El Chisme Sabroso food truck
Craig C.

Cute little neighborhood food truck with a permanent space, located on Thurman near 26th in Slabtown (Across the street from the Thurman market). Simple little menu, but the portions are good. One thing I hate about food trucks these days is that the portions are small but the prices are restaurant prices. So I like that I get a lot for my money. I ordered the asada burrito ($10) and it was big enough to have for two meals. But good! Very friendly and courteous. If you're in the Slabtown hood, give it a try. Tell them "that guy" referred you. ;)

Odd location, more than decent overall.

What stands out is the cleanliness of the cart, attractive marketing, and fair prices. The breakfast burrito was decent, but it included boiled cubed potatoes (I swapped for the beans which shouldn't be included in the first place.) Hashbrowns, tots, or even mashed make for a much better breakfast burrito. The habanero hot sauce was hotter than I expected. The counter person was very nice and order execution was very quick.

OMG Yum I've got nothing but amazing things to say about this new food truck. The prices are very fair, the menu has quite a few options and the service is outstanding Check it out 100%

You would hardly know this place would be so good because it's so small but it truly has some great Mexican food! We got the wet burrito and the chilaquiles and both were so yummy. The service was also really quick with food coming out in less than 10 minutes after ordering! Only downsides are there is a $0.50 fee if you pay with credit/debit and there's no seating but the food's worth it! They also have homemade dog treats for fur babies!

Asada fries, tacos of asada, carnitas, chorizo and pastor.

Great food truck. We mostly get burritos and tacos but their tamales are great too. Friendly service always and a nice cart in a great spot.

The food is fine but not great. The tacos are very small. I prefer the place up towards the park a few blocks off Thurman.

Wow, what a great spot on Hawthorne for delicious and fresh Mexican! The people working here are so…read morenice, it seems like they are a family run business. The young woman taking orders was so helpful and friendly, as was the rest of the staff. My wife loved her carne asada torta, which was delicious and the telera bun was so crazy soft! I had a fantastic chile relleno burrito and we also got a couple quekas, which I'd never had before but were also delicious. It was one of those places where I had intended to take some pictures to use in a review but everything looked so good we ate it all before I remembered I wanted pictures! Highly recommend, give them a try!

Both the fish and the prawns were cooked in a red sauce that was delicious! I meant to ask for blue corn tortillas but was so excited to find shrimp & fish tacos that weren't deep-fried that I forgot to ask for them. The regular corn tortillas were excellent, though, so it was not a bad mistake to make. I also had jamaica to drink and let me tell you... it was not made from a mix! It was dark, thirst-quenching, and perfectly made. Most jamaica is super sweet - this was not! I love the flavor of real hibiscus and this did not disappoint. My friends had chile relleno bowls and birria tacos, all of which was excellent. Their watermelon margaritas were tasty and refreshing! Our orders were taken by a helpful person at the cash register and the food was served quickly by a friendly server. The inside and outside areas were clean and tidy, with plenty of seating available at the outside tables. The outdoor seating area is under cover making it a good choice for both summer & winter dining. Definitely going on my "have to go back and try something else" list!

A budget friendly menu of mouthwatering options. The interior is small and the chairs are uncomfortable, but people are standing in line and spilling out onto the patio and into the street for this great food and great vibes.

My…read moregirlfriend and I were running errands yesterday evening, and decided to order some burritos for pick up when we were done. And to be honest, we were debating whether to get papi chulo's or not since it was a weeknight and we never eat out on weeknights. Safe to say, it was a mistake. They told her on the phone that our pick up order would be ready in 10 min. I walked in there 15 min later to get it, and it was not ready. The gentleman helping me out when I walked in looked like he had zero idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the pick up order name. He then immediately walked away from me and went to the register, and proceeded to ask me what I ordered and at this point, I knew he didn't know what it was and he said, "oh, it will be ready in 7 minutes." I ordered only 3 Breakfast burritos with no meat or anything in them - so, I thought 7 min wasn't too bad. Boy, was I wrong. It actually took 20 min (yes, 20 min) with me standing there by the table until the order was ready with no number or anything. I'll remind you all that there were legit 2 other customers in there and ONE CUSTOMER received their order before our 3 breakfast burritos were ready! That isn't right. I get sometimes food takes awhile, but both of them didn't apologize or anything while I was waiting. I've been to Muchas Gracious waiting for my order before, and they offered me a free drink because they felt bad they were having me wait 5 min! I don't accept it because I felt bad, but the point is, the lack of accountability and customer service during this experience was dreadful. And to be honest, the times I've been here, they haven't ever been too nice to me. After the order was finally ready, the lady working by the grill stuffed in at least 10 plastic containers of hot sauce into my bag. When we got home, most of them opened up and it left the biggest mess in the bag! Come on guys. This was just bad. Plus, my burritos were greasy anyways and tasted off. (See picture of the mess). I won't lie, there's plenty of other Mexican restaurants and establishments I can go to other than Papi Chulo's. Pretty disappointing experience overall and I can guarantee you I won't be going back anytime soon. I'd give the experience a 1/10 and the food a 2/10.
