My grandmother was under the care of Calstro Hospice for just over a week and in that time frame everyone was absolutely amazing. We had an amazing experience. As a RN myself it was the first time dealing with Hospice and seeing the ins/outs. They truly made sure we had all our needs met and made sure my grandmother was comfortable, they went above and beyond. Erika our social worker was absolutely so amazing! Peter the LVN was great! And also her shower aide Marisella was truly an angel. My grandma opened her eyes at the sound of her voice moments before she passed. Calstro Hospice deserves nothing but condemnation for the horrific care my mother-in-law received during her final days. As a hospice facility, their role is to provide comfort and dignity--but instead, they subjected her to unimaginable suffering and negligence. My mother-in-law, battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer, was left in agonizing pain due to their gross mismanagement of her medications--not once, but twice. Their lack of communication among staff caused her to endure medicine withdrawals, which worsened her condition rapidly. When we tried to advocate for her, they accused us of stealing her medication--a baseless and cruel accusation. We had counted the pills and knew exactly where the issue was: they weren't communicating about dosage increases. The pain they caused her directly contributed to her rapid decline. She couldn't eat, couldn't move, and was in so much pain that even a gentle touch was unbearable. She lost all dignity, forced to endure accidents in bed because she physically couldn't get up. No family should ever have to witness their loved one suffering like that in what should have been a time of peace. We fired them and took her to the hospital, where she passed just a few hours later--finally free from the agony that Calstro Hospice inflicted. Their failures are inexcusable, and no one should entrust their loved ones to this place. Families deserve compassion, professionalism, and care in such vulnerable times--not negligence and disrespect. Stay far away. read more

Calstro Hospice went above and beyond in taking care of my grandfather. Their liaison May, is charismatic, charming and compassionate. She truly went above and beyond and helped us every step of the way during an extremely difficult time. Their nurses were quite knowledgeable and anticipated my grandfather's needs before they were even know. They were always available when we needed them and certainly exceeded our expectations. I have to say, I have used 4 hospice services here in the high desert . It wasn't until I seen Kelli B. In action with patients that I chose that Calstro was the best for our Dad. When I first hired on Calstro I wasn't to sure about there services . Once we was able to get Kelli B on for our Dad we couldn't be more happier . Very caring care and loving , quality of care exceeded my expectations once Kelli and German were our team . In my opinion Kelli and German both are a huge asset to Calstro. I had been working in the memory support unit of an assisted living facility for 4 years and Calstro was by far my favorite hospice company to work with. I would get quick call backs, med refills asap, and anytime I request a visit for a resident they were extremely prompt. The families love JR. Like Steve A. (post from Sept 2023), my dad was under Calstro's care while at Westmont of La Mesa. He had numerous medical issues, including blindness, congestive heart failure, and a catheter. Kaiser OK'ed hospice because he would call 911 anytime his lungs filled with fluid or when his catheter was blocked. Calstro cared for him for over a year until he passed in Oct. 2023. Steve A.'s review says it all--I agree with everything he wrote. JR, in particular, was outstanding. He was able to gain the trust of my dad so they could change his catheter in his room, rather than take him to the ER--those journeys were really hard on him. Calsto Hospice provided hospice care for my Dad at Westmont of La Mesa between April and June 2023. They were FANTASTIC. They were conscientious and kept me advised of all medications (including for pain), their possible side effects, any changes to the treatment plan, and so on. JR in particular was so compassionate and helpful. They always took or returned my phone calls promptly. All their nurses and staff who came to care for Dad were kind and professional. It seemed like there was always someone there; though at times it was the Westmont care team also. Calstro worked seamlessly with the Westmont staff. In August of 2017, we were introduced to Antonio "Tony" Espinoza. When he first visited our home to meet with the family to explain the process, we were grateful for his kindness and honesty. The love, the passion, the information, the genuine care given to my special needs daughter ( 35 yet the mentality of a sweet 6 year old) was off the charts. They are wonderful. Their staff members were found to be kind, gentle and caring. My mother-in-law was on their service over a year and most of the care given was timely and effective. This is not an easy job and not just anyone can do it, nor do it with grace, so I give much credit to all the staff to have the knowledge and character to be able to love in difficult times and to do the difficult things... with compassion. Covid made this job especially difficult as well, but they persevered in getting care to all those in need putting themselves at risk. My mother-in-law was never vaccinated and through it all, never got covid. I recommend them to all I know who are in need of such care. read more

I thought some of the nurses were insensitive. A common phrase I heard when I spoke with them over the phone is "there's nothing else we can do." When you have a dying loved one and that's what you hear from those who are supposed to provide support, care and comfort, it's discouraging and emotionally depleting. Avoid using this hospice agency, if at all possible. read more

My mom was in late stages of ovarian cancer when I called Calstro Hospice for their help. We were using a different hospice company that was a horrible experience. Calstro Hospice came to meet us the same day I called and made the transition so easy. I knew right away my mom was in great hands. Her nurses were so amazing. They did their job but also we're loving and caring and became my moms friends. They also became friends to my brother and I. Seeing a loved one slowly dying is so painful but having a hospice company know how to help, what medications work best, and giving us all the advise and tools possible made things easier. Met with RN Alex Castro today for the first time. He explained how hospice will help with my loved one. He was very thorough. One thing to note, if you elect hospice you will no longer be afforded treatment for an illness. It's either one or the other. We found this out when my loved one went for a follow-up. We ended up canceling hospice for further treatment. Check with your health insurance company. read more

I want to thank my Mom's LVN, Jennifer. She has been with my Mom for 1 1/2 years. She is compassionate, caring and straight forward. Besides me taking care of my Mom, I know Calstro has done a great job in taking care of my Mom. Olga, who comes to bathe her is so caring and careful in bathing her and does an exceptional job. Michelle, the RN, is caring and will discuss my Mom after each visit. The only negative thing is the person answering phones could be a little more compassionate, as it's very hard when a loved one is sick and not sure what to do. This is a poorly ran business that drops the ball constantly. My dying mother ran out of medicine on several occasions. We had asked for more care which was never followed through. The nurses were nice, but when we called them or text them, we never got a response back. I could leave a malicious review on here but I'm going to stay professional. If your loved one is going on hospice, please seek another company. I really hope this company uses this review as a learning experience and betters themselves. I know you can't make everyone happy, but not returning phone calls and running out of medicine is a disgrace. read more

When your loved one qualifies for hospice care, it can feel like you have been kicked in the gut. We first signed up with a big very well known company and they sucked. I felt like my dad was not treated like a valuable person. But then I contacted Calstro, I immediately got a call back and someone came over and talked to me about my dad. I felt confident that this company was going to treat my loved one with respect and dignity. Fast forward and I am still very happy with Calstro Hospice. The caregivers keep me advised of my dad's condition and answer all of my questions. A social worker came by and talked to me at my dad's Assisted Living and she wanted to know about my dad and our family. My dad's caregiver really takes an interest in him and she makes sure she wakes him up with a smile, she gets him bathed, brushes his teeth, feeds, and helps him to feel good about himself. She bandages his skin tears and documents his condition. Then she calls or texts me and lets me know how he is doing. read more

Calstro Hospice was not only accessible at a moments notice, but were willing to sacrifice their own time to do what it took to make my mom feel secure. In one instance, Oscar and Alex came to visit my mom at 4:00 am without any forewarning because she was having difficulties breathing.
