One of the most ancient burial grounds in the city, at the bottom of the Royal Mile, Canongate Cemetery is a site rich in history. Dating from 1688, a number of celebrated Edinburgh personages, such as Thomas Carlyle, Robert Fergusson and Adam Smith, reside beneath the ground here, while there are also many unmarked graves.
By night, it has a creepy, otherworldly feel to it, making it a favoured destination for the city's many ghost tour guides, who bring crowds of wide-eyed tourists here and evoke sinister tales of blood-curdling murders and ominous apparitions. read more
