My previous review remains completely the same…read more My this visit this week provided an opportunity to get some more dim sum and lots of it. What I did see was a restaurant full of Chinese diners eating the very same food. Now if that is not a recommendation for a great restaurant ........

I can't believe this place has only one review!…read more Since switching assignments and being in Newcastle this has quickly become a regular, you just can't beat Dim Sum. The plus sides... Dim Sum, glorious and well made Dim Sum. I truly believe it's made on site as the same orders vary quite a lot between visits... they are always consistent enough, but definitely change... that can be good and bad depending on your view, but I can't say I've ever been totally let down. This place is best suited for a group of adventorous friends who aren't scared to order a bunch of small dishes and share... my personal favourites include the Prawn and Chive Dumplings along with the Pork and Prawn Dumplings, along the lines of Sui Mai. Even when I haven't loved something here I usually chalk it up to personal taste, as with the Cheung Fun (a little too bland for me), I saw a Chinese lady beside me order two of them and scoff them up with delight... to each their own! Still, the Smashed Prawn Dumplings, Deep Fried Squid with Garlic, Salt, and Pepper, and so many other things hit the spot that I can't fault misses that are down to me ordering off of the beaten path. :) Oh, the Steamed Barbecue Pork Buns... just the right size and balance of flavour! (These are simple but often go wrong, not so here.) A tip, don't be scared to ask for a sauce... a few dishes come with their specific type, but a lot of the Dim Sum dishes could use a sauce of some sort but they don't tend to offer unless you ask... their happy enough to bring some over though when asked. I haven't ventured to the mains, other than the starter Deep Fried Squid with Garlic, Salt, and Pepper (with extra chilli, naturally), because I find it too fun to have variety and the mains look rather large... what I have seen looks good however, and there's normally large groups of people going for mains at various tables so I assume they're good. The only other down side is twice the pints have just seemed off so it may be best to stick to bottles (the pints aren't Asian as it is), BUT, that could also just be a fluke and/or down to me so I'm not ready to really knock them for that and I certainly haven't stopped going! The place itself is accessible from an elevator on the main street of Chinatown... how mysterious and a bit fun! (OK, fun is relative, but it's still kinda cool.) It's perfectly fitting, larger than expected, and generally pleasant so no real complaints there/ The staff are friendly enough and have even begun to remember some of my orders so they're definitely paying attention! I have to go five stars here because I feel like I would be a hypocrite to do otherwise... I've gone here so much, it speaks for itself and I'll be very sad to say goodbye to this place when I migrate next for work. If you don't like Chinese food or Dim Sum then obviously this won't be for you, but if you like Dim Sum then hopefully this place will rock your world and become a regular of your own.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

They sure are generous hosts and the food brought me back to the good old days of tasty Chinese fast food. The place is cosy. I've no photos of the food as my elderly iPhone ran out of power as we arrived, so these gentle good folks charged it while we dined. We opted for a set meal as it gave us duck & pancakes as well as chicken & sweetcorn soup, four main meals, a sweet & sour chicken, a beef & black bean, a chicken satay and a King prawn dish as well as fried rice. We were given a huge portion of very good quality prawn crackers on arrival. We were so hungry we polished them in no time and a similar huge portion was served up with a smile. We started with the steaming hot soup and I kid you not there had to be a gallon of it, and it was good. On delivery the server gave us our first portion thereafter we were left to our own devices but despite our best efforts some soup went back. Next the duck and pancakes with cucumber and spring onion again we didn't finish all the pancakes. We had a 10 minute pause then the lazy Susan kicked back into action for the mains. The four main dishes were accommodated by a huge portion of fried rice, similarly on delivery, the first portion was doled out to us. Once again some rice went back. We chatted drank and joked the night away and then we realised all other diners like most of our food had gone so we called it a night and got gone too. We had beers, wine and on as well the set meal dishes we ordered separately portions of ribs, fried cashew nuts, seaweed and a salted chilli king prawn. I'd quietly handed over £200 at the start of the night, to the staff, to thwart our hosts paying. That worked perfectly and I was surprised to get change at the end of the meal. It's not haute cuisine yet it was a great experience and this place is worth support.

We were also given prawn crackers as soon as we came in. All delicious and served up quickly. For the mains we had the full Lobster in Ginger and Spring Onion Sauce (Oh. My. The drinks and food were served very quickly and the atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely - quite busy for mid-week. Thank you to the chef and waiting staff for an enjoyable evening.

We are visiting my cousin and her family in New Castle. Im…read moreoriginally from Latin America and my husband is Polish. We live in the USA and love Hibashi. We decided to bring everyone to this place that I found on Yelp. We sat down and they took our drink order. Normally my husband and I prefer natural drinks over soda. (Orange juice, tea, lemonade). I heard someone order lemonade so when it was my turn I ordered the same and then my husband who was next to me ordered one as well. When the drinks arrive we both get soda: a Sprite. Then they explained to me that in UK there is no such thing as lemonade (fresh water, lemon juice, sugar) but Sprite, the soda has completely replaced the natural drink. I explained to the lady the confusion. Told her we were visiting UK and this was our first experience ever in a UK restaurant. Explained what lemonade was in the US and asked if she could exchange both our drinks to coke. If We were going to have a fountain drink we prefer coke and did not like sprite. She came back again with our Sprites explaining how they had already come out of the fountain sprayer and they could not sell them to anyone else. We had to consume them. I asked my family if we could just leave and go somewhere else where customer service was existant and they were fine so I got up, paid our drink tab and we all left to a really good restaurant. I will write a good review about it. The manager/owner of this place is so xxxxxx that he lost 11 patrons just because he wouldn't exchange 2 sprites for 2 cokes. They were not even can or bottle. The guy was pouring them out from that fountain hose looking thing. I bet the cost is pennies. Not smart at all I understand the confusion and how I should have research how words differ here. However, customer satisfaction is global. Im not giving any restaurant a penny more of my money if they cant even change a sprite for a coke. Especially because there was a good reason why. It wasnt that we changed our mind. I explained we were foreigners and for us lemonade is lemons, water, sugar. This guy didnt care about his buisness (lost 11 patrons and possible later referrals plus a bad yelp review) Did not care about his city, New Castle (our fist experience in NC) Did not care about how tourists view his country as a whole. If he is the manager, he should get fired. If he owns the place they should close it down for bad service!!!
