We got to Bodega Bay around 4:30 PM on Saturday after spending the day driving up Stinson Beach, eating lunch in Inverness, and stopping to stock up on cheese at Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes. When we finally made it to Bodega Bay, we decided to head straight to the beach and fly a kite since we'd been promising it to our son all day. Since we'd forgotten to bring our kite with us, we were happy to find Candy & Kites. The store is packed full of kites and candy, as the name suggests. My wife and son found a kite they liked with the help of a kind and knowledgeable man. We then asked him where we could fly the kite and he suggested we try Salmon Creek Beach since Doran Beach was currently closed. That we ended up not flying the kite that day has nothing to do with him nor the kite we purchased at Candy & Kites. That was pure incompetence on both my and my wife's part. It involves me trying to fly the flopping kite while both my wife and I screaming at our kid to drop the damn shiny new stick he found on the beach. He eventually complied and buried it in the sand. Only then did we realize he had been holding a key part of the kite. Errrr..... loser? We eventually got the beautiful kite we bought at Candy & Kites to fly on Sunday morning. It made our weekend in Bodega Bay quite memorable and definitely comical. read more

This place has buckets full of taffy & you can pick and choose as much as you want of each flavor. I prefer this method of self-service because you don't end up with half a bag full of flavors you don't like (which is the case with the pre-packaged-only options down the street at Patrick's). The taffy was fresh, soft and appealing to the eyes as well as the taste buds. They also have a fantastic selection of kites (both for beach-flying and the kind you hang up in front of your house), and a nice selection of local guide books describing hiking trails, beaches, flora & fauna... The staff were extremely pleasant, fun and helpful. They gave us the pros & cons of the kite models we were considering and added connectors to our kite strings to make set-up a snap. read more

Right off, they sell a candy called "Whale Poop". There's also Otter Poop and Seagull Poop. It's chocolate covered toffee and is very good. :) I'm not a fan of salt water taffy, but there was enough other candies to keep me happy. I always appreciate a store that stocks local product - which they do. The shop is quaint and abundant with a plethora of kites. I love it! This place is a "MUST" stop if you're hanging out or even cruising through Bodega Bay. The owners are amazing and friendly. Great design for picking your own taffy out and making custom mixes. We have a 2 year old son and when we camp near Bodega Bay, we always stop in for a toy for him. I have bought numerous kites and wind toys from them and they stand behind their product. I just had to bring in a Prism(brand) airfoil stunt kite for damage and the owner looked it over said it would be covered and gave me a replacement on the spot. Great business! read more

This funky little store had a huge selection of kites flying outside just screaming "This store is fun". They also had a sign for taffy that made my stomach gurgle happily. Talk about truth in advertising - this store was awesome. Let's start with the taffy. So many flavors! You pay by the pound and we paid for it dearly! They had all of the standard flavors you expect and then a bunch of mixes and swirls along with custom flavors they make. After eating almost a half pound I still can't decide on a favorite. The owner was also very nice. She let us taste anything before dropping it in our sack. Then the toys and kites were amazing! We spent a good 30 minutes browsing and the store is not that big. They had rocks, small jewelry, funky little toys, and tons of kites. It was just a great place to look and find fun stuff. Overall the prices were decent as well. You can't drive up Highway 1 and not stop in this unique store, with dozens of flags, wind socks and spinners, it's like a party on the roadside. The owners of this store are really friendly and helpful, and gave us many useful tips on flying our first stunt kite. They even told us where we could fly our kite (in a good way) which was nearby. If it wasn't for their free advice, I don't think we'd have been as successful as we were getting it up in the air, and it was FUN!. read more

Ok, but overpriced & touristy. Very small, not much parking and right on Highway 1. Not very friendly or happy worker lady when we went in... she seemed to be in a bad mood. They had a large range of kites and windmills, not a wide variety of caNdy. Mostly taffy. read more

The name says it all--they have a pretty good collection of candy, with an emphasis on saltwater taffy (salted caramel being a particular favorite, with root beer a runner up) and then all manner of kites and kite accessories. I had seen this shop a few times while passing through and decided to stop. I can honestly say that I had no intention of stopping to look at kites.....I was all about the candy. I can't go anywhere near the ocean without bringing home taffy. There were also some cool chocolates that were locally made that were wonderful. By far the best taffy I have ever had on any coast. I used to make special trips out there JUST to load up on all kinds of salt water taffy. In fact, it is the only thing I've ever bought there, not much of a kite flyer but there is plenty of wind along the cliffs to use it immediately. read more

Thank God I don't live in Bodega Bay because this place is awesome!! You can't go on a little getaway by the water without taffy - and this place delivered. They had some great flavors to choose from - pomegranite, blackberry, chocolate chip - and we were excited to take them back to our room. The woman who works there is a doll - there were several people in there but she made us feel like the only ones there. She helped us pick out delicious taffy and was fun to chat with. These folks are very knowledgable about kites. Nice selection which had plenty of inexpensive models for kids all the way up to the really cool stuff for serious kite pilots. I did not make any purchases during my visit there approx. 3 weeks ago, however I did order some parts for two of my kites via telephone this week. David knew exactly what I needed,had the parts in stock, and they were delivered to my door two days later. Awesome service! We always stop by here when we are in BB. The salt water taffy is by far the best I've ever had. They have an awesome selection of kites and I have purchased 2 so far, one for my niece and one for my nephew. The kites are expensive but my sister said they are awesome kites and super durable. The wind in Bodega Bay is a great place to buy a kite in the 1st place. They people who helped us were pretty cool. The prices seemed good. Horrible, ancient, sticky, greasy taffy. Completely sticking to the wrappers, starting to separate, colors changing and running together, inedible. A few that we were able to remove from the wrapper were hard as rocks. Possible health hazard. You'd think you could buy a little taffy at the coast without having to read reviews. Beware! read more

Thanks Fiona, (shes one of the owners we met today) On our way threw BB, we stopped in for taffy, salted carmels, ect. I told her the story of how 30years ago we bought a kite there, and we still have it, and it works amazing. But before I get ahead of myself, I waited outside, while my children went in, because I had my French bulldog in tow. And I didnt feel like picking up everything she would knock over. But the owner noticing me out there, came out and offered Lilly a few doggie treats, then she proceeds to go and fill a bowl of water for her. Kindness is seldom seen in our day and age.
