Canton House was one of my favorite Cantonese restaurants in Gothenburg. I say "was" because I just went there tonight and afterwards I had to do some serious re-ranking! Make no mistake, Canton House is still good but definitely not as good as I have known it to be. Perhaps this is just a one time thing but it's serious enough for me to give it some thought.
In our party of six, we ordered eight dishes and none of them really stood out. I have eaten all these dishes before except for one (beef noodles). What did stand out was how salty they all were. We ordered Peking duck, spicy prawns, crispy tofu, pork belly, sweet and sour ribs, beef noodles, and two other dishes that used to be on the menu but have since been taken off.
The Peking duck is no more home made, or even if it is, it's seriously lacking. It's just dry and hard. Last time I came here (about a year ago), it was soft, succulent and crispy (and home made!). This time round, I am willing to bet, it was store-bought and reheated in the oven.
The only two dishes worth mentioning were the prawns and tofu.
Overall, I would down rate this restaurant to a three star because it seriously disappointed me today and the sad part is that I have always raves about this restaurant in front of my friends.
Something else worth mentioning is that the portions are a bit small and the dishes are quite expensive. Our total bill came up to 1,500 SEK for 6 people.
After this visit I am a bit reluctant to come back here anytime soon. But, on the plus side, my quest for a new favorite Cantonese restaurant has begun. read more
