illness. While the facility is beautiful, I have come to learn they continue to operate under an expired permit that is for only 30 dogs. Apparently at any given time they have upwards of 100+ dogs there. If this is accurate information, this could be a major reason why they seem to have a consistent problem with Kennel Cough and parasites at their facility as it is too difficult to keep everything sterilized with so many dogs and not enough staff. I even heard from one vet that a dog died there last year. In the end, while we have been reimbursed, I could never recommend this facility for the safety of our dogs would always be in question. I hope the upcoming hearing regarding their expired permit on Aug 26th will result in them having to adhere to the permit allowances should it be renewed and that this will be a wake up call to them to inform dog owners immediately if there is a case of kennel cough at their facility, giving owners the opportunity to not check their dogs in, or to retrieve them. A HOME AWAY FROM HOME & THE BEST TRAINER I'm a mom of two dogs, Australian Shepherd (7) and Weimaraner (3) and I have been going to Canyon View Ranch for several years, even before I had my Weimaraner. It started with bringing my Aussie to the ranch as a vacation home since I was traveling a lot for work, and eventually it became a home away from home for both of my dogs. Their facilities are great, they are extremely sensitive to your pets needs and always treat them like family. One thing I'd like to note is that TYLER (head trainer) is an absolute gem and one of the best trainers ever. Period. Tyler has not only helped my Australian Shepherd become more social and comfortable in groups, he also gave so much care to my Weimaraner and helped him become a fantastic listener and gentle dog. My Weimaraner was very energetic and a bit rambunctious, however Tyler was able to help me become a better communicator which granted me the ability to have an even better relationship with my dog. After the 4 week training program with several one on one lessons, my Weimaraner transformed into the most gentle and best friend ever, and I was able to effectively work with him. we went for our free evaluation and tour, they really sold us on the phone. we seen multiple dogs in a cement area behind the building. we then were escorted to where the big dogs play and seen they had less dogs in a bigger space. this made no sense to us. when they took are dog he was very reluctant to enter the gates and the trainer pulled him forcibly through. I don't know if she has been doing this a while but it was hard to watch. my husband was livid once we left. I do not recommend this place at all. read more

We love Canyon View Ranch! Our dog Kate, loves Canyon View Ranch too! We could not be happier!!! We've tried several places and nothing compares to the loving attention that they give. First of all, the property is the finest. Nothing compares. It is like a Disneyland for dogs! When you go to visit the property, you instantly feel happiness and joy. It is a breath of fresh air with a large property where dogs can play and discover and meet new friends. They have pools for dogs, tunnels, grassy hills...a pure heaven for dogs and kept very clean! We've tried other places and nothing has this type of outdoor playtime area. Also, they pick up and deliver in air conditioned vans! Who can beat that? Our Kate is always happy when she comes home. We never see any signs of distress. The best part too is that they offer training and Kate has learned how to beautifully socialize with other dogs, so when we take her to our favorite dog park, she has the best time, and she knows to listen to us when we call her. Their training is incredible. Overall, if you have to board your dog, you have to try Canyon View Ranch! If not, you and your dog are missing out on a wonderful experience. read more

Nice people run this place but that's not what it's about. Both of my dogs suffered severe injury while boarding here on separate occasions. My sweet, docile boy was attacked by some of the other dogs and needed stitches to his head. Responsible thing for me to do would have been to stop boarding there immediately following this incident but we had been patronizing Canyon View for a while at this point and I chalked it up to "sometimes these things happen." Poor reckoning on my part. The next time was even worse, as a little puppy my girl was inexplicably let out with the big dogs without me being consulted about it and was subsequently even more viciously attacked - tooth knocked out, ruptured gland in her neck, puncture wounds in ears and neck. They called me right away, I rushed over to get her out of there, my poor baby was literally shaking in pain and frozen with shock. It took a lot of nurturing to get her back to normal and in fact I don't believe she ever fully recovered emotionally. It can only be logically concluded that poor supervision resulted in these vicious attacks on both of my dogs. Less important but still very annoying is of course the medical bills were all mine to pay. While the amenities there are enticing to us humans and I'm hesitant to make a negative impact on a small business run by who I considered to be nice people, I am first and foremost a dog lover and the negligence at Canyon View Ranch when it came to my precious babies makes it imperative that I share the details of these horrible past experiences. read more
