They are not worried about feral cats proliferating, I just took a feral there to have her spayed and was told I need an appointment and the lady actually shoved a paper with a QR code so I do it. I have had 2 colonies I have taken care of for almost 20 years because I get them fixed with MHS, I haven't had to go there for a while because of this. Now technology has taken over and there is little humanity left after this. Not only was there no compassion from the woman but I was not inspired to go there anymore. A friend and I decided to have an adventure with a MHS doggo. An afternoon walking on the beach, snoozing in the sand, enjoying the quiet and the sun, and having a bite of Mexican food and a pup cup before returning to the noisy and overcrowded shelter. Our doggo for the day was JT, a smaller black pitbull mix, who turned out to be a real gentleman. JT was happy to join us in our adventure, jumping into the SUV like a pro with a stuffy in his mouth and a wag in his tail, which matched our vibe exactly :) He was such a good boi at the restaurant, ignored the chickens begging from us and took a quick nap under a chair, waiting for a shrimp or a morsel of chicken to be offered from the gods. JT jumped for joy when he exited the car and smelled the sea air, life is good! We had a leisurely stroll along the sands, then he plonked himself down in the shade of a tree to destroy a tennis ball, then sploot out and have a nice snooze with a sandy nose and a smile on his furry face. We gave him a good hour, as it must have been a nice break from the noise of the shelter, with the trade winds gently cooling him and the murmur of the waves in the background. Once he woke up he was ready for the next part of the journey.....a pup cup from Starbucks :) In and out of the SUV like the pro he is, he waited patiently at the outdoor table with our friend while I sourced the pup cup. He wasn't sure for a second what it was then after his first lick he became a connoisseur of pup cups with a creamy smile and a glint in his eye. After a lot of lip licking and grooming we realised it was time to return him to the shelter. Once there he gave us a downward dog bow of thanks and he was off to his hopefully temporary home at MHS. What an adventure for all of us, and so enjoyable! If you have time to take a MHS dog out for the afternoon (12 noon pickup, 4pm dropoff), please, go on an adventure and give them a pup cup and some beach freedom, go jogging with them, take them on a drive and let them sniff the smells of Maui, give them a mini vacation. MHS provide a backpack with everything your doggo will need, blankie, stuffie, chew toy, treats, water and bowl, a safety belt addition for your car. All you have to do is provide a vehicle, time and fun! JT was a lovely boi, very well behaved, and he was a good example of a MHS dog. Unfortunately black dogs are the last dogs in the shelters to be adopted, I know I adopted one myself (I have 2 rescue bois at home), so hopefully there is someone out there waiting to meet JT and see what a fantastic doggo he is....could it be you? Really bummed to leave a 1-star review, but this is based on mine and my husband's recent experience. We've been coming to the Humane Society for as long as we can remember and never had issues until this visit. Service: When we walked in, we were greeted, but the lady at the front demanded we sign in. Normally we don't have to because we're just in and out to visit the animals. We love animals, but we can't adopt yet due to our living situation. We signed in online, but honestly, we've never had to do that at any other location even on Oahu. We went to visit the dogs first - the facility there was clean. But when we got to the cat house, the smell was horrible. We've been coming here for years, and it has never smelled that bad before. Opening the cat house door was like getting smacked in the face with a strong, unpleasant odor. As we were looking at the kittens (and we always sanitize in between touching them), a lady wearing a mask walked up and asked, "Are you visiting the animals or adopting today?" We told her we were just visiting, and she walked away. I was barely even touching a kitten's paw through the cage when she suddenly said, "MAKE SURE YOU SANITIZE YOUR HANDS IN BETWEEN!" I told her, "Yeah, I know." There were plenty of other people around us, but she only told us that. We moved to look at more kittens, and even though we had already sanitized, she came up behind us again saying, "MAKE SURE YOU SANITIZE IN BETWEEN TOUCHING THEM." My husband and I looked at each other thinking, what the heck? It felt so uncalled for, especially because she was only talking to us. For context, my husband and I were the only local Hawaiian couple there. Everyone else was Haole, including her. She wasn't telling any of them to sanitize, just us. Honestly, it felt kinda racist. We were minding our own business, doing everything right, and she kept targeting us for no reason. We probably won't come back until we're ready to adopt - and even then, maybe not. I don't see what's wrong with visiting and showing love to the animals. We left feeling really disappointed and uncomfortable. read more

