Canals has always supplied my beverage needs throughout the many decades of my life, along with keeping my wallet happy.

Love everyone that works there but every single time I buy beer there, it's skunked. Warm or cold. Skunked. I don't get it.

This Canal's is located in Pennsauken on 38, on your way home from Philly. The store is pretty bare bones, so you won't find any fancy decor here. But the selection is huge and the store is fairly easy to navigate. Additionally, their pricing is always competitive. The parking lot is small, but cars move - so finding a parking lot isn't dificult. read more

I really thought I reviewed this Canal's in the past. I frequented it much more when I lived nearby. It's always been a reliable beer shop when I'm looking for the good stuff. Their prices are reasonable enough too. The selection can be rather small though. I circled several times over tonight looking for certain brews before giving up and leaving empty handed. No one seemed to be on the floor offering assistance, so that was a bummer. I found what I needed at Wegman's. Other times I've had better luck. Staff members I've spoken to have generally been nice, and I really need to sign up for their discount card. Could save some solid change that way. All around - good spot if you're in the area and want some classy suds. read more

Why would someone who no longer drinks dare to review a liquor store? Because I'm: 1) the Yelp Philly Community Manager and therefore must frequently procure alcohol to be consumed in mass, mass quantities by my guests at local events AND 2) a thrifty chick who will drive to another state if it means saving a few bucks (you're welcome, finance department guys!) Miriam W and I crossed the bridge from the city and drove just 10 minutes into Pennsauken to visit the big yellow store that is Canal's. It was packed floor to ceiling with wine, wine and more wine (and the hard stuff on the other side of the store) so it felt a bit overwhelming, but the wine is organized quite neatly on the shelves by region and varietal, so shopping was a breeze. We were in the market for organic US wines and TWO, count 'em TWO employees were kind enough to ask us if we needed help and then - gasp! - proceeded to actually help us! It was so unexpected that I thought that crossing the bridge may have been akin to entering a portal into another, more helpful dimension. We stocked the cart full, checked out in a jiffy (our purchases were even put into a box with a lot of TLC from another cashier, bringing the helpful staffing count to 4 different employees) and loaded up the car to bring it back to the venue. It was much quicker than if we had tried to go to one of the PA stores - parking is such a bitch and good luck finding someone to help you, much less what you're specifically looking for. The guests drank an entire case in about 20 minutes, so I'd say it's a good sign it was pretty awesome. Next time you need some booze mixed with the best customer service you'll ever find at a beer, wine and liquor store, this should be your destination. read more

Ah, New Jersey. The state of "liberty and prosperity." Liberty: their liquor stores are free from the the tyrannical grasp of state-controlled liquor laws. Meaning: prices are cheaper, employees are helpful and, gasp, cheerful. Prosperity: Me taking advantage of their Thanksgiving hours while Philadelphia's liquor stores decided turkey and family was more important. I came across three different employees eager to help me find the best wine selection. After politely dismissing the first two, I finally obliged the next fellow. He lead me to a lovely selection of bottles, all falling within my price range, and now, as I relax on my couch, swirling my glass of 9 dollar Tempranillo, I'm happy I went to Canal's. And by the way, I'm not alone on Thanksgiving, my family and I are going to an Italian BYOB...hence my emergency trip to New Jersey. Or as my mom says, New Yersey. read more

When it's time to stock the liquor cabinet, do not pass go unless you go over the bridge. Just $3 and a three-minute voyage over the Ben Franklin Bridge takes you to Canal's Liquor Mart. It's easy to spot by its enourmous yellow sign. Here we have, in glorious capitalistic multitude, every kind of intoxicant you could pour down your gullet. Above average bourbon selection- a highlight was a bottle of 1792 for $27- and a totally excellent Scotch Whisky selection. Compass Box, Peat Monster, Dalmore, Isle of Jura, lots o' Balveinie, Glenkinichie, Oban... they have everything for the whisky drinker. Prices are very competitive and much better than in state-controlled PA. Decent wine selection, also Belgian beer to be had. But if you are a whisky person, the prices and strong focused variety can't be beat. read more

This is probably one of the better liquor stores in South Jersey. It is priced pretty competitively and can probably only be beaten by Wegmans. The beer selection is awesome! Tons of craft beer and fun choices. There is plenty of variety in wine as well. My only complaint is that I really have trouble following the organization for the wine. One of my favorite things in this store is the cashier staff. They are all so nice and chatty. I just want to be their friend! Another bonus is that this store isn't too far from Philly. A break from the state regulations is a big value for me. read more

Love this place! My girlfriend and I are both not very big fans of going to Jersey for ANY reason. However, every 2 months or so, we'll cross the WW to restock our wine and beer supplies at Canal's. The manager of the store is super friendly as well as the rest of the staff there. It's pretty impressive that everyone knows exactly where specific wines can be found throughout the store. There is a ton of a variety and they know where to find it, just ask! Also, they usually give samples of different wines that are on sale. As for their craft beer selection, it is great as well and reasonably priced. Yes, let me reiterate that in general their prices are extremely reasonable. And, you can fill up on cheap gas while youre in NJ too! Not sure about Mark P.'s review but I have had the exact opposite experience each time I've gone there. read more

