That said, I went to Tom at this barber shop after he made an appointment for me over the phone. I found him via the review sites. Tom is very personable and easy to talk to. Like I always do at the beginning, I quickly explain how I want my hair cut. I have moved away from clippers up the sides and scissors up top to scissors all the way around because the clipped sides look too "military" when freshly cut. The main thing I asked for is that it 'lay over a little bit' on top. This is because I don't like it too short and spikey on top. He asked if I parted it. I told him I don't since it doesn't lend itself to parting and that I just work it into place with my hands. It turned out a little shorter than I would have liked. Note that it was a balanced haircut. That it was. Considering the area, his price was also appropriate and I tipped him. Just out of curiosity, I had asked a stylist/barber shop in the mostly Dominican area at the top end of Manhattan near the Cloisters the day before how much they wanted and ... yeah, right. So I made the appointment here with Tom. This is the classic rendition of the barber shop with the multi-colored diagonal bars twirling around behind a round glass cylinder outside. Also, the shop is right on the route of several NJ Transit buses that will take you to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan in short order.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is nice mellow music such as Sinatra is usually playing at a low decibel level. The second thing you notice is the beautiful map of Sicily prominently displayed on the wall. In addition to the great surroundings, Vito always comes through and gives a quality haircut. He always cuts it to my instructions and I always leave looking good. In addition, Vito is smart enough to realize that I am a hairy Italian and takes painstaking measures to shave all that nasty hair growing on the back of my neck. He doesn't just buzz it with the clippers as most barbers do, but he tenaciously attacks it with hot shaving cream and a straight edge razor. That is the only way all that nasty hair is ever going to get off my neck! I don't know why most other barbers cannot do this right. If I really want to splurge on myself, I will also get one of Vito's famous shaves. Every step of the shave process is a real treat. The hot towel followed by moisturizers and hot shaving cream is a luxury every man should experience at least once in their life.. The shave is a total relaxing experience. As I am a hairy Italian, it is virtually impossible for me to shave without feeling stubble afterwards no matter how many times I hit the same spot with the blade. On the other hand, I always leave with a baby smooth face after one of Vito's shaves. I don't know how he does it as I have an extremely difficult beard to shave, but Vito gets the job done right. Vito also has a killer espresso machine and brews a mean espresso that puts Starbucks to shame!

Bro, it's 1 o'clock, and you never told me when you open. So I ask him when he's available, throughout the whole conversation he's very dismissive, and I tell him to book me for the only time they have available, he asks me for my name to make the appointment and books me for saturday 3. So I show up there today and he tells me they didn't set me up. So I'm trying to get to the bottom of it, there are 2 barbers in the shop. He first says I didn't call them, and some other place. I show him the business card he gave me and they determine which one of them I called. Then he tells me he told me the available time that they had, and didn't actually book it, because he claims I didn't ask him to. So I tell him that I actually did, and then he tells me that it was booked while we were on the phone through the mobile app by someone else(Which i have no knowledge about, even if that was the case I suppose he has to call me and let me know so I don't show up at his place for an appointment he failed to book). Also if that was the real case why would he keep changing the reason why they didnt set me up. Bottom line, these guys are dodgy and disrespectful. They blame the customer for the mistakes that they make. I have no idea about the quality of the haircut that they give, but nothing can make up for the horrible characters that they have.
