Seafood Trio
Greg F.

First time here today. Very impressed with the interior motif. Very nice and open feeling. The staff are very nice and welcoming. I ordered the seafood trio. It was very tasty and the food was very fresh. My only complaint would be that the food was over seasoned (salty). I will come back another day to see if it was just me.

Shrimp and Crab Enchiladas

Right off the bat - great food and menu options! I Was so excited to order shrimp and crab enchiladas especially because they were on/or were able to do corn tortillas, the tacos were also ordered in my group with chicken and they were quite popular and had great flavor! We originally got on the waitlist but then we were able to get a spot at the bar- the Drinks were delicious and the bartenders were nice and attentive! One observation is that the tables at the front for those waiting were quite messy Particularly there was beverages spilled all over the ground mainly just something to consider when turning over the "waiting" area. Will be back!!

I have been to the other location, which was a 5/5, but this location just wasn't quite the same. I will say, the halibut tacos were phenomenal! Some of the best I have had. The chips were never ending and fresh and warm. I would skip the salad and the tuna/mango thing next time. The salad came with missing avocado (although they did bring a side).

Calo Kitchen + Tequila has all the vibes. Drinks specials are carefully curated because the cocktails come out sexy and tasty. And during this dinner, we had quite a few rounds. Can't go wrong with tequila as part of your brand. There were lots to choose from on their food menu. They bring out chips, salsa, and a bean dip to start. Some of us had the ribeye tacos and enchiladas for our mains. The portions were large and you can tell they were prepared thoughtfully. Everything tasted well judging by the way everyone on our table cleared our plates. The next table had a birthday and they brought out a huge fried ice cream coated in churros. My friend's son "almost" had a birthday too so we had them bring him out one. It was large enough to share among the four of us. Our server was attentive from the moment we sat down without being overbearing. The ambiance of the restaurant was quite nice.

Excellent food and service. We ordered everything the waiter recommended and were not disappointed. Ambiance also beautiful.

I hadn't been to this restaurant since it first opened years ago. I remember liking it, but I didn't find it particularly memorable at the time. This visit completely changed my opinion. The food was amazing and reminded me of when Javier's used to be really good. My salad was fantastic, the chips and salsa were fresh, and the blackberry margarita was excellent. The service was also outstanding. Overall, I absolutely loved everything and will definitely be back soon. Totally worth it!

Chicken Fajitas

Delicious, high quality mexican food! I appreciated that the food didn't feel too greasy or heavy, and had a healthier twist. I ordered the chicken fajitas and had no complaints. The rest of our party ordered the taquitos, crab and shrimp enchiladas, and two item combo. Everyone liked their food and the free chips & black bean dip was a huge hit. Service was ok, but we enjoyed the lively atmosphere! We were there celebrating a milestone birthday, but unfortunately the waiter didn't acknowledge it or bring anything to celebrate. Overall a positive experience and would probably come back if we were in the area!

Not sure what happened, guess shrinkflation happened. Ordered trio plate: beef enchilada, crispy taco, chicken taco. Been here many times but it's been a while. Was really surprised to see the food come out and how small the food was even though the price increased Check out pic, put the fork for size comparison. The fact the taco is the same size as the enchilada

Enjoyed a light lunch here on Sunday. We enjoyed the Strawberry Jalapeno and Grilled Pineapple & Chile margaritas to start along with their complimentary warm chips, salsa and bean dip. The chips were light and salty and slightly addicting. For the entree, we split the seafood trio which is a shrimp and crab green enchilada, a soft shrimp taco and a shrimp and lobster chile relleno. We were so hungry we didn't get a picture of the enchilada. All the items were balanced but we liked the enchilada the best. The chile relleno pepper was very spicy which we were surprised about. There was ample seafood in the items. It was great to split the entree, as it would be a lot for one person. The service by the bartender was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed lunch and will be back. Only suggestion is to consider a Happy Hour during the week.

They say you get what you pay for and I certainly did tonight (2/27/26). Although it may be on the expensive side, every penny is worth it at this restaurant. Not only were the short rib enchiladas and the steak fajitas absolutely incredible, the service is where the five stars come in. Our server, Joshua, was top notch. This man could easily work at a Michelin restaurant. Don't even get me started on Noah. I have never in my 40 years of dining out been treated with such respect, graciousness, and amazing hospitality. I'm not one to leave long reviews and the five stars are what count but I'll say that the margaritas are amazing no matter which one you order and I've never had a dish that didn't exceed my expectations. But this review is all about the service so be ready to be blown away from the minute, you walk in the door! Kudos to Joshua, Noah, and and especially management because these men obviously are treated well or they love what they do. Make note - this is not my first time eating here and every time I've been extremely satisfied! A true treat and a total gem of Laguna Niguel!

