Disclaimer: This review is strictly based on the food and not the service! I genuinely need someone to explain to me how this place has such great reviews because I'm so confused. This doesn't make sense. The menu is overpriced for what turned out to be very mediocre food. I ordered the California Crispy Chicken, which was three stacked pancakes with a fried egg, bacon, and a piece of fried chicken, served with French fries. Sounds promising, right? NOPE. The chicken was dry and slightly burnt. The fried egg? Completely fell apart, ummm how does that even happen?! It somehow blended in with the pancake. Neither the chicken nor the egg had a pinch of seasoning. No salt, no flavor, NOTHING! Just dry and bland. The lettuce in between the pancakes was wilted and soggy. Gross! The pancakes... no condiments, no butter, no syrup, just dry stacks. I didn't even bother asking for ketchup for my fries because that's an American thing. As for the drink, I ordered a honey iced macchiato. The honey settled completely at the bottom and wasn't even mixed/blended in. My first sip was like drinking straight honey, overwhelmingly sweet! Also, this place is cash only. They were upfront about it upon arrival. I only came here because we saw people lining up in the morning for brunch. Tourist trap? I am American originally from Orange County , California so walking in I found a familiar vibe. I had fallen the day before in Paris and needed to find a dentist. After going to two offices that could not help, I needed to eat some breakfast before continuing. Because of my situation I needed something soft with no chewing. I was greeted by the kindest woman greeter who spoke English. She saw my banged up face and ushered me to a small table with a couch which she told me would be comfortable. I explained my need for soft food and she recommended porridge and helped me select what she thought was the best choice. It was wonderful! Very tasty, smooth and warm on that cold, wet morning. Hermosa Beach Shoestring hash browns with fried onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese and a couple slices of bacon on top. The hash is wilted and so thin so at first, you might mistake it for sauerkraut. This spot was around the corner from our hotel so proximity and the California themed menu drew us in. Arrived around 9:30 on a Wednesday and we were seated immediately. A smaller/cozy dining area with a mix of regular and high top tables. Decor was Cali themed also (I.e Palm Trees) We scanned our Digital menus to order which had an English option. Ordered a Cafe Crème coffee (bold and strong) and a large Cappuccino. Freshly squeezed Orange/Apple/Ginger juice was delicious. For breakfast, it was Hermosa Beach-went with soft scrambled eggs instead of fried. Hearty given the hash browns and bacon (crispy). An abundance of fried onions on top of those Hash Browns. Wow! As a native Californian, I was delighted to find an authentic CA experience. The food was excellent! Had some time to kill before check in so I walked down the street to this place. As a once Californian, now living in Texas, it was nice to see the names and think of home! The staff was so kind it felt like home :) the place is cute and easy to spot. It's cash only but there's an ATM across the street. The food is super good! This cafe/diner happened to be attached to the hotel we stayed at in Munich. It gets a lot of walk in traffic right off the busy sidewalk for people grabbing coffee (espresso or cappuccino) and a pastry. However, they offer a Western-style breakfast menu that brought me in, as I am a devout carnivore and I need my protein. The kids were all very delighted with their selection of pancakes, and everything was very tasty. The main host, who may be the owner, is extremely pleasant and speaks very good English. The convenience to our hotel made it the no-brainer go-to for our several days stay in Munich, and the service and food quality was very good. But, it came with a hefty price tag. The dining space is set up to have an Americana ambience, complete with 90's R&B. It is very clean. It can get pleasantly noisy as the cafe fills with patrons, and seating is set up for smaller groups of 2 or 4. Today is our last day in Munich, so we had to have one last breakfast at the California Bean. This restaurant is a true gem. The food is delicious and the staff is very conscientious. We have been here for 5 days and have had breakfast here 4 times. Depending on our trip schedule, we either have a light breakfast or very hearty, California Bean offers both exceptionally well. The owner is a true delight. She never stops moving. We have had numerous conversations with her about Munich and life in Germany. She also helped navigate us in the right direction on our first day.