Jay was absolutely incredible in the process of shipping our dogs from California to Maui. We started the process before the government shut down and ran into a ton of delays from the Department of agriculture. The system for getting dogs over here is deeply difficult to understand in addition to delayed. Jay was absolutely phenomenal in helping us with the process and making their release here as seamless as possible. He met us with such an incredibly great attitude Every time we spoke and always was willing to go above and beyond to submit paperwork and answer any questions we had. He truly was heaven sent for this process as it was incredibly difficult for us. We will always be grateful for Jay and his help in getting our babies here. Who goes to humane societies on vacation? Me. My husband and I like to visit rescues, shelters, or humane societies sometimes to see if we could help out for a day by taking some of the dogs out to play/walk. According to their website, Maui Humane does have this kind of program where you can basically take a shelter dog out to the beach/around town for a day. You have to apply/register/reserve a date ahead of time though so unfortunately we couldn't do it this time. Still, we wanted to visit to see if we could hang out with some dogs at the shelter. The space is really well organized. They've got a building for cats and kittens, another area for dogs, and yet another area for other critters (even a tortoise!). In the cat area, you can hang out and hold the kittens and cats. They have them in individual crates and also in an open roaming area. We spent a lot of time here because our friends love cats. When we got to the dog area, we were hoping there was a similar sort of set up (at least for puppies and little dogs), but unfortunately, all the dogs were in their own crates/fenced off spaces. We were able to ask one of the staff if we could hang out with one and she helped bring one of the dogs to us at one of their private gazebo type spaces. That was a lot of fun, but I feel like those types of meetings were definitely more for folks who are seriously looking to foster and adopt. That wasn't us this time around but they did let us know that they have a program to help fly dogs to the mainland in case any visitors want to adopt! It sounds like Maui Humane, like many other shelters, are (or are getting) very full. If you can, adopt, don't shop and help foster or adopt some of these animals! read more

They are trying but they do not use media or marketing, and their exposure on the fence on the highway. There is months wait for spay and neuter. Their fundraising is one demential, no events and awareness events, for over 5 years now. They don't light it up for any seasonal event, it's poorly run, and they lack advocacy. read more

Most of these reviews are for adoption services. I would like to shed some light on Maui Humane Society's cremation services. Both of our senior dogs passed away in the last 3 months. Our first dog passed away at home on a weekday afternoon, and our second one was euthanized at the vet mid-day on the weekend. Since we were opting for cremation, we were able to bring both of our fur babies to the Maui Humane Society for this to be done. The staff were very sympathetic and professional in the send off of our dogs. When the time comes and we're ready to welcome a new dog into our home, we will be sure to rescue another dog from the Humane Society. They are amazing and we truly appreciated them during these difficult occasions. read more

They have a huge fundraiser to help with efforts from the tragedy in Lahaina. They are trying to reunite animals, care for animals, AND creating care packages for owners with animals. This is huge and the people of Hawaii have truly showed the rest of the world solidarity and humanity. Their website was easy to maneuver. Donating money to them was easy. They didn't promote it as much but other people are promoting it for them, they have an Amazon List of items they need and for those who have prime - can send directly to them however it is an island so there is about 1-2 week delay to be delivered. It was my first time going to the humane society, to hopefully adopt. I really had no idea what to expect. But the volunteer made us feel so comfortable. Answered all our questions and concerns. Due to covid, you do need to make a reservation and put down a non-refundable deposit $25. If you adopt a pet that day it will go twords the fees. The MHS is so nicely set up. They have big beautiful trees that provide lots of shade for all those furry friends who need to play. Everything was clean. And it didnt take long for us to find our next addition to our family. The adoption process was smooth and I loved that they are well taken care of medically and physically while there. They do their best to set you up for success. I highly recommend MHS. read more

