You'd think that countless raving reviews, well - more comments - from friends and friends of friends would not make my body do such things. Yet, there I was. Thankfully, after adjusting to being out in a restaurant - that I had NOT been in before - situated in the glittering, glamorous West End and with the boy, I had a grand time. The food attempts to be 'authentically Scottish'; pardon the British category above, but Scottish is not an option on the list. This is most likely due to Scottish food seeming to consist of fish suppers and the like. Anyhow, there is a good range of 'Scottish' food here, as well as steaks, chicken dishes and the usual pasta/pizza/burger stuff you can expect to get anywhere now-a-days. The prices could be a little much but if you make the most of their lunch or pre-theatre deals you'll be laughing as much as your bursting belly can. Additionally, try the cocktails they are to die for. Although, sadly they are not included in the lunch/pre-theatre deals...

It's the perfect place to take your parents if you're tired of getting the same ole Italian. Scottish menu, beautiful set up, excellent service, and absolutely delicious. It's classy without the attitude, and it's perfect. I stuffed myself absolutely full, though I didn't realise it at the time. I didn't look like a lot of food when I saw it, but it adds up course by delicious course. To top it off, I ordered a cheese plate for my dessert, and, full of local cheeses, it was absolutely splendid. Everything about this restaurant is very well thought out. I was wholly impressed by the entire visit. The only wee part about it was having to take the lift to get to the toilets. But other than that, I can't find any fault with it at all.

Popped in Sunday evening for a quick bite and first impressions - couldn't find the restaurant as it said it was on Cowgate, Kirkintilloch. It's actually right behind it on a side street, across the road from Smiths Hotel. Noticed walking in, that they have opened a Burger Room downstairs. I'll check this out another time! Friendly enough welcome, but as there was a private event on, we had to make do with a table right at the entrance, that can only be described as a waiting room. Massive flatscreen TV on the wall with MTV Teen Awards on... just what I love to watch eating out... ahem. Lass sat us down and gave us the menus.. or should I say battering rams, as they were so large, we both couldn't read at same time, really no need for a menu to be bigger than the table! Took drinks order & Fiona ended up with a small glass, not a pint of diluting juice. Couple came in after & same waitress sat them down and explained the menu & 2 courses for £9.95 etc.. Something she didn't do with us. Some consistency would be useful. We had a voucher for buy one, get second curry for a £1. Always sounds great, but you know it ends up the same cost. Compulsory requirement to test the Vegetable Pakoras (Briony's fault!). I had the Brasserie Masala Lamb (Patia/Tikka Masala style), Fiona went with Chicken Dopiaza. Couple next to us snagged our pakoras (well, the server did take them to them and they graciously accepted despite ordering 5 minutes after us!). Their loss, as we ended up getting theirs, which was a portion each, not to share.. moah ha ha! Nice and crispy, but still a little doughy inside. Nice flavours though, so a 3.5/5 for these. Didn't have to wait too long for main courses. Portion sizes.. well, no issues here whatsoever - quite generous & we both struggled to finish the dishes. Mine was pleasant enough. Tender lamb and nice flavours, but it did become boring after a while with the sweetness. Fionas again was nice, but suffered the same fate. Not being an Ashoka curry go to person, it really did feel like the sauces were added to the dishes, compared to say Cafe Asia in Muirhead, where it's cooked fresh. We had a few different people serving and all quite pleasant and well mannered. Our bill was wrong, as they charged us for the drinks from the table next to us, that had already left..doh! As usual though, the bill despite a second curry for a £1, still came to £25 for one starter and two curries. Not that much of a saving, as thats what we would pay in Cafe Asia. Probably would give this another go and try something different. The burgers going past our table looked amazing, to the other restaurant downstairs (rather random I know!). One of the better places, but not in the same league as Mother Indias/The Dhabba etc. You Gotta At Least Try It - :-D

