Oh dear. We did not have a good meal at Calle 21. We were misled by the good reviews. Our server was very sweet and accommodating when my sister and I asked if we could have chile rellenos as a plate instead of in a burrito or in a taco, which was what was on the menu. Chile rellenos are my go-to at Mexican restaurants. Nothing else on the menu appealed to me. We were served a plate with pretty good refried beans and rice, which tasted pretty standard, and also some shredded ice berg lettuce and tomato, along with 2 chile rellenos, which had no sauce on them, which is how they are normally served. I figured since it wasn't on the menu they weren't used to serving them that way so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and put the hot sauce out server brought to our table. The problem was with those chile rellenos. They were cool inside (I wouldn't say cold, but not warm). The cheese wasn't even melted inside. The worst part was that I tasted freezer burn. So they are frozen, not freshly made chile rellenos. Ick. I've had some less-than great restaurant meals but never have I ever had food that tasted like the freezer. And there's no excuse for not serving hot food. The place wasn't that busy, as it was still early in the evening. Our friend had chicken tacos that she said weren't very good either. She her words were: "There's good quality chicken and poor quality. This tasted like poor quality". So I won't be back and I can't recommend it to you either. Portland has no shortage of Mexican restaurants. Honestly I'd rather eat at Taco Bell than go back to Calle 21. read more

Stopped by Calle 21 for dinner after a nearby movie. The server greeted us warmly and we chose our own seat in the casual space. My sister and I both love chili rellenos so we asked if they could make a plate of them. They were happy to. When they came we were quite disappointed. We decided they were reheated from frozen. There were still areas inside where they were cold. They were also very uniform looking and greasy. The beans and rice were standard Mexican restaurant fare. I'll be skipping this place in the future. read more

Great spot for affordable Mexican food in NW Portland. In this economy, $30 for two filling dinners and a beer is pretty awesome. They have great combo deals with drinks and a cute patio. We've visited several more times and the salsas have improved. The Chili Rellenos burritos is great. Staff are friendly and engaging.

We always wanted to come here cause we pass it all the time and finally made an effort to come. Soooo glad we did!! I love Mexican food (so picky honestly) and very happy with the whole experience. We came for the burritos but ended up getting fish tacos & enchiladas. So delicious!!! Also got a mango margarita 12/10 and a pacifico on draft yum. The service was great and food came out so fast! The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating so we sat outside on this beautiful day. They play music and it's a nice vibe :) I highly recommend coming here (especially if you're picky w/ your Mexican food) We are coming back for burritos next (they also have breakfast!!) keep you updated! read more

I ordered the Taquitos De Potatoes with a side of rice. My spouse went with the fajitas, and my son went for the nachos. All three meals were good. Fresh ingredients, quick service, and the restaurant is in a great location. It's nice and clean with plenty seating. Prices were great as well. Definitely would recommend and return! read more

The service was great. Food was served quickly and the patio area is great for the summer. I was surprised by their beer selection, as they serve Estrella which is a hard beer to find. Tacos were good although small, so I recommend getting some sides. Overall it was a pleasant experience. read more

I ordered a chorizo breakfast burrito to go. 6/10 burrito. Very average, nothing special, I even added tomato, lettuce and sour cream. You did get a lot of bang for your buck however. $12.75 for a chipotle size burrito and if you are starving and just want the basics of chorizo, egg and rice, than this is for you. I ate the whole thing because I was hungry but I would not go out of my way to get it again. No vegetarian options available FYI. Quick service, only took 5 min. The atmosphere looked nice, and maybe more lively in the evenings but during the weekday at 11 am, no one was there. read more

I've been excited to try this place out since they recently opened. They did not disappoint. Their tequila and mezcal selection was solid. The server/bartender made excellent POG mezcal margarita by request. I did not complain. I ordered a 'Surfin California burrito' to go with my drink. The burrito is a good portion. It's filled with shrimp and carnes with potatoes. I'm not one for potatoes in my burritos, but there was just the right amount of it, and it was cooked perfectly for my liking. Pretty lively area with a few good restaurants surround it but this place is really good for delicious Mexican food when you need it close by and the surrounding neighborhood a nice little quiet place to walk around and enjoy. Since the fall season is coming better find a coffee place nearby. That being said the food here is really delicious and the burritos are big and generous for the price they give. I highly recommend getting the super burrito or the fish burrito though I'm biased because I'm a burrito enthusiast. I like a lot packed in for the money they charge, you're gonna be full you might have enough seconds if you're not a glutton like me. I do love my food or I wouldn't be in elite. Horrible customer service experience tonight. I should have known before I walked in as there was only one customer in there at the bar and the food server was apparently occupied with some type of discussion and couldn't be interrupted to take an order. After standing around several minutes waiting and seemingly ignored, I'd had enough. Won't be back and won't recommend either. Crap customer service. And the front door was filthy like somebody was living there. So you can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. read more

Well, Portland still doesn't have any decent Mexican food. Completely tasteless, bland, and uninspired... how can even hot sauce be so boring? It's all the normal Cisco fixings with no flavor. At least Matador actually uses spices and real cheese, instead here we get partially rehydrated "vegetables." I'm embarrassed for that carrot to have even found it's way to this orange rice mush. A couple months back I was pleasantly surprised to be walking along 21st and pass a new open restaurant (a rare occurrence in much of Portland these days, sadly: most spots close and stay vacant). We finally had a chance to try it, and to say, "I wasn't disappointed," would be an understatement -- rather, the only disappointment was that it wasn't packed on a weekend. Good Mexican food in the heart of Portland is exceedingly rare (bordering on extinct these days) -- and in over a decade of living in PDX, this is the closest I've come to the San Francisco Mission District taquerias I've been longing for (worry not, dear reader: I may have moved from California, but the only real estate I'm buying is... well, none, ever: I guarantee I'm more broke than you). In short: the prices are reasonable (almost unheard of in this inflationary era of nonsense -- and quite unexpected in this area), the guacamole and salsa has flavor (this should not be a shock -- and yet), and the burrito was refreshingly solid (Chipotle this is not). Oh, and check the happy hour -- because it's all day, every day. This place deserves your business. read more
