There have been four student deaths during this school's four-year existence, but I am only going to speak about the three friends and fellow students we lost within the span of eight months, throughout which I received little to no meaningful support. When the first student passed away, people were shocked. Some teachers genuinely tried to empathize with us. Others seemed to have difficulty recognizing the magnitude of what had happened, especially if they did not personally teach the student. Tests and assignments continued almost immediately, even while students were trying to process that someone they knew had died. The second student's passing happened over winter break, and returning to school was incredibly difficult. Once again, we heard the same things: "We care about you," "Call 988," and "Go to the Wellness Center." I have not been to the Wellness Center this year, but last year, my experience with it felt about as useful as going into an empty room and talking to an AI agent. This year, a few of my friends told me that when they went seeking support during the first week of school, they were told that this suicide was essentially a short dip in the road ahead. Are you serious? Is that seriously what you tell a grieving teenager who is actively looking for support? Resources like the Wellness Center and 988 matter, but simply having resources does not automatically make students feel supported. Grief does not disappear because someone gives us a phone number or because a day has passed. There is an immediate response, and then everything returns to normal. Classes continue. Tests continue. Expectations continue. We are not robots. We cannot grieve for one day and be completely fine the next. The third death occurred during the first week of this school year. This time, I have seen teachers genuinely trying to understand what keeps happening. Some teachers themselves have been deeply affected. I want to make it clear that this is not an attack on our teachers. The overwhelming majority care. Some are incredible at showing it, while others care but struggle to know what to say or do. My frustration is with the larger environment we have created. The academic pressure at this school is on another level. Anything short of a 4.0 GPA can feel like failure. Students feel pressure to take as many AP classes as possible, participate in extracurriculars, build the perfect résumé, get into the perfect college, and somehow balance everything else. I have personally intervened with three different students who were in crisis after doing poorly on tests. That should tell us something. And the pressure does not only come from school. Parents need to be part of this conversation too. It is easy to say mental health matters after a tragedy. It is much harder to live by those words when your own child comes home with a grade lower than expected. Students should not be made to feel like failures because of a test, a B, a C, or because they did not meet somebody else's definition of success. Bullying and student culture also need to be addressed. We cannot demand kindness and compassion after someone dies while ignoring cruelty, exclusion, harassment, and pressure while students are still here. Then there is the school's infrastructure. Emerald is a beautiful campus, and I am genuinely fond of the building and its resources. But its population appears to have been severely underestimated. Even during the first year, with fewer than 1,000 students, parts of campus felt crowded. Now, with four grade levels, passing periods can become so packed that students are regularly pushed around while trying to get to class within eight minutes. Emerald has good teachers, strong resources, and a beautiful campus. But those things mean very little if students are suffering underneath the surface. Four deaths in four years should concern everyone. Three deaths within eight months should force us to ask difficult questions. We need to seriously examine academic pressure, bullying, parent expectations, student culture, meaningful mental-health support, and how our school responds to grief. We cannot keep responding for a few days and then waiting until something happens again. Students should not have to lose another friend before adults decide something needs to change. Emerald and DUSD, we expect more. Please listen to us. Please take this seriously. Please do better. And to the teachers who truly care: thank you. You have helped and saved more students than you realize.

The time spent with dealing with flip model should of been spent with studying for the SAT and ACT her junior and senior years. More importantly, this model has left a negative impression along with a sense of instructional abandonment for math at DHS. I wrote an email to the Board President and DHS Principal with cc's regarding ongoing concerns regarding the flip model used for math with cautious optimism. I have cut and pasted my response for your read: I appreciate the email response regarding raising awareness/concerns of the Flipped Model learning for precalc/trig at DHS and I am confident favorable adjustments will occur. My motive is to be critical of the process, not the people. Be transparent, please post your DHS results on flipped learning on the district website (grades, student feedback, test scores) scrubbed in a manner that protects the identification and let the students/parents decide if they want precalc/trig with instruction or flipped model. This will allow full disclosure and allow the students decide if you have a winner or a flop. As educators, please ask tough questions of, "Why and is it working for the student?". The flipped model needs to mitigate against instructional abandonment with some hybrid alternative. e.g. sending students to the hub is entirely not effective and "I hate math now" is a reality. I leave the mitigation and tough questions to the Board members, supervisor and education professionals to discuss and answer. I am a supporter of DHS and a music band boaster supporter. A lot of good education is occurring but I raise the question around flipped learning. I still remember the first time I visited the school and met Mrs. Amina, the director of the Early Education program in Pleasanton. She personally took me on a tour of the campus, showed me each of the classrooms, and allowed me to visit a couple of classes while the children were busy learning. I remember very clearly the first impression I had when I walked into those classrooms: the children looked happy, engaged, and present. One detail that particularly stood out to me was that each classroom had a "Student of the Week," and part of that student's responsibility was to greet visitors and introduce the class. It may seem like a small thing, but to me it said so much about the philosophy of the school. It was clear that Stratford was not focused only on academics, but also on teaching children manners, responsibility, respect, confidence, and how to interact harmoniously with others. Over the years, I have especially appreciated how the school builds confidence through knowledge. The children are exposed to a wide variety of subjects and develop an understanding of the world that gives them topics to discuss, questions to ask, and the confidence to participate in conversations with others. I have also been very impressed by Stratford's history and geography curriculum. I appreciate that these subjects are introduced in a meaningful way from an early age, helping children understand not only where places are, but also the people, cultures, and events that have shaped the world around them. For our family, this broader education has been very valuable. Another aspect we truly appreciated was the opportunity to choose Mandarin as a second language.