I'm not a huge fan of northern French cuisine as it tends to have too much dairy in it for my taste; however Cote are very amenable to offering alternatives where possible so I didn't have much trouble finding something acceptable. Their lunch and early evening menu is very good value for money; however we were too late to partake of that on the Friday evening so it was a la carte and the specials menu all the way! It was starting to get busy but the staff seemed to be coping well - at least until they tried to serve us with the wrong set of starters... things went slightly downhill after that. Next, my side dish of butternut squash failed to arrive with my main course of hake. Our server was very apologetic of course, and once remedied it arrived fairly promptly - or at least before the fish went cold. The next hiccup was with the order of our second bottle of wine. The first had been a complimentary one that you get on your return visit if you register with them on their website, so naturally we took full advantage of that! However, when the wine waiter brought the second bottle (recommended by the house), he erroneously said it was a Languedoc wine, when in actual fact it was from the Loire. That's a pretty basic mistake for a wine waiter to make, and blaming it on his line manager is a pretty feeble excuse that smacks of poor training. Then another flask of water arrived, although we hadn't even started the first one as they had failed to provide water glasses! Oh well, we'll just carry on with the wine, shall we? We had enough room for dessert, and at this point our ever-apologetic server surprised us by offering a half-bottle of dessert wine for the table at her own expense. Jolly nice it was too. Clearly they were having a bad night when we visited; however the actual food was top notch, the staff could not have been more attentive and apologetic, and they did their utmost to sort things out. I don't blame them for the cock-ups and it certainly will not stop me from enjoying the delicious food here in future.

Where Sodexo's takeover of the food outlets on campus has overall been bad (food on campus was much better and much cheaper before this happened!) they have gone to some effort with this outlet, which is located in the new residence Willow Court (and not signposted at all, so is only frequented by those In The Know and who live nearby). So like I saw they're basically a canteen. Menu contains staples including - burger and chips, spicy chicken, pasta, and some vegetarian options. It's pretty limited in choice but the selections are fairly good - there will probably be something that takes your fancy. INgredients are good quality and the food is well cooked and reasonably priced. This is by far the best place for food on campus, and especially for breakfast - nice fresh pancakes with syrup/bacon/blueberries, and orange juice for only 50p per big glass! Coffee machine and various flavours of tea available, and there is also an extensive choice of soft drinks. You couldn't go here too regularly because you'd get bored eating the same dishes all the time, but the chef is good, the food is tasty, and there are nice wee touches like garlic mayo on the side with your fries. This place doesn't offer much variety, but the dishes it does serve are tasty and done well and there's lots of little trimmings and additions - maybe this is why they claim to be a brasserie! I recommend the burger or the spicy chicken and flatbread. I recommend the breakfast pancakes more (get there before 11 for these). Staff could be better tho, just saying. They're definitely not rude, just a bit distant, you kinda get the impression they have better things to do than serve you (which they probably do, to be fair).

But then I got distracted by the idea of macaroni cheese so ordered that and a Coke instead. The rest of the menu is kind of standard - baked potatoes, sandwiches, as well as larger hot mains like mince and tatties, pasta, chili. Inside, the cafe is nice. Nothing really stands out in terms of decor but it's bright and there's lots of seating. I'd say the crowd is definitely the older demographic as well as parents with kids. My food didn't take long to arrive and even though the topping was burnt in parts it still looked pretty good. Once it had cooled down a bit, it was really tasty and there was a tonne of cheese in there so it had a lot of flavour. I would say the portion wasn't massive - I could have definitely eaten more. It came with some slices of bread as well as a salad which I confess I didn't eat - bread with mac doesn't seem like the right combination to me and I'd prefer garlic bread or toast at least. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and chatty too. Really lovely and welcoming. The only reason this isn't a 4-star review is the price. For a lunch portion of mac cheese (which wasn't huge) and a soft drink the bill was over £11. Now I know this is Clarkston but I just don't see how a macaroni cheese can be £8.95 when it's essentially just cheese and pasta.
