The hotel was hosting a wedding so the lobby was completely full and busy; however, the front desk clerk was still very pleasant and even gave me a room away from the large wedding party so that I would be minimally disturbed. Room is wonderful. Updated. Extremely clean, my UV wand picked up nothing on the bed. Vinyl flooring is always plus especially for those with allergies. Will certainly stay again!

First, let me say this. "Hotel" is more like "Bed and Breakfast" in this instance. There are about 8 rooms at the Armadillo, all with a unique charm. If you don't want a place where you will regularly interact with strangers, this may not be the place for you. Next, the owner Denise is a hoot. She painted the art on the building, and is so funny. When you call The Armadillo you seemingly get her cell, and she is chatty in the best ways. When I called she stated that the weekend I was going to be there was, coincidentally, the first weekend that they would be open as The Armadillo, and they were going to remain at 25% capacity due to COVID. I needed a spot to stay in to visit family during 4th of July weekend, so I snagged it quickly. She informed me that it was $125 a night, but if I paid cash I could pay $100 a night (COVID deal, she said). That rate is standard for the area. When you get here - DON'T PAY TO PARK AT 1ST MONDAY. you can't reach it from that parking lot (generally speaking). What you want to do is drive down 17 to the backside of the mountain and you can park there. From here, walking to "The Mountain" is doable. I did it 4 times no problem. The room was clean, but certainly lacked many creature comforts. The first night I met the other couple in our hotel while we were at the Stage on the Mountain and she said that if you look around the place you can find a fan somewhere. In the summer you need it, especially in an upstairs room because the AC isn't strong strong. It's central upstairs, and window units downstairs. Also, they don't have any TVs at all. The aesthetic is Wild West downtown outside. Denise owns many of these and the innkeepers, Stewart and Sonja (Delightfully chatty folks) showed me the Hummingbird ($140 a night and GREAT A/C), and told me about her other property, "Cadillac Ranch" (Soon to open). At 8 each night there is a small stage at the Mountain (a short walk) that holds free concerts (seats about 12-15 people) and you can bring your drinks. Forget your drinks? Follow the Daqauri' s To-Go signs and they have some great ones you can walk back with. I had a great experience here, and would suggest it to anyone looking for a unique experience, if you don't mind the lack of creature comforts that come with the charm.

Subdued, tasteful, mostly utilitarian decorating instead of overload you see in some cabins or B&Bs. Hosts literally thought of EVERYTHING you might need, name it. An extremely well-stocked kitchen & bathroom & shockingly generous supply of edibles/drinkables/goodies. We used the chiminea (fat sticks easily gleaned from yard to feed it) & also the little grill, nice. Enjoyed the whimsical yard art, again, liked their tastes. There was even a bottle tree outside to trap bad spirits, must be doing its job, lol. Reception for Wi-Fi and cell good. There were CDs & DVDs & a player but the TV also had cable, so 7 channels, I think, hope you like old Westerns & Forensic Files reruns, we did. Of the few DVDS they had, one was an older fave of ours, The Good Girl, so great to see again. Was cool, rainy weekend so we didn't walk afield, maybe next time but then next time might order up another rainy weekend, works for us. A few times we heard a braying donkey neighbor some distance, didn't bother us, made up for not hearing or seeing much of the wildlife other reviewers talked about. Did see birds, squirrels and an armadillo. When I say hosts thought of everything, I mean it, no, really, you'll find every single little thing you'd ever need, plus books to read (finished one from home and left it & a magazine for the stack) & cabin had a binder of instructions about anything & everything inside the place (check it out, we found lots of crucial info in there) plus a roundup of local things to do, nice mentions of the very fine Caldwell Zoo & the Tyler State Park. We welcomed guidance on how to start shower (pull ring down from faucet, aha!). If I had to say anything remotely negative it's that the steep stairs challenged me as I'm recovering from an injury. But the bed at the top made up for it. What else. Well, it was just nearly too perfect & afraid we might have trouble booking it during later, finer weather. We'd gone there for the singer-songwriter series, this one for the insanely talented Jeff Black who performed at the Old Firehouse. We had to skip out of the performance halfway through & head home early, ever-on-call husband had sudden work obligation pop up so we didn't get all the good out of Edom, our cabin & the concert, but we still left happy. Five stars for everything including perfect, honest descriptions on the website. Helped me find exactly what I was looking for. Full kitchen and nice A/C. Updated bathroom with nice shower. There is a TV with digital broadcast and a dvd player. New where it needs to be and antique where it should be. Our stay was serene amongst old farm buildings, a creek, small ponds and lots of wildlife. Nearest neighbors are acres away including a local cop (we heard) and a couple of farmers. Mineola is about 10 minutes away and filled our weekend with restaurants and small town shopping. We also hit Winnsboro, TX about 30 minutes away to view some of our old family's residences from back in the day. Being in the event business, I could appreciate how the proprietor took one of the large barns and turned it into an open air special event facility with lighting, small stage, bar, picnic area and a clean smooth new floor for catering, weddings, concerts and reunions. If I lived in that area, I would use the heck out of it. The coordinator or the guest of honor and family could stay on site in the cottage while the rest of the party could stay in town at the ever expanding group of hotels. I think it would be cool to tent camp with some other couples out here with the cottage as home base. (haven't asked the owner yet.)

There is ample parking for fishing boats. The new owner, Deborah Mushock, has turned this place around. She is an artist and used her talents to make the rooms comfy and clean. Each of the 8 rooms is named after a fish found in Lake Fork. Each room has a small refrigerator and microwave. There is a pavilion for the motel rooms that has picnic tables and grills. In addition to the 8 individual rooms, there is a two bedroom lodge with a large patio. The lodge is tastefully decorated too. There are one of a kind artwork pieces hanging on the walls. The owner lives on the property and is available to answer questions about the area and help if there are any issues. This little gem is close to both Sulfer Springs and Quitman. Both unique and charming small towns. It is close to a public boat ramp on Lake Fork.