Taquitos en Tres Salsas

My birthday was Tuesday and my husband already asked a few times if I'd like to go out for dinner. I had a bit of a busy week already so I really didn't have time to think about what I wanted. Later that day we found out that one of my kids had an event to attend at 7 in Ladera Ranch, so we decided to get dressed, drop him off, and eat somewhere close. Nothing in that area sounded real good at that time but we remembered Calo Kitchen + Tequila was recommended by a server at another restaurant, and the Laguna Niguel location wasnt too far down Crown Valley. We were seated right away. My first impression was loving the ambiance. Its elegant without being over the top. I felt comfortable in trendy jeans and heels but could've easily dressed up too. Two servers introduced themselves, one was a helper. I like that we knew if we needed something and couldn't reach one, we could look for the other. We were promptly served waters and chips with salsa and black bean dip. I ordered a spicy mango cocktail and my husband got a sprite. My cocktail was absolutely delicious and I had fun eating the tamarindo candy on the straw. I hate when I over eat so I opted for the taquitos appetizer for my meal. Kristen our server suggested it and it worked out perfectly. There were five chicken taquitos made with street tacos size tortillas. They had a layer of green salsa on top as we as some type of aioli. I personally would've enjoyed them more without the aioli but it was not a deal breaker. My husband ordered La Tampiquena and enjoyed his meal. After dinner I was given a little ice cream sundae with a candle (I specifically asked not to be sang to). I dont know what brand of vanilla ice cream that was but it was delicious! Kristen was extremely professional, helpful, and very personable which is exactly what I hope for in any restaurant. Her personality was kinda fun too, and I totally appreciate that!

A very chic and well designed establishment. Everything was clean and the service was amazing. Our server Alyssa was attentive; and the manager Jose stopped by the table to ensure everything was up to expectations. The menu was extensive along with their tequila offerings. Food options had so much to choose from; but since we stopped in before a workout. We went light. Would definitely come back!

Caló Kitchen + Tequila Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Caló Kitchen + Tequila

Does Cali Kitchen have set hours for lunch? Do they have a lunch menu?

I don't think so, their menu is all day long. There's a lot to choose from not to worry and all are delicious!

Is there a Happy Hour Speciala?

No. They don't have happy hour specials.

How much is the corkage fee?

$20

What is the noise level?

It was on the quiet side when I was there. Not obnoxious loud music.

We can take our dinner party with 25 To 30 guests?

Hi Saeed Frequent visitor to Calo and party planner. This restaurant is amazing but this location is on the smaller side. I would recommend calling the restaurant directly,…

Do they have happy hour?

No, they do not

Do they have weekend brunch?

Yes and unlimited mimosas for a reasonable price.

What beans do they offer instead of their pork fat beans?

I think so. Their menu states at the very bottom "Some recipes such as beans are very authentic and may be made with pork. Please notify us of any food allergies." They may have a pork-free alternative.

Does this place have Happy Hour?

Not sure

What are your Sunday hours? I made a reservation for 10:30am today and they said they're not open yet. Please update your hours on Google and Yelp if you're turning away customers.

They will open at 11:00 Am

Do you use Peanut oil?

No, they use a blend that consists of 75% canola oil and 25% olive oil and sunflower oil for the chips

Vegetarian options please?

Hello Preeti, I know they have Veggie Tacos and if your not Vegan... enchiladas & fajitas can be made vegetarian :)

So they have taco Tuesday specials?

No, they do not.

Do they have a corkage policy and fee?

Can you make a reservation?

Yes. They also have a waitlist that you can join prior to going in on Yelp.

Are dog allowed?

i believe they have a few outside tables facing west. Fairly narrow, would not want to bring a large dog, or actually a dog at all. Could be in the way of servers/guests. Call to find out for sure! Great drinks, great staff & food.

Your least busy lunch time?

Probably Mon-Thurs., either get there at 11:30 or closer to 1, is my guess. Worth the wait, if you have to!

Is there taco Tuesday specials?

i don't believe so, but call...949-409-7380.

Is there Happy hour ? Days and times?

