We're in the area to visit Ohiopyle and were looking for some places close by to take our golden…read moreretriever swimming and while eating breakfast this morning at Yum Yums one of the owners recommended this place. After hubby and I toured Kentuck Knob we stopped by our hotel to get our golden and headed straight here. I was worried that being Father's Day that the place would be insanely crowded but there weren't many people there and since there are so many areas to park everyone that was there was pretty well spaced out. We stopped at the boat ramp area so our golden could jump off the 2 floating docks and he absolutely loved it. The water is really clean and hubby even saw a huge fish jump out of the water while our dog was retrieving his ball. This area has benches and a walkway around the lake and there are also bathrooms, pavilions and picnic tables and seems to be quite popular with the local fisherman plus it was so clean and pristine, my only regret is that we didn't find this place sooner because we would have been bringing our pup here every morning and evening. Great place for fishing, family get togethers or for a nice walk around the lake, we're actually getting ready to head back up there now.

I think the resort could spend a little more money here on the building. I know it's a barn, but dang for these prices they charge at the resort this barn should be a lot nicer. Every other animal was displayed by the staff, but that was the extent of your interaction with any animal. You could get the same experience driving by a field or stopping by a pet shop. The animals were well cared for, and the place is clean.

Sand traps are dirt traps and the Tee boxes are so lacking attention that it's hard to find a level surface to hit the ball. In typical Bob Nutting fashion they charged $70 for 18 holes on a Monday. In years past it played like a resort course and was worth a premium price. Today was so sad as we used to play this course multiple times a year and it was always a treat. We quit playing here for several years because of price vs value to find it even worse than last time. Do yourself a favor, don't play here. Btw I realize $70 is only slightly above average now but it can't compete w/courses of similar cost (Champion Lakes, Cranberry Highlands just to name a few). Disappointing day on the course.

This place definitely draws a crowd around this time for a different reason than other seasons. So much so that when we were driving in, there were hoards of people near here which made for passing by to be a bit more difficult. With all the people parking along the road and on the bridge to walk down to this area. On our way back we decided to stop here and sneak a peak at what all those people were peeping on our way in. I understand why it was busier on a Sunday than midday on a Tuesday. See, this place, when the water is low, show the remnants of a town and the old bridge. It's not something you get to see each year, but when the conditions are right, you get to see it. Basically, when there is drought conditions, the water level drops enough for people to walk right out onto the old remnants and walk the part of the bridge that still remains. Usually, this is under fifty feet of water, but every so often you get a glimpse. When the water is this low you get to see the remnants of Somerfield (or Smythfield before the renaming), or at least the foundations to where buildings once stood. The town stood for over one hundred years before flood control came through and decided to build a dam which cause the demise of the town. Buildings were razed and the town flooded, bridge crossing included. The Great Crossings Bridge can be seen and if you are adventurous enough to attempt to walk on the old structure you may do so. The bridge itself has a storied past, completed the same year as the town was founded, part of the original National Road, and it was christened by the then President, James Monroe and his entire Cabinet. However, take it in while you can. When the Youghiogheny River starts to rise again, it will slip beneath the water until the next time it returns.
