The price for a child's haircut was 30, but I was charged 35. I asked why and the owner told me, "he had a lot of hair." In my 40 years of going to a barber I've never heard of that. Not recommended. I was looking very shaggy and in need of a new stylist, as my previous one is out on maternity leave. Having some time after visiting a customer in Rutherford, I turned to trusty Yelp and did a search and came Ames Barber Shop! Good reviews, nice pics, and walking distance from where I was. There's a sign out front stating "walk-ins welcome", and that what I did! Shop is staffed by a mother and daughter duo! Mom was there alone and a customer had just sat in her chair, so she said it would be a few minutes. Momentarily, daughter Isabela walked in the door ready to cut my hair! She's been cutting hair for 15 years and has the sharpest scissors in town! Have to see what my hair looks like tomorrow after I wash it, but so far, my haircut looks good! read more

Went in after getting a haircut I wasn't happy with and to my luck my girlfriend found this place on Yelp with solid reviews. I woke up all distraught knowing I'd be going on vacation with something I wasn't confident in. We walked in and was immediately seated after the previous patron was finished. I told her my situation and she got to work. With some magic of her skills she turned my haircut into something I am proud to walk around with now. I have been going to Ames Barber Shop for 20+, close to 30 years. Vinny was my barber back in the 80's, early 90's and loved going to his shop because I was always intrigued by the "gadgets" he had and the jar with the "blue water" in it that he used to dip the blades into (according to my mother). Plus I liked his cuts and he always remembered how I liked it trimmed back then (even if it was a terrible choice on my end, in hind sight), and I never went astray, always going back. Somewhere down the line, Vinny took in Adrianna as his apprentice. When you've had the same barber cut your hair for years, like most people, you politely say you're waiting for them. As time went by, and I became an impatient teenager, I didn't always wait for Vinny and I started sitting in Adrianna's chair. As I got to know her, it was apparent to me that she was a really cool lady of European decent that spoke multiple languages, including Spanish, and was very cultured and funny. Bantering in Spanish became our thing while she cut my hair. By that time, alternating between Vinny and Adrianna was no big deal because Vinny did a splendid job teaching Adrianna about the classic cuts, how to use a blade, etc. Basically, how to be a great barber. As I got older, my taste in haircuts did too. When I was experimental, Adrianna accommodated, when I wanted a simple traditional cut, she knew what to do. The same goes for now. I can always count on Adrianna, and now her daughter, to give me a professional cut whenever I walk in there. They're great at gauging what the customer may want, but are always about providing the cut that you want. Every time I go there, I see people of all ages waiting for a cut. Parents with their kids calling her auntie Adrianna, people inviting her to weddings, bringing her gifts from a trip they took, and so on. It's a testament to how she likes the environment in her shop to be, professional, yet friendly enough so that you always feel welcomed back. read more

Excellent haircut and excellent service. Isabella cut my hair - which hadn't been cut in several months. I felt like a long hair'd freak when I went. When I came out, I felt rejuvenated. She also trimmed my beard and eyebrows! I guess I needed some man primping! She seemed to know what I needed - which is a good quality to have. She was friendly and chatty - but not overly. This is another good quality. I don't really need to know their whole life story while sitting in the chair. Isabella talked just enough to make me want to go back again! The woman took over an hour for two customers then botched what I asked for her to do for my child's haircut THEN charged me an extra $5 because she used a buzzer and claimed that counts as two haircuts.... That is absurd. I left her a tip by accident. I will NEVER go here again. read more

In the past year, I have had a very difficult time trying to get a haircut in New Jersey. Place after place continued to butcher my hair and give me something completely different than what I've asked for. I'm originally from San Diego and have been getting my haircut from the same person for over 4 years so this past year has been challenging to say the least, especially because I am very particular when it comes to my hair. That was until a few days ago when I tried this place. Isabella with very little direction gave me the exact cut that I wanted. It was perfect. She truly is gifted at her trade and I will go no further when looking for a cut. I would highly recommend giving this place a try. Luckily there was no wait at the time that I came in. 5 Stars. I'm a recent transplant to E. Rutherford, and I was starting to look a little shaggy. I've tried one other shop in town a few months back, and it was good, but I wanted to try someplace new. The 5 star reviews here on Yelp drew me to Ames. First impression, the shop is great. Very clean, bright, well organized. Not cluttered, plenty of room. Tastefully decorated, no loud or obnoxious music. I was the only customer - at noon on Tuesday ( all I wanna do... is have some fun... ) As many of the other reviews mentioned, this is a mother daughter team. I got the daughter, as mom was chatting with a friend. It was a quiet day. I'm not sure where the mom is from, but listening to her brought me back to my days travelling all over. After listening to her for 20 minutes, I'm guessing Romania? The haircut was great. The daughter really knows her stuff. Some scissor work, but a lot of clippers, and it came out really nice. Great attention to detail. I feel like a new man. Daughter wasn't very chatty, but that's OK, I'm not into barber shop talk, I'd rather get a great cut. Price was a little bit more than I'm used to paying at a barber shop ($20, +tip), but given the size of the space, the fact that we're in NJ, and the quality of the cut, totally worth it. I don't write reviews often but after today's cut I thought I should give some credit where it's certainly due. I just moved to Rutherford and needed to find a new spot. Unfortunately left my favorite Italian barber back at home, but I have to say I think I've actually found someone better. Adrianna does an amazing job. She is personable, talkative, and she really cares about making you happy (assuming you're not a rude douche). I appreciate how she is detail-oriented and treats the haircut like an artist would treat their masterpiece. I will definitely return to get the same level of service and attention, and to hear some great stories. I've yet to meet her daughter but I'm sure she is just as talented. Second time there, waited over an hour since the stylist seemed more interested in talking while cutting another gentleman's hair and even taking a phone call out on the street. I waited patiently since my turn was next. However, the freed up stylist next to her called on another individual who came in 30 minutes after me . Both of these stylists ladies did not even call out, next. I got the impression, because i wasn't of their culture or nationality, they werent interested in serving the rightful next in line. If they spent less times talking on their phones, they'd be more effecient. After today, I will never return and give them my business. read more

I went here because of the great reviews but got a very poor haircut. I hate writing bad reviews but here it goes. The lady did a horrible job. She didn't blend my hair correctly. I now have 2 different lengths instead of a blend. She barely asked me any questions of how I ware my hair and such. Very disappointed in the cut I got. read more

I have finally found THE barbershop. Both Adrianna and her daughter, Isabella, are experts in this art. On top of that they are fun and professional. They will remember your name and haircut, and have many interesting stories to tell. Every time I go, I'm sure to take a business card or two to handout to friends and family. They are extremely well. $17-19 without tip will get you a men's cut and style. I have paid almost ten times this amount for a haircut (I am embarrassed to say that) but I have never had a better cut than at Ames. read more

Just a note to say that this has become my favorite barbershop, more so than any I have visited in the city. Terrific service. Adrianna is masterful and careful and has a lot of skill that she applies to every detail. Especially for someone with as little hair left as me! My beard is trimmed perfectly every time.
