That said, I went to Tom at this barber shop after he made an appointment for me over the phone. I found him via the review sites. Tom is very personable and easy to talk to. Like I always do at the beginning, I quickly explain how I want my hair cut. I have moved away from clippers up the sides and scissors up top to scissors all the way around because the clipped sides look too "military" when freshly cut. The main thing I asked for is that it 'lay over a little bit' on top. This is because I don't like it too short and spikey on top. He asked if I parted it. I told him I don't since it doesn't lend itself to parting and that I just work it into place with my hands. It turned out a little shorter than I would have liked. Note that it was a balanced haircut. That it was. Considering the area, his price was also appropriate and I tipped him. Just out of curiosity, I had asked a stylist/barber shop in the mostly Dominican area at the top end of Manhattan near the Cloisters the day before how much they wanted and ... yeah, right. So I made the appointment here with Tom. This is the classic rendition of the barber shop with the multi-colored diagonal bars twirling around behind a round glass cylinder outside. Also, the shop is right on the route of several NJ Transit buses that will take you to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan in short order.