The public needs to know how the inhumane MHS operates. Suggestion: MHS receives MILLION$$ every year in donations, grants and funds from private parties, corporate sponsors, the state and county. BUILD MORE dog, cat, horse, or whatever you need to expand. STOP begging for adoptions and fosters you REALLY don't want to facilitate since you just want to keep animals in cages and enclosures and or adopt out feral animals to vulnerable people. Experiences below from the course of the last 10 years. This experience is about them adopting out feral animals, dogs in particular, to vulnerable people, like seniors. I helped a senior and disabled friend adopt a dog in 2023, who was a sweet dog; we were not informed this dog was feral. It kept escaping the house of the senior and would return later in the day or evening. The neighbors kept calling into MHS and the police because they had nothing better to do with their time and MHS kept ticketing the senior. Little did the senior know, MHS prosecutes you if you receive a ticket and SENDS YOU TO COURT the next day. When a person loses their animal, they are IN DISTRESS, but MHS doesn't care. They tell you "we informed you" that you need to do this or that but the person receiving their ticket is in distress and doesn't hear or remember all the instructions. Their ticket does NOT show that you have to GO TO COURT, there is no date listed, no time to appear listed, you are just supposed to remember what some enforcement officer tells you when you are in DISTRESS. The senior in question now has TWO bench warrants issued because of this INHUMANE MHS operating procedure. She found out about the Bench Warrants by chance, and she will address them along with the OUTRAGEOUS fines that are issued. On a side note: I was a corporate sponsor of MHS for many years. When I went into the MHS to help the above senior, the reception we received was less than friendly. The majority of front desk staff are gruff and unfriendly. There are some nice people, but the general feeling you receive is "we are stressed." This may be due to poor middle and upper management and internal chaos. On several other occasions I had gone into MHS to visit some animals to see if I could foster and help out since the shelter was "overcrowded." I specifically stated I wanted to help older dogs and while there were no older dogs at the time, I was referred to younger dogs, which is not an issue. However, when we went to try and set up the foster after the recommended multiple visits (did I mention the time and gas money to drive out there multtiple times). One of the young dog handlers apparently didn't like me and felt like I was not a good fit for one of the dogs I wanted to foster. She told me no and didn't make any other offers even though I have owned multiple dogs in the past, breed purebred registered dogs and am a very experienced dog handler. The authority these handlers have and the way they treat citizens who just want to help, is despicable. I am utterly disgusted with MHS and they way they operate. There are other wonderful rescues on Maui that treat people with respect and appreciation for wanting to help. read more

Maui Humane Society is located off the 130, just follow the signs. Open every day from 11 am- 6 pm, except closed on Sundays. My husband and I stopped by this pet shelter on a Saturday just to visit some of the dogs (I was also missing my little girl dog back at home and thought it would be nice to let some of these pets get a little love and attention from us for a little while). We entered through the front office (where you will find a clean unisex restroom, in case you need to use it during your visit) and then walked over to the dog section. It made me feel so sad that there were so many dogs sitting in there kennels just waiting to be adopted :( and it also made me sad to see a few dogs that were very sick or not in the best shape :( but do hope that all of these dogs will get adopted. Anyways, if there is a dog that you are interested in getting to know better, you can ask an employee (although there are friendly volunteers around, only employees can help assist with this) to take one out of the cage and escort the dog to one of the outdoor caged hutches. Here you can play with the dog, feed them treats (dog biscuits are in each of these hutches), pet and talk to dog, etc. My husband and I ended up doing this with 2 separate dogs. We fed them a few dog treats that we had purchased at Target earlier before coming by and enjoyed showing these dogs a lot of love and attention, which they definitely craved and needed. After our time with the dog side, we walked over to the little critter cottage where you can find bunnies, guinea pigs and birds. There is also a very large tortoises named Freddie that roams free around this area. Then we walked over to the cat section. Inside (please note that the critter cottage and the dog section are both all outdoors) it had a very strong cat smell and smell of urine (the dog section did have smells of urine too). There were many cute cats and kittens just meowing and looking around at all the visitors coming in. Prices to adopt a pet are pretty reasonable. If you are interested, be aware that this pet shelter has specials each month that include adopting a kitten/ cat on Fridays for only $5, discounts on senior pets and those that health problems and so forth. Please consider adoption before purchasing a dog from a breeder or pet store. All of these pets need a loving home (maybe yours), love and a family to be with. read more

First off, we're only visiting and don't have room for an extra cat right now, but we couldn't resist swinging by to check out some island cats and kittens. The Maui Humane Society did not disappoint! First off, the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. This set the tone for the rest of our amazing time here. As cat people, we had to visit the Cat Ohana first. So many cute cats and kittens ready to be adopted. Seriously, if we didn't already have three, we would have been flying some of these guys home (I was told they would even help make getting them back to the mainland easy). So many freaking cute furballs! And unlike our humane society back home, they let you hang out and pet and play with many of them. If you're here for a bit and missing your cats back home, I strongly recommend you stop by here for some quality cat time. If dogs are more your speed, they had a bunch of cute dogs looking to be adopted. Best of all, we were told that you can even take a dog out for a day on the beach if you're in need of some quality dog time. In addition to all of this, they have a 20 year old tortoise (no, he's not up for adoption), bunnies, ducks, and Guinea pigs. So much to see and love. And before you go, be sure to pick up a Maui Humane Society t-shirt. They're very cute, make a perfect souvenir, and help to support this great organization. Hands down one of our favorite stops during our stay here. Until the Molokini Crater gets kittens, it can't even begin to compete. read more

