It's been two year, and the University Barber Shop is still a great place to go for a haircut. It's…read morea lot busier than it was two years ago, which I would say is a testament to the thought and care put into their customer's hair. Walk-in days are very busy, and you will get whichever barber is free at the time. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how familiar you are with this place. It's great in that you get to potentially try out different barbers each time and see who does your hair best (Record their names. Request an hair appointment with a barber that did a great job with your hair for future visits). This was particularly helpful for me, because from what I've hear, Asian hair can be quite a bit harder to cut/style than other hairs (I think my stylist back at home mentioned something about thickness). While I've mostly had good haircuts at this place, there was this one time that I had a barber who was making incorrect assumptions about what I wanted to do with my hair (to be fair, I'm good at communicating for most things, but I tend to mess up big time when it comes to explaining how I like my hair), and I emerged distraught and disappointed at "what had become of me". They share the same space as Kabro Salon (it's part of the same service, but offers styling services) and they occasionally send people over there if it gets really busy at the barber shop. I was one of the lucky few that got the free "upgrade" and it was great. I'll elaborate on my experience there further in a separate review as they are the same company, but their salon is arguably a different service. UBS has some awesome barbers, and some that don't quite work for me. Feel this place out and the barber that cuts to your satisfaction, and you'll walk out there with a good haircut that doesn't break the bank.

Not a great place, but so close to the university I see why people go there. I've gotten multiple…read morehaircuts there in the past, and while the cuts have rarely been anything above acceptable, they were fine enough to keep going back. It's difficult to ever get cut with the same person (if you find a good barber) because they rotate different barbers through from time to time. Finally found one that I liked, but he moved to a different location (Cambie). But I won't be back after today's debacle: Got a pretty terrible haircut (the barber cut my sideburn in half on one side, shaving off most of my natural hairline and leaving me with a strip of a sideburn), and even left portions of uncut hair behind my ears. I asked to have the owner try to fix the mistakes, but when I went back, the owner (who was really friendly) didn't acknowledge that the haircut was a problem, and only did a few quick buzzes before announcing "there!" Only problem is, despite both sides now matching, I still have just a really bizarre and crappy $30 haircut.

I recently had a great experience at this little barbershop after moving into the neighbourhood. I…read morecame in on a Saturday afternoon, and it was busy. I was expecting a wait, but they were well-staffed, and I was invited to a chair before I even had a chance to grab one in the waiting area. I may have been lucky, as I got Ray, the older gentleman that runs the place as my barber. He's probably getting on to about 70, but has been cutting hair since he was 17(!!!!). His experience shows: I got more or less everything I look for in a haircut: friendly, but not vapid or intrusive conversation; attention to detail, including going over everything at the end and catching a few stray hairs; an unpretentious attitude; and a reasonable price. After having a mixed bag of experiences all over Vancouver (since when is $35-40 the standard price for a men's cut? It takes 1/2 an hour!), I was very glad to find this, especially a few blocks away from my place. Other notes: - Don't expect fancy salon finishings/decor: this place hasn't been updated since it was first set up in the 50's or 60's (valley girl voice: omg, so last-century, right!?) - I have thick, wavy, omni-directional hair that often grows out weird 2 weeks after what looks like a good cut, and this one stood the test of time - My cut is relatively straight forward: perhaps temper your expectations if your hoping for something avant-garde or future-retro-crazy (actually, maybe if you asked Ray to "do what he used to do in 1965" you'd get exactly what you wanted?)