No happy hour.

Are there Taco Tuesday specials here?

Not at all,

We came in on a Saturday night and it wasn't very busy. Both, my husband and I had the enchiladas combo, he went with the red sauce and I had the green one (salsa verde). Enchiladas were okay but my black beans were not tender, and the rice had some hard pieces. Food on my plate was lukewarm and the cheese wasn't totally melted on my enchiladas. :( Generally, we always have good experience with other Avila's locations but something is missing here. Service was good. Our waitress was super nice and attentive but not overwhelming. I remember asking for the pronunciation of her name then because it's an unusual name but I totally forgot it now since it has been a few weeks. :) 3.5/5

But this location does NOT have this on their menu which actually stunned all four of us sitting at the table. This is one of the main reasons we frequent the Avila's chain and needless to say, this was very disappointing. Because they did not have the table side guac, we had to settle for the premade stuff which was bland and tasted nowhere near as flavorful as the Table Side Guacamole we have had at every other Avila's El Ranchito we have frequented throughout Orange County. This location did have a low carb fajitas option which was interesting. It did NOT come on a sizzling skillet like the regular dish, and the beans were whole (not refried). Instead of rice, they give you salad. I did not love the dressing for the salad btw. I am glad they have this low carb option, but it is significantly different from the normal Sizzling Fajitas version which they do offer here. Service was decent. And we loved their large outdoor seating area covered by shade trees.

The food was good, decent, not mind-blowing, but definitely satisfying, and the service was excellent. The vibe is chill and old-school, giving off a relaxed, nostalgic feel that many will enjoy. El Cortez offers good, affordable Mexican food compared to other places in the area, which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the 3-item combo, which included a hard-shell taco, two soft tacos, rice, beans, and chips, all for $20. That's a fantastic price for the amount of food. My friends ordered the enchiladas, and my partner enjoyed a chimichanga for around $16.

I went to El Cortez last week and here is my experience: SCAM! Terrible in every way! Swindlers!…read moreBait and switch service by the bartender and the owner. DISHONEST! Read all the one-star reviews; they all say the same thing! Watered-down drinks (I'd bet my left bicep that all of the high-end alcohol in those displayed bottles has been replaced with either water or low-quality booze), hard sales pitch on upgrading the alcohol and selling extra shots (which we declined), but when we got the bill, it showed drinks we NEVER ordered plus dishonestly upcharged alcohol that was never ordered and then added on to the bill! Prices on the menu different than what they charge--they play dumb and have been for years (check all the reviews). Felt like I was back in Mexico--muy autentico! This wasn't a "one off" because it happened again on a different visit, to a large group of us. And when we complained, the bartender gaslit us and refused to remove the wrong charges and dishonest upcharges to cheat us out of our hard-earned money. Criminals! Thieves! Scam artists! We vowed to never, EVER return again because this is clearly part of their standard dishonest "business practices." The owner is one shady individual (a nice elderly couple outside told us that this restaurant is known in this area for being highly dishonest and disreputable), and the greedy owner clearly doesn't care about the people who dine here. Bait and switch is the name of the game at this establishment, plus tiny portions of subpar but overpriced food that gives stomach issues (AKA FOOD POISONING) as a bonus, stale chips, extra charges for everything possible (hoping the customer won't notice), different prices than listed, bartenders who are told to water down drinks and tack on lots of extra charges to the bill to cheat customers, servers who seem terrified of the volatile and hostile management (we saw the owner screaming at staff), dirty crumbs all over the chairs and seats because there apparently is no working busboy to wipe up the tables and booths properly...I could go on. The ONLY good thing about this place was the salsa--muy spicy with good flavors. Other than that, there was nothing to redeem this squalid little hole in the wall. Watch your bills carefully, people! And ask yourselves this question: how does a business like this stay operating for 30+ years when there are never any people dining there (it's empty 90% of the time), they open late and close early, they serve inedible food, they don't care if diners never return due to terrible food and watered-down drinks and false charges, and they play games with the alcohol, drinks, and pricing in order to CHEAT customers? Plus they don't care if a cockroach or two lingers about? Hmmm, seems I should get my laundry done there... maybe the owner should "tell" me about the "car?" ;) Maybe this place should be investigated by law enforcement or elected officials, if you know what I mean. (Uh oh, hope I haven't jeopardized my life by telling the truth about this place, lol.) Final verdict: Dine (or drink) here at your own risk.
