Maui Humane Society - Sand + shade make for a nice kennel break!

A friend and I decided to have an adventure with a MHS doggo. An afternoon walking on the beach,…read moresnoozing in the sand, enjoying the quiet and the sun, and having a bite of Mexican food and a pup cup before returning to the noisy and overcrowded shelter. Our doggo for the day was JT, a smaller black pitbull mix, who turned out to be a real gentleman. JT was happy to join us in our adventure, jumping into the SUV like a pro with a stuffy in his mouth and a wag in his tail, which matched our vibe exactly :) He was such a good boi at the restaurant, ignored the chickens begging from us and took a quick nap under a chair, waiting for a shrimp or a morsel of chicken to be offered from the gods. JT jumped for joy when he exited the car and smelled the sea air, life is good! We had a leisurely stroll along the sands, then he plonked himself down in the shade of a tree to destroy a tennis ball, then sploot out and have a nice snooze with a sandy nose and a smile on his furry face. We gave him a good hour, as it must have been a nice break from the noise of the shelter, with the trade winds gently cooling him and the murmur of the waves in the background. Once he woke up he was ready for the next part of the journey.....a pup cup from Starbucks :) In and out of the SUV like the pro he is, he waited patiently at the outdoor table with our friend while I sourced the pup cup. He wasn't sure for a second what it was then after his first lick he became a connoisseur of pup cups with a creamy smile and a glint in his eye. After a lot of lip licking and grooming we realised it was time to return him to the shelter. Once there he gave us a downward dog bow of thanks and he was off to his hopefully temporary home at MHS. What an adventure for all of us, and so enjoyable! If you have time to take a MHS dog out for the afternoon (12 noon pickup, 4pm dropoff), please, go on an adventure and give them a pup cup and some beach freedom, go jogging with them, take them on a drive and let them sniff the smells of Maui, give them a mini vacation. MHS provide a backpack with everything your doggo will need, blankie, stuffie, chew toy, treats, water and bowl, a safety belt addition for your car. All you have to do is provide a vehicle, time and fun! JT was a lovely boi, very well behaved, and he was a good example of a MHS dog. Unfortunately black dogs are the last dogs in the shelters to be adopted, I know I adopted one myself (I have 2 rescue bois at home), so hopefully there is someone out there waiting to meet JT and see what a fantastic doggo he is....could it be you? Why not spend some time with a MHS doggo and find out?

We…read morestarted the process before the government shut down and ran into a ton of delays from the Department of agriculture. The system for getting dogs over here is deeply difficult to understand in addition to delayed. Jay was absolutely phenomenal in helping us with the process and making their release here as seamless as possible. He met us with such an incredibly great attitude Every time we spoke and always was willing to go above and beyond to submit paperwork and answer any questions we had. He truly was heaven sent for this process as it was incredibly difficult for us. We will always be grateful for Jay and his help in getting our babies here. His acts of kindness will always be remembered. It means More to us than we can articulate. Mahalo jay for your compassion, Due diligence, and aloha spirit. Our family will always remember you!

We could have left her at home, but we made the decision to board her TO BE SURE SHE WOULD BE SAFE. Not only was Bernadette lost, possibly never to be in our home and part of our lives again, but she was lost ten miles from home. Bernadette is part of our family so we were devastated. The cat cages at Alpha-K9 are made of plywood and hardware cloth which are enclosed inside a secondary "building". Bernadette escaped her cage by pushing through its rotted plywood. She then escaped through holes in the secondary housing. The people at Alpha-K9 are nice, but the cat boarding facility is of substandard construction and is inadequate to safely board felines. Alpha-K9's owner, claimed they had recently worked to improve the cat boarding area before our cat escaped. She also claimed that they had never lost a cat before. As we spoke with neighbors of Alpha-K9, one individual told us of a cat previously gone missing from the facility. During the time spent searching, we realized mosquitoes are terrible at the facility. The presence of mosquitoes put your pet at risk of mosquito borne disease such as heartworms. We searched the ten mile area for twelve days. Hope faded with each passing day, but we were fortunate and on day twelve, we found her hiding in the grass on a neighboring property. She was thin, dehydrated, and traumatized but we were reunited. Be forewarned of boarding at Alpha-K9. **in response to Laurels comment. Laurel, our cat Bernadette is extremely friendly and during her first stay with you was apprehensive as it was her first time being boarded. We explained that to you prior to bringing her the second time. Bernadette is not a wild animal, the rotten wood seemed to be the real issue. How unfortunate you can't acknowledge your shortcomings. So far as our inspection of your facilities goes, I would recommend anyone choosing to use Alpha-K-9 do an "extreme review" as obviously the cursory review we did did not expose rotted wood and substandard secondary containment fencing. Regarding your interpretation of what kind of cats you choose to board. I recommend you don't board cats. That's your choice, we are just sharing our experience so other folks don't suffer the same as we did.

It's hard work running a kennel but you wouldn't know it with all the smiles on the girl's faces there! Plus they send photos & video updates so you can see your pet settling in. The grounds are well maintained and there are plenty of other dogs to help socialize our pup and keep him company overnight. There's no place like home, but Alpha K-9 is a paradise vacation for any pet! Thanks girls! We'll be using you again and again in the future!
