There is old stone masonry and while some may think it has a creepy vibe I find it quite peaceful. It rains a lot in Scotland and there is a crazy amount of green, despite the rain it seems to be well maintained with nothing too overgrown. Some interesting things to call out: -There is the only Civil War monument outside of the Us here, it's dedicated to the Scottish soldiers that died during WW2 and there is a giant statue of Abraham Lincoln on top. -There is a giant obelisk dedicated to political martyrs who championed reform during the French Revolution. It's right at the beginning of the graveyard and easy to see from long distances away. -Toward the back the walls are low and the graveyard is surrounded by modern apartments and condos. It's a nice place for photography and feels a bit surreal. -Carved tombstones and crypts have great stonework though some have fallen apart or been vandalized over time. There are a lot of skulls and I think the meaning is more "memento mori" than something dark.

The one you see today is not the original placement from the 14th century. It was rebuilt on top of a new base using parts from the original structure in 1885. The emblems and unicorn topper have been restored and painted over the years. It's still a historic monument with lots of stories to tell. There's a doorway into a chamber with a stairway that leads to the platform. This is where the Lord Lyon King of Arms makes official announcements. The most recent one was to announce the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of King Charles III. There's a BBC video online that documents the royal proclamation. It's one of many sights that can be seen in and around Old Town. It was a brutal way of life back in medieval times. There are many walking tours that give more incite into the good and not so good events that happened here. It's a must visit no matter how you choose to explore it.

The historic landmark stands outside St Giles' Cathedral, at the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mercat crosses ('Market', in Scots) were built in towns and villages originally as sites for regular markets where merchants could trade. They also acted as a place where people would gather to hear important public announcements, such as royal and parliamentary proclamations, a practice that continues to this day. Today, the Mercat Cross in Edinburgh is still used to announce the calling of a general election, along with notable royal proclamations.

His name was Kevin Buckley and from my first contact with him on the telephone until after the funeral he was the nicest most professional person I have ever come across in my entire life. He has a natural caring manner and made myself and my family feel at ease and he looked after us so well. He treated my late mum with the utmost of respect when she was in his branch when we came to see her for the last time and I will never forget what he did for us. He is a credit to this company and I thoroughly recommend anyone who has lost someone to contact him and he will look after them so well. The staff at the funeral were excellent too and gave my mum the send off she deserved. Thank you Scotmid and in particular Kevin!

The man who was helping us was very rude and he seemed very bored and had no empathy towards us. At the service of the funeral, we had requested music to play during the committal - though no music was played as they had forgotten to play the music that we had ask them to. Other than that the service was lovely. When me and my Mum went to pick up my Father's ashes, my Mum politely told the women what we were in for. As my mum was telling the women my fathers name - she interrupted and said "All I need is the reference number." It was so unbelievably rude and really hurtful. I wouldn't recommend William Purves Oakville Funeral Home to anybody, and I certainly will not be returning.

My 4 stars are for…read morethe historical value of this cemetery and as a history student, I do find this cemetery pretty interesting. Last year I studied the way that the body has be perceived throughout the years and death was a central theme. Looking at the tombstones within the cemetery and the messages on them really gives a flavour of how people perceived death, and the causes of death also helps us to understand the history of the area in general- the cemetery only exists because of a cholera outbreak in the 1830s making the rest of the cities cemeteries full. Dalry cemetery is no longer in use for current burials, but is still open for people to have a look around and look at the tombstones and architecture within it. Within the cemetery you will find that the paths have got names and I couldn't help but laugh when I found one of them was called "Coffin Lane". The cemetery is also the reason why the local pub Athletic Arms is affectionately known by all the locals as "Diggers".

So, it's a tunnel…read more But, it's a pretty cool tunnel. The first time I came across it I had two thoughts: - Just how had I missed it before. - How unique it is; so wide, so tall, so long. I wish the tunnel had far more artwork but unfortunately this only extends to one really awesome creation. - The rest is just graffiti scrawls. I love cycling through here, and catching sight of the little hidden work of art within the city never fails to make me smile. Bonus Yelp points: the tunnel is lit at night.

I thought it would better & easier to just have this thing printed right there in Scotland. I made the right choice. Mr. Jon Huffer was there every step of the way to answer all my questions, especially about the differences in European paper sizes! :-O He even managed to answer a question I had when he wasn't even in the office! It's a fascinating peaceful place to take a stroll. I love it. I think it's my favourite after Dean Cemetery.

Umm, I feel kind of strange and morbid reviewing a cemetery, so I'd better make one thing clear…read morefrom the start: I'm not reviewing it as a potential final resting place, or suggesting you invest in a plot here. I just think it's quite a nice place to take a walk on a sunny day, just like taking a walk in the park, except that, obviously, it's full of dead people. In my opinion, that actually makes a walk more interesting. Just from a social history point of view, it can be fascinating to study what's written on the grave stones, and sometimes you can reconstruct family sagas stretching across multiple generations from the information contained there. Poignant and tragic events, such as the loss of a child or the first world war, can be gleaned from the terse inscriptions, while the variety of monuments, from simple plinths to elaborate phallic edifices, tell a story of social status and the ostentatious expression of wealth. Even though this graveyard isn't particularly ancient, there's sill a lot of history contained here. Beware though - the gates are locked in the early evening, and I'm not sure that it would be much fun to get shut in and be forced to spend an evening with the ghosts and ghoulies.
