She knows what she's doing. However, she only comes into her Manhattan office one day of the week; Thursdays. More importantly, unless you pay her $125 per 1/2 hr visit (rate as of 2011 and $250 initial consultation fee), expect to be short-changed. I left Dr. B when she increased my 1/2 hr session from $75 to $95/hr. She reminded me that since I was a long time client, I was still receiving a discounted rate from the new client rate. The problem is that even at the $75 rate, she stopped providing ultra-sound and massage therapy and only provided heat packs. Then, she would rush to get me out the door after only 15 minutes of treatment. 5 minutes to change out of street clothes into a gown, 12-15 minutes of heat pack, 5 minutes of adjustment and then she leaves so I'm getting dressed at 1:20pm. I was so turned off that I left and found another chiropractor, Dr. Marc Bobrowsky, who specializes in Applied Kinesiology and worked from home for $50 per 1/2 hr visit. He gives you a full 1/2 hr of treatment and his methods helped now and then. Dr. B, did provide ultrasound when she had an assistant, Nneka but she would sometimes come in and take over for Nneka and proceed to end the ultrasound prematurely by turning the timer dial down (you can hear it, Dr. B!) so I was short-changed from the usual 5 minutes. Also, she pushed these Chinese herbal patches which didn't do a thing for me. All they did was leave residue on my skin for several days. She told me there's a money-back guarantee from the maker so I contacted them and they told me to get a refund from the person who sold it. From above, no matter how good she is, you get an idea of how sneaky she can be. Just be aware that you may not get the full treatment if there's any discount, promotion or special offers from the normal $125/visit. Make sure you ask upfront about what the session includes and for how long. Don't forget to listen to that ultrasound dial to get the full 5 minutes.

The receptionist was rude to me as soon as I walked in, interrogating me about why my paperwork wasn't filled out (no one had ever sent me any paperwork to fill out). Then I waited for about 30 minutes to see the doctor -- who turned out to be a DIFFERENT doctor, not Butera, because apparently Butera was out of town for the whole month, though no one had bothered to mention that to me before I came in. As I was sitting in the waiting room, the receptionist and the doctor who WAS in that day (Moskowitz?) were audibly discussing the frustration of dealing with annoying clients -- the receptionist kept sighing and complaining about the clients she'd been talking to on the phone. As Moskowitz was leading me into the exam room, she stopped to ask the receptionist to go out and buy some donuts for them. Mid-afternoon snack time, obvs! Then they discussed exactly what kind of donuts they should buy for a few awkward minutes as I hovered there, not sure what to do. (We hadn't entered the exam room yet; we were standing right outside it). When we got into the room, things continued to go south. It took Moskowitz at least 20-30 minutes to read over the forms I'd filled out in the waiting room. She asked me inappropriate questions about being single without children, and she laughed when I told her I wasn't pregnant (why that's funny, I have no idea). Then she stepped out of the room to help another patient get set up, leaving me in the room with nothing to do for about 10-15 minutes before any type of treatment had been started. Finally she came back and began the actual treatments, which were fine, except that I was inadvertently flashing her because the gown she'd given me to wear kept opening up -- the velcro had worn off the closures. (Time to invest in some new gowns, please!) All in all, I was in their office for almost 2 hours for what I'd assumed would be a simple chiropractic adjustment (I thought I'd be there for an hour, max). Plus, most of that time was spent waiting around while the doctor and receptionist gabbed about irrelevant stuff. (They continued to gab behind the desk while I was checking out.) I have been suffering from severe lower back pain on and off for several years now and it's…read moresomething that I thought would never go away. I've been to many chiropractors and they have always helped me to feel better, but like clockwork, the pain comes back and worse than the time before. This was by far the worst pain I've experienced! I couldn't sit or stand without assistance and walking was not tolerable because the pain was so excruciating. After an unsuccessful acupuncture appointment earlier in the day - side bar - I tried acupuncture in hopes that would help since nothing else was working... I was promised that I'd be dancing out of their office... I left in worse shape, but I'll leave that story for their review. Anyways, barely able to walk, I scoured the Internet looking for a chiropractor that could take me that same day because there was no way I could possibly get through the day in the shape I was in. Most of them were either closed, fully booked, or didn't have enough reviews to give me peace of mind. Finally, I came across this gem of a place! I called and they were able to take me, hallelujah! I was dreading getting in a car because the pain was so bad and I knew it would take me 20 minutes just to get in and out, but my God got me and I was assigned a Mercedes Benz Metris, which is basically a luxury van. I was able to slide right in and out - still painful, but easier than trying to get into a sedan. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Dr. Shtarkman and he helped me get checked in. I couldn't sit so I filled out everything standing up, which was so uncomfortable, but I was seen right away. He took some x-rays, asked me questions and then we went to one of the exam rooms. Although I was in pain, Dr. Shtarkman made me laugh and I felt very comfortable the entire time. By the end of the visit, I walked out of the office with zero tears... still in a bit of pain, but much more bearable than when I came in! It's 5 sessions later and I am elated!!!! I cannot recommend this place enough. They have me on a treatment plan that I KNOW is working; I feel a little bit better after every session. They even introduced acupuncture to my plan (Javier is awesome! Everything from his bedside manner to educating me in the art has been wonderful). My husband also suffers from back pain so I brought him here as well and he's just as happy as I am! I plan on bringing my mom and sister for wellness checks just so they can experience how amazing this facility is. I probably should've mentioned this earlier, but the reception staff and all the girls are so amazing! They're friendly and very efficient so you're never kept waiting for too long after you check in.