I want to love this place because they do such important work. They are on my facebook news feed and I am so happy to see the adoption stories and revel in second chances for the animals. I stopped by the other day to donate a few items. Whilst there, decided to check out the cat ohana. The odor of the cat feces was overwhelming. There were so many volunteers there teeming around but no one was cleaning up the cat poop. I have a cat and trust me one trip to the litterbox can stink up a household. Can you imagine dozens of cats???. It was repulsive. Please clean the place regularly because the stench is so off putting that I had to flee. I imagine other potential adopters would too. read more

Just stopped in to get a couple of dog tags for my four legged kids and I had prompt and friendly service from a nice young man despite the busy activity all around in the lobby. A family was adopting a sweet looking smiling pit bull, and other people were asking questions about adopting. Glad to see so much aloha for the dogs and cats who need homes and love. Stopped here on vacation to check out the dogs. The facilities are really great, large-sized pens with blankets and dogs, and even separate areas for the cats and the rabbits. They had solid personality descriptions of the dogs on the pens. Spotted an Airedale terrier mix named Wynn who was so adorable. They ship dogs to the mainland, they're prices ($110 for adults) is so affordable. 5 Stars!!!!! read more

We wanted to participate in the beautiful program for a few years. We finally decided to take the plunge this last trip. We made the original contact back in August of 2017 based on how popular this is program is. We were asked to chose from a list of dogs at the shelter and we went right for the older dogs sheltered there. Obvious reasons for us since we believe that they should be the chosen ones who have lived a longer life and deserve the best opportunity to find their forever homes. We were greeted with Kalani. A beautiful, 5 year old dog who had only been with Maui Humane for a short period. Man, that dog could bark at the shelter! We loaded him into the back of the Durango. He immediately came up front, stood on the console and proceeded to lick our faces. We knew that this was gonna be good! We took Kalani to a couple of beaches where he was received really, really well. We wore that boy out. He loved the sand and the ocean. We sat at Makena beach for a bit while he dug a hole in the sand a took a nice nap! The MHS provides a backpack full with a compliment of treats, water, bright leash and collar touting "Adopt Me". We also took Kalani to Nonu in Kihei for something to eat. Do this if you have a heart and a day to spend with a pet who was given up for whatever reason. It will fill that heart. I still tear up thinking about him and the fact that we were simply not able to take him home with us. Attached are a few pictures of Kalani. Aloha from the place with the best customer service on Maui, Let me say that having discovered this place I find myself there almost every weekend. The Maui Humane Society offers a Doggie Beach Day, where you pick up a pet for the day and treat them to what ever the little guy or girl would desire, mean while you speak with people who approach you about the adoption process, and of course you would post on social media with the hope the little guy finds a home. The staff is amazing, the most caring people on the island work here, ever time I find myself speaking with the girls and guys there the emotion and though that goes into each interaction is beyond measuring. They ask about how the pet was while out with you, or how they like other dogs they meet, or maybe if they like the food they got and this is all in the hope to learn about him or her to be better suited for providing care to the four legged creature. Finding people like this in the world that we live in is certainly a pleasure, reminds you of what could be if we just took care of each other this way, for now I'll settle for treating the pets this way. The Maui Humane Society is just amazing, if you have the time and the heart take a pup out and treat him or her to some tacos or burgers, go for a run in the forest or on the beach, take a pet out and get some fresh air on a hike or a drive, seeing a snout sticking out your back window and a tongue hanging out is priceless. From the moment we made the phone call the staff was incredibly accommodating given the circumstances. Despite our technical difficulties during the "virtual adoption" Melissa was amazing and walked us through every step of the process and even allowed us an adoption photo face mask and all. It's very obvious the animals are well cared for from the time they are brought in....only 3 hours in and we officially have a lively rambunctious kitten who is in no way shy of making his presence known to us. I wanna rescue them ALL!! You walk in through the office and visit the animals; dogs, cats and the like. The dogs are so adorable and have a back story to them. There's one here that has stitches in his head and another that's blind in one eye. I didn't see any puppies but they range from 1-7+ years old. I asked to see a young girl, she was only 7 months. I didn't know she was that old until I played with her. They let me go to the yard; grass area. She just needed a little more training but was very social with other dogs, that's what the young lady told me. I could tell she was young because she wanted to jump on me. I even got a chance to run around with ball and frisbee so we could play outside. I am able to adopt a dog just debating between which one. I want him/her to sleep on my bed with lol! So she obviously can't be too big. Also signed up to volunteer take one for the day until 3pm. They are all booked up until August..so stoked!! read more

