Numerous award winning butchers that offer prime cuts of meat, fantastic mince and healthy plump chickens and eggs! Wonderful bakery that makes the best breads and pastry I have tried. Wonderful vegetables and fruit stands where you get can a serious deal on great vegetables. Cheapest and most authentic pick and mix selection I have ever seen Fish monger, show repair, tea shop, cafes, clothing and boot sale, cd shops, home repair, clothing alterations ... Even a room with a scale in it! Grainger Market is magical. A must see, I consider the market a tourist attraction because of how traditional it is. The people in the booths all seem very authentic and very helpful.

It…read moreis in a decent location being in a large Tesco store and it is also the only Starbucks store within a 2.5 mile radius. This store inside is quite large and also nice considering it is in a Tesco Store, Starbucks have managed to add their own personal effects to it. Surprisingly, this isn't the first time I have been to a Starbucks in a supermarket having previously been to the Starbucks at Altrincham Sainsbury's, closer to my home. Despite being in a supermarket this isn't a franchise store and they accept Starbucks cards and rewards. Mobile ordering is possible here also. My drink was served quite quick, however the barista wasn't really friendly, just telling me they had no large straws for my drink, she handed me a spiling and overflowing drink without offering a napkin, despite it being wet and sticky. The layers of my Venti Iced Caramel Macchiato had began to merge, the overall drink quality was okay, average up to what I'm used to at Starbucks. I did however keep getting big lumps of caramel in my drink which wasn't too good. Overall, this is a nice Starbucks store but due to some issue with the drink quality and service, and the fact that going here will pressure you into going into Tesco, through going into their car park (taking more time etc) I sadly feel this store deserves just two stars.

I've visited the branch a few times over the years, and the majority of the staff have always been so lovely and incredibly helpful. However, during a recent conversation with a lovely and helpful staff member (we'll call them SM: A), another member of staff (we'll call them SM: B) randomly came briskly - almost marching - over to myself and SM: A, and proceeded to rudely interrupt our conversation, stopping it entirely, and THEN interject that SM: A needed to get back to work, implying therefore that they were not doing their job. Most times I have visited that particular branch over the years, SM: A has been present and I don't think I've ever seen them stop, much less slow down! Some other similar staff members, on the other hand, they seem as though if they slowed down any further they'd surely stop and proceed to go in reverse!

It's not a wonderful place but a good shortcut through to Northumberland Street or to Monument metro station.

It is small, as they have noted, but the quality of the curation more than makes up for its size, which isn't that small in comparison to our pitiful museums in the US. I was most impressed with the curation of the 19th century works with more modern pieces. The galleries tell a story. This isn't a museum to rush through. Reading the descriptions of each piece really helps you see the total theme of each exhibit. That is some detailed work by the museum staff, and one that should be applauded. Also of note: what a fantastic museum gift shop! Perfect for those local artisan gifts and museum pieces that you won't find in other shops. That alone is worth a stop (and doesn't require a ticket to enjoy).

Laing is a smallish but distinguished, well-maintained gallery of "traditional" art, with an…read moreemphasis on the 18th and 19th centuries (both British and international). It is housed in an ambitiously designed building that fuses old and new architecture. It looks much bigger from outside, the actual galleries are few and small. Expect to spend nor more than 1 hour at this place, which makes it perfect for a rainy day (which this was). Laing Art Gallery is located on the corner of New Bridge St. and John Dobson Street (opposite of the bus stop where many of the cross-country bus services, by like Megabus, stop). Its permanent collection is free of charge. and contrary to what I had read previously in forums, I DID take non-flash photos and didn't do it secretly, so it's allowed. Don't expect too much though: While there are indeed several masterpieces by British (Holman Hunt, Burne-Jones, Alma-Tadema) and international painters, the total number of paintings is low, and there's mostly exactly 1 painting per master. This might have to more with the size of the exhibition space than the actual collection, as their website claims that paintings are exchanged regularly to "show the impressive range of art". Anyway, compared to the faux and crap modern art at The Baltic Centre on the other side of Newcastle's city centre, Laing is pure gold. There are also examples of local and regional crafts and arts. I have a huge recipe collection and that includes several that very unusual ingredients. I file those recipes away in my head, thinking "if you can ever find amchur powder/palm sugar/tamarind paste/quail eggs/ancho chile powder/etc, you'll have to buy it and make this recipe!" Having just moved to Newcastle, I have already been impressed by how many ethnic ingredients and spices are just in your average Tesco, but Mmm... blows them all away! I think I spent 30 minutes in here, just scanning the shelves, trying to memorize what I saw so that I could come back when I needed a specialty ingredient. They have everything! For such a small shop, the selection is truly impressive. Lentils/grains/beans, hard-to-find spices, and my very favorite - a Mexican/Latin section with lots of different chile powders, chipotle chiles in adobo, and even Mexican cheese like queso fresco! And fresh corn tortillas! I thought I'd never ever find those things in Newcastle, and was well impressed. They also have olive oils and vinegars, some in bottles on the shelf and others to be tasted from large dispensers. You can fill an empty bottle of oil/vinegar then bring it back for a refill when it's empty and get a discounted price. Oh lord what else - hot sauces, preserves, loads of unusual condiments, beautiful dried pastas, various flours.... and yes, quail eggs! As they say on their website "Don't ask if we stock something, ask us where it is!" Right in the centre of Grainger Market, you will find this small but perfect foodie paradise. There's not a recipe in the world you can't make when you have access to everything that Mmm...has to offer! I'll probably be in here once a week.
