an old covered wagon
Suzann S.

Another dinning adventure.. this time across the state line in Wyoming... it was off a four mile gravel road (ok snow was on top of it) but, so worth the drive to be impressed with award winning Chef Judy and her husband Frank who are the owners... The ribeye steaks were hand cut to order and grilled to perfection accompanied by real mashed potatoes, baby carrots and garlic bread... and oh my the desserts were scrumptious.. chocolate cake with cream on top and homemade vanilla ice cream with bits of chocolate and caramel truly delicious... Full bar with local beer on tap and a good selection on the wine list.... Everything was homemade with passion and love... Come on in sit a spell and enjoy fantastic food, drink and conversation with the owners... the chuck wagon in the center of the restaurant that Frank built is the one that Judy uses when competing in Chuck Wagon competitions.. You never know what hidden gems will be found by taking roads less traveled....

The owner made these tables.

My third visit. This place is a solid ten stars. Friendly owners and fantastic food. The chef comes up with fantastic side dishes. Call ahead to make sure they are open. They also do catering.

I'll try again later but the best it'll get is a 4 star, and that's if they do really good. Don't ignore your customers, I went to Isabella's and had a great dinner with a burger you have to beat. Followup: I went back the following night and was sorely disappointed. From the time I sat down to when my order was finally taken and I could get a beverage was 28 minutes. Food arrived another 30 minutes later after I watched a gentleman who was seated at a table after me, was finished paying for his meal. Nobody in this town knows me, I didn't come here with an axe to grind, and quite frankly I felt ignored. I won't be back here, ever, and I'm making it a point to tell people to avoid this place. At this point it feels like a personal insult. If management sees this: have a nice life. I left a $0.01 tip.

A couple of waiters and waitresses were up front talking to a couple but didn't say a word to me or my son. No signs saying wait to be seated so we found a table and sat down. 3-4 mins went by and we were passed by at least 3 waiters but still nothing. Told my son to set a timer for 5 mins. Well the 5 mins was up and no one ever even acknowledged we were there so we got up and left. Won't ever try them again or even go to the attached lodge.

The bruschetta was amazing. The salmon was tasty and the Rib eye was cooked perfectly. Heidi offered great service and was very attentive. Last but definitely not least Lorenzo the bar tender made one of the absolutely best old fashions we've ever tasted. We liked it so much we reserve another table to return later on in the week. If you like a place with history great food that is about quality and not quantity and amazing drinks this is a must stop while visiting Hill City.

Place is cleaned and nicely decorated (renovated historic building) but this year the food really stepped up. We were a table of 4 and everybody was so happy with their order. I must say this is probably the best steak I had since I live in the US. It was cooked, seasoned to perfection. The meat was the best quality (locally sourced), the accompaniments, sides and sauce were on point, and my place was nicely dressed. It was a delight (huge plus for the green beans...not sure how they were seasoned but I still dream of that side!). My friend's Elk medallion was to die for. Highly recommended.

The ambiance in this place is so gorgeous. Okay so the important part is the good!! I ordered the wedge salad with their green goddess dressing. It was THE BEST I HAVE EVER EATEN. I ordered the lobster tail with augrotten potatoes First the potatoes could use some seasoning but they were good not over cooked or anything. I always confuse gotten with scalloped. I thought it was the same but I guess they aren't. These were good. The star is the lobster tail. It was nice size larger than the 6-8 ounces. Cooked perfectly seasoned perfectly. Tasted divine in hot clarified butter. It also was served with green beans which I really don't like but these were very good The house white wine was delicious and the server was great. My husband order the shrimp breaded with a baked potato and garden salad with French dressing. The shrimp were hand breaded in panko not a lot of breading but enough to give a nice crunch. I was looking for ward to breakfast here but we didn't try it this trip. He also drank a draft beer and said it was good. The service was excellent. The waiter was kind CLEAN AND ATTENTIVE The decor is gorgeous and historic but pleasing to the eye. The restaurant was spotless clean. They served fresh hot sourdough bread on the table and I would drive the 6 hours just for that. I can't wait to go back