My boyfriend and I have been a regular visitor at the humane society for a while now! We stop by whenever we pass by just to play with the cats and see the dogs. The facility they have for the cats is AMAZING and so spacious (compared to the shelters I'm used to back in New York). So we actually took our dog to get spayed here last month and I would highly recommend them! We payed 40 DOLLARS (UMM HELLO) to get our pug spayed- and as broke students, we were so grateful that they provide this service! They offer spaying and neutering for extremely low prices for ANYONE, but they do appreciate donations! At first, I was a little hesitant (40 dollar for surgery?), but am happy to report that we had absolutely zero complications and they were super professional and friendly throughout the process! They even e-mailed us a list of how to prepare for surgery and details of post-surgery care a week before the surgery! read more

The volunteers are friendly, but the staff is definitely not. I personally feel that anyone that works with animals should be kind and loving toward animals. If I am to leave my beloved pets in your care I should be able to leave feeling like my pets will be kept safe while in your care. I have never felt this way with the Maui Humane Society. I find it crazy that people's dog go missing for DAYS! My deemed "dangerous" dog gets out and gets picked up by them in less than an hour of his disappearance... I call when they opened at 11am to inform them that I was at work and could not get there until 5pm. They told me that was fine and I could pick him up anytime before 6pm. Thinking he would be taken cared of and safe because it's a HUMANE Society. I got there at 5pm to pick him up. He was panting so bad and had cotton mouth like they never gave him water ALL DAY! So note to self, never leave your dog there and to just leave work because they don't take care of them. I have so much respect for what these people do! We discovered a domestic rabbit hop-hop-hopping along in our field, like it was in some Disney fairytale, completely unaware of the dangers it faced being on the loose like that. After gently capturing it and taking it indoors, feeding it a bunch of special tasty veggie treats and helping it to feel comfortable under a chair hiding place, we made FOUND BUNNY posters and put them up in our neighbourhood. We were prepared to keep the bunny for a while to see if the owners would call to retrieve their pet, but after a couple of days, we could clearly see that this arrangement wasn't going to work. Bunnies take a lot of care! They need straw and a better space to occupy than the living room floor. So, I posted the bunny to the Humane Society's Lost and Found page, and they were really quick to get the posting up and live. The next day, after bunny kept us up all night long with its restless behaviour, we decided to take it in, in the hopes that it would receive better care than we could give it. The people who took the bunny were just so lovely and helpful! They were immediately enamoured with the bunny, since it was pretty much a giant, in terms of domestic rabbits. A day or so later, I did get a call about the bunny and directed the person to the Humane Society to retrieve the pet. A few days later, the bunny posting was down from their website, so I have to assume it was picked up by its owner. That was fast! I would feel comfortable taking any found animal in to the Humane Society to care for, as they have a long period of care for found animals, before they will even put them up for adoption or fostering! There are other animal sanctuaries on the island, but I appreciate the efficient organization of the Humane Society and how quickly the bunny was reunited with its owner. Highly recommend keeping this important resource in your back pocket, as there are so many stray and potentially ecologically disastrous animals on the island. Like Carole K., I want to love this place, I really do but YIKES with all of the fees on top of fees! We recently adopted a puppy and was asked to put down a non-refundable $25 hold for him, no problem. (The $25 hold fee is NOT APPLIED TOWARDS THE TOTAL COST OF THE ADOPTION - we were not informed of this, but still, no problem - we were excited to bring our new puppy home). Then we were charged for his adoption, $201.04 which includes his 1st set of vaccines, a microchip, a dog license, and a spay/neuter service. Upon paying, we were told that our pup would be ready for pick-up tomorrow after 4pm, after his neuter. Due to scheduling conflict, I called MHS to advise that we would prefer to pick up our puppy tomorrow instead of today and was told that would be fine BUT we'd be CHARGED A BOARDING FEE (??!#@?). So like Carol K, I'm super appreciative of the work that MHS does and am totally supportive of its' mission and vision but geez, stop twisting my arm all the way backwards with your fees - is one night's boarding for a puppy you've had for over a month going to kill you? We've paid and paid and now are being told we have to pay Again ... it's been a lackluster experience thus far and I'm thinking we may steer clear of MHS in future. read more

I love going to humane societies because I love seeing the different kinds of dogs, cats and small animals they have available. But I was a little disappointed with the Maui Humane Society. I don't know if it was because of its location, but this placed smelled extremely bad! Maybe it was a combination of a hot day and being in the middle of no where with very little shade, but it was really bad. Many of the kennels the dogs were held in were slippery and many of the dogs would slip and slide around. I guess I'm just scared for their health because if they are slipping around I feel like that can't be good for their hips. The cat house is a different story, it's very clean and the volunteers/workers that were there were very kind and friendly. I'm more of a dog person but I spent most of my time in there because of the workers. read more