Love this place! I regularly frequent this store and find that it has a good selection at great prices. Their 6-packs and bottles of wine tend to be slightly cheaper than other nearby shops. They also have cheap mixers. I once paid $4 for a tiny bottle of tabasco at a liquor store. Not at Canals! They only charge $2. You can also get the little lemon and lime juices for under $1. I haven't done an in depth comparison, but it appears that most of their mixes are cheaper than what you would find in a grocery store. They also sell Dirty Sue olive juice. If you are as obsessed with dirty martinis as I am, this is a life changer! They also have a small tap selection for filing growlers. You can sample the current selection as long as you are getting a growler filled. The prices are typically between $12-$20 depending on the abv and rarity of the beer. In terms of other beers, they have a wide variety. You can grab a $4-$6 six-pack of a cheap domestic or you can pay a bit more for a nice craft six-pack. Typically those range from $8-$12. read more

They have a different selection than what you'd think from the outside. People were pretty friendly but the clientele was all over the place (frat boys, serious wine people, etc.). Not as big as some of the other Canal's, but would keep it in the back of my head as a backup to some of the other locations (Canals, Joe Canals, etc.). Would probably give it a 4th star if I had been there in the summer where I could roll down the street and get a Weber's/Stewart root beer and fries ;) read more

Ah, Canal's Discount Liquor. A staple in my frequent drives through New Jersey. A decent selection of wine, spirits, and beer. The somewhat hidden craft brew selection is what impresses me most. I'm convinced the parking lot is a secret "You're on Candid Camera" bit. Realistically, only 8 cars can fit and don't get me started on what happens when more someone tries to enter when another exits. You're best parking across the street. The staff is always bustling around and never really seems to care about helping you pick between that Napa Zinfandel or the Italian Chianti. Best acknowledge what Canal's is and isn't. Unfortunately, the now $5 toll to cross Ben Franklin Bridge might keep you in Philly paying $10+ for that specialty beer. read more

There's only a few things I go to Jersey and gladly pay the $4 (soon to be $5 in July) toll for: gas, groceries, good restaurant chains, and liquor. Therefore, on the way to the Super Walmart in Deptford, I always stop at Canal's looking to restock the liquor cabinet. Canal's has an excellent selection of beers, wines, and spirits...all at a reasonable price. The staff here is always friendly, helpful, and make the shopping experience that much more pleasant. Prices? When my girlfriend worked at Canal's, they were closed for twelve days. Why? Their liquor license was suspended because some of their prices were TOO LOW! NJ requires every bottle of liquor to be marked up at least one cent. Canal's sold some below their wholesale price. During those days. they remodeled their store. These guys are as low as the law allows and they even were caught selling too low. read more

Beware if you're buying wine! They have a decent selection, but a) I've never found an employee who knows ANYTHING about wine, and b) we have gotten a lot of bottles that are skunk. And when we have gotten a bad bottle, they're obnoxious--they won't even consider a refund unless you bring the bottle back (with the bad wine). And they're patronizing, as though we are incapable of telling the difference between good wine and a bottle that's gone bad. That's it, I'm done with this place! read more

Wow, who knew this place had so many great beers! I've pretty much exhausted every other Philly/South NJ liquor store looking for beer but today was the first time stopping here. I can't believe what I was missing! All the beers I like (Southern Tier, Rogue, Stone, Dogfish Head, etc) and at great prices! The staff was very helpful and helped me locate a few beers I missed. Definitely a good place to stop if you are in the area. read more

Always a helping hand when you need one here. Any question you may have they are right there with an answer and even with all the help their prices are the best in town. I went to canals twice. Both times an usually large amount of my wine was corked. Wish I could love this place but I've wasted so much money on spoiled wine that I will never go back. The store might be fine if you want to buy cheap wine which flies off the shelf but I would never buy anything more than $15 and nothing the doesn't look like it's moving fast. read more

This particular store is rather small compared to others I've been to in the franchise. However, it still carries a large variety of wines and beer. Also, there is a section with giant jugs for those having a huge party! Prices are rather good, and the location is very convenient. Easy on, easy off the little highway it is situated on. read more

The beer, wine and spirit laws in NJ are the worst. I am from NC; we can buy beer and wine anywhere. New Jersey, I have to find one store to buy it all in, which usually means I make 2 stops, one at the grocery and another at the alcohol stop. Some would call that alcoholism. I call that inconvenience. One day Jersey will catch up with the rest of the world, until then, I'll stay in NC. Now my review is only positive about this place, because they hold alcohol dominance being the old liquor store in the area with beer and wine. Check them out, enjoy the selections. read more

Always a great experience from guys on floor to last stop with cashiers. Always try wine by the glass at restaurants and if I like hunt for wine in stores by the bottle, always cheaper for home consumption. These folks always do there due-diligence and try to accommodate me even if they don't carry the wine, which is rare. Whenever family from P.A visit this is a must stop. A guy told me this is the original store, been to others but don't expect the same selection or pricing. read more

This place is the BEST!!! The largest selection. They even have things I didn't realize I was looking for!

I ordered a case of wine online and was supposed to get a case discount. I did not. So, I called the business today, and although they advertised the case discount, "you had to have called ahead to get that." So, I ended up paying 10% more for the wine. Not a happy camper. read more
