It's the perfect place to go after arriving in Edinburgh and settling in at your hotel. We decided to visit after an early dinner. It's in a great location near Grassmarket Square and Mary's Milk Bar. Just cross over King's Stables Road on your way towards Fountainbridge and you'll see the Vennel steps to the left that will lead you up to the platform. The viewpoint is just in front of the tower where the fragmented medieval walls of the city intersect each other. The view of the castle on the rock is even better in person than it is in pictures. You'll get a great view of Half Moon Battery from this side of the castle, and even the cannons if you zoom in further.
I've read that the best time of day to see it is at sunrise. Although, I think it would also be beautiful at night when the castle is lit up as well as the lamps along the steps. As far as the time of year, I'd have to say that it all depends on how full the trees are up there. We visited in November when the colorful autumn leaves were falling. Perhaps springtime would also be a good time.
You'll also see a pathway if you walk up a little further. This is where you'll see the intersection of the Flodden and Telfer Walls. It was so cool to see the arrow slits in the wall. There is also a window in the Flodden Wall that has since been bricked up. I have no idea what it was used for. All it says is that it was the "sanction of the town council, 1876." Once passing this window, the Vennel path will lead you to Heriot Place that takes you to George Heriot's School (rumored to be an inspiration of the 4 houses of Hogwarts). We didn't get to venture that far, but I wish we had. It's such a pretty pathway.
It's a must visit viewpoint in my opinion. It's typically less crowded than other places. It was quiet for a little while until more tourists arrived. Some were getting annoyed at the people lingering in front of the view. Don't linger! Take your photos and be done with it so others can get their turn. Have your meet up conversations in the less optimal spots. It's no longer a secret place, but still worth the steps to see it. read more
