I ordered medium spice...they forgot the spice. The rice was dry and had no taste at all. The egg roll was pretty good, it did have shrimp in it, if you don't like shrimp I would suggest not getting it. Maybe it was just an off day, maybe I'll be back and try something else. Was double charged on two separate cards after being told the machine wasn't working for the first transactions. showed the owner the duplicate charges and i asked for a refund of one of the charges. Instead of refunding my $13.50 in over charges, I was told to come back another day so they could show me their bank account as proof I wasn't charged twice (despite me showing them where it posted twice to two separate accounts). called my bank who told them the charges posted and instead of refunding my money, they disputed my refund by saying "if a receipt didn't print out" then I wasn't charged---despite showing them. For "fast food" Chinese, I am very impressed. Their food is fast, however, their food is also fresh. It's not overly oily, the veggies are freshly steamed, and the prices are also good too! There's not much of a dine-in area, so please make sure you order out. read more

Overall food was decent, staff was friendly and efficient. Carry out service only. Szechuan Chicken was ordered non-spicy with white rice. Ample vegetables, with a standard Chinese brown sauce. Hunan beef ordered non-spicy with white rice came with carrots and onions with a standard brown sauce. I would imagine if you ordered with spice, as Szechuan is meant for, that the flavor profiles would be more pronounced. Like many take out Chinese spots, I felt as though there was an excess of sauce, however it was not overly salty. Note, that the size you order will impact the price, so make sure to double check before placing your order. I believe many of the pricing concerns listed in other reviews may be due to ordering a combo which the restaurant adds to your order by default. This can be avoided by ordering ala cart either pint size or quart size. I found the Pint size was more than adequate for a single dinner size portion. Accepted forms of payment: cash is preferred, but cards are accepted. I was asked if I could pay cash, as I did not have cash available, I paid with credit card. While waiting for my food, I also noted, that a patron calling in an order, was also asked if they were able to pay cash. I believe this is their standard, as they likely prefer cash payment, to avoid credit card fees. For two main dishes, with combination, the price would have been $32. However, we specifically chose to order pint size, which came out to $16 and some change. Overall, we had a good experience, the food was decent as I stated above, service was efficient and friendly, and credit card payment was excepted. I will be returning to try more dishes, and next time, I will ask for less sauce, and try to bring cash. -- Update: second trip back, this time for Mongolian beef and Szechuan chicken. Similar quality. Service was very good. While it's not 4 stars, it is a solid 3 star place based on my experience. Their website looks like it has not been updated in a long time and prices seem to fluctuate depending on what online menu source you are looking at. The most accurate prices are going to be on the menu in store itself or on the paper carry out menu. In my opinion, ordering by pint is the way to go. read more

It pains me to write this review, because the lady who was working the front counter was extremely friendly, but the food was awful. This was our first time ordering from here because it smelled good from the outside, but unfortunately the reviews of subpar food were accurate. The wonton soup was watery and not flavorful, and the Szechuan chicken which I had ordered with medium spice had no spice to it at all and was completely bland. Unfortunately, it seems like the east side below I-696 has next to no strong options for Chinese food; driving half an hour to have to find some is a real annoyance. read more

Very good, clean and the best Chinese. They used to own a place on Fraser and Gratiot and now we come here to this location. We've been eating their food for the past 30 years, and we recommend the almond , orange, and sesame chicken along with the pepper steak! I have carried out from Canton Express a couple dozen time over the last 13 years or so. It used to rival my favorite Chinese sit-down restaurants. For me, Chinese is an every three or four month treat. I carried out a couple of months ago and noticed that the lady who used to wait one me, presumably the owner, was not there... she had always been there in the past. I was rather surprised and disappointed. The food for a dozen + years was excellent, and this meal was just not very good; bland in fact. I just carried out from them again. After a dozen years, I can accept an off-night. Unfortunately, tonight was as bad or worse, than the last time. Even the Egg Drop Soup was thin and flavorless. The entree was as well. When I picked up my order tonight,I asked if they have changed hands, but the lady said no , she was filling in for her sister. Ive been going to the place for over 10 years. It has been owned by the same family and I can't believe how consistent they are with their food. They know our name and ask how we are. We like getting sesame chicken, sweet and sour pork, and egg foo young. Sometimes the wait is a little long, I've had a 30 minute wait on a weekend, but it is always worth it. Basically it's carryout with only 3 tables. The food is really really good old skool Chinese. I ordered the Almond Chicken combo which includes fried rice and a egg roll, and a pint of S/S pork. Yummy. The only drawback is the egg roll, no one seems to make a good one these days. A/C was 2 huge chicken breasts with gravy, and the ss pork was the kind with the red ss sauce. Fried rice was a bit bland but it perked up with some soy sauce. People please do not use the packets of soy sauce or any soy sauce that contains anything hydrolyzed, look it up and you'll see why, ok I'm done ranting here. LOL read more

Wonderful little restaurant that delivers reliable food every time. It is one of the only Chinese places near me that never aggravate my soy and wheat allergy. They also have a nice big menu, though I have yet to try it all. Probably the only dpownside is that the location is small and family run so its quality over speed. Canton Express is the first Chinese take-out place I've had after moving to St. Clair Shores 7 years ago. I'll have to admit, it was not what I am normally used to, having lived on the west coast most my life (Hawaii). A lot of it's appeal for me is 1) familiarity and 2) the location is minutes from my home. 3) It is my go-to place if I'm too lazy to cook. The woman who is a permanent fixture behind the counter is always friendly to me, unlike the other reviews I've read. She engages in conversation and is efficient in her constant busyness. This restaurant is popular for take out, so ordering in advance is suggested. Dining in is an option; they have 6 tables available, but I've never seen anyone eat at one of them. Food tastes fresh, and they ask how spicy you want your dish in advanced. The only times I've been disappointed in what I've eaten there was their egg rolls and once I had a dish that tasted overly salted. (a one time experience) I secretly wish I could ask them if they could just make me what they had for lunch or dinner. instead of the standard Chinese take out offerings, but that's just a fantasy and I never ask. Overall it's your typical Chinese take-out fare. I've worked my way around tasting different things on the menu and stick to the same things. In addition to the pork (char siu) with vegetables, we often order sweet and sour pork. I'm not a fan of sweet and sour, but my mother in law always orders it. I've tasted the breaded pork, it's freshly fried, not soggy. They put that dish in the to-go container with the sauce and vegetables separated from the fried pork to prevent from getting soggy. All the meats in the dishes I've tried are tender; the stir fried vegetables still hold some crunch. Funny enough, I order the Pad Thai from this Chinese restaurant. I don't know if it's on their on-line menu, but there's a sign on the counter that advertises it. Ok just be warned: it's not exactly pad thai; the noodles are more of a chow fun noodle than a pad thai noodle, but I often order it. I love noodles and since it's made to order (so it will take longer to make than the other dishes) I feel it's the freshest thing on their menu. Again, you decide on the heat level The tamarind and fish sauce flavor isn't as prominent as it should, but it comes with the garnishes that typically come with pad thai (fresh bean sprouts, chopped nuts, lime) and the chicken (or shrimp) is cooked well and there is a lot of it. My rating is actually a 3.5 but I gave a 4 for always being there whenever I needed a break from cooking. read more
