I know what you're probably thinking when you walk through the doors- you're judging this place. You're thinking, "Well, this place doesn't look like much and it's in the middle of nowhere. Hope the food is good. It got good reviews on Yelp." And it IS! I was pleasantly surprised to find that the food at Calico's was pretty good, indeed! My dad and I were passing through on our cross country trip from California to Kentucky and wanted a restaurant with some variety. Calico's looked pretty good so we decided to give it a go. It was around 4pm when we arrived so we were the only diners there aside from one other table. The place is large and doubles as a gift shop. The dining area is pretty spacious and there is also an additional, separate dining room for overflow and private parties, I'm guessing. Calico's has a decent sized menu and a good selection of foods to choose from. I was going to get a salad bar, but it looked a bit dismal. I wasn't sure how long the stuff had been sitting out and the selection of veggies wasn't great so I decided to order an Oriental chicken salad. My dad got the salad bar and we also ended up ordering a side of fries with brown gravy and a slice of cheesecake. My salad was fantastic. I didn't care much for the 'Chinese vegetables' on it (baby corn, tiny pearl onions, carrots, etc) but that's just personal preference. The teriyaki chicken on it was great. I also loved the crunchy wonton strips and the Mandarin Orange dressing. My dad also ended up enjoying his salad bar dinner, which also included soup. He told me that the clam chowder was pretty great. The fries that we got came out piping hot and were the fat steak fries- the best ones. Paired with the brown gravy, it really hit the spot. The cheesecake was good but nothing special. It may not have been homemade but that was okay by me! The service here is fantastic. Our waitress was very friendly and made us feel comfortable- almost as if we were family. I would definitely come to Calico's again. Went here on a whim since our original plans fell through. My husband and I both ordered the prime rib. I had the smaller cut. It was done just how I like it medium with no blood. The best was the baked potato it was still hot when it came out. Done to perfection. We added the salad bar and it was the best. So refreshing to have a salad before the meal. Lots of choices for toppings and dressing. Our server was supper funny and man she was BUSY!! She was very attentive to us. Cute gift shop too. I bought several items. read more

My wife and I were visiting my brother and his wife they just moved there and we were looking for a nice place to eat in Calico's's was referred to us by his realtor the waitress was really nice but the confusing part was we had a cocktail waitress so I didn't know how it worked whether you leave a tip for both or one they shared but the cocktail waitress was not very friendly as a matter fact she was quite grumpy I don't expect people to be walking around with a fake smile all the time but if you're in the service industry you should be at least pleasant and the food was mediocre at best. I would like to add onto this review for it was incomplete and was not fair to calicos. My wife sister-in-law and sister and brother liked their meals very much I had a patty melt and it could've been toasted and the onions could've been grilled better but I was being nitpicky because of my attitude with the cocktail waitress my apologies to the owner of calicos I know these reviews are important and when I go to visit my family there again I will definitely go to calicos. I love a cozy, Mom & Pop restaurant. We recently moved to Kingman and was looking for a new cafe to hangout. I can say that Calico's will definitely be our next hang-out. We walked in and immediately loved the place. It's decorated with western paintings and something about the overall decor and layout made us feel very at home. It's an older place, with bigger windows and furniture, but it's well kept up and very clean. The best part was a salad bar! Everything was fresh and delicious and priced very reasonable. Very disappointing. We both had the New York Strip steak. Little to no flavor and tough. Seemed as if it had been in the freezer for months. The sweet potato fries were just ok. This is a local favorite for my family and club special event dinners. They have a large dining room and buffet. There are also two adjacent rooms that will seat up to 40 people for large gatherings. The servings are generous, prices fair and the service is excellent. One of our family members left a billfold in the restaurant recently. We received a phone call, a miracle in itself in this age of cell phones with no phone book listing. The billfold, still intact, was delivered to our home by an employee. A must stop if you are traveling from Vegas to Phoenix or vice versus. Cozy homemade food and reasonable prices. They not only have a soup and salad bar but a dessert bar too. My order was a take out order. The service while placing my order over the phone was terrible. I was told it would be ready in 5 min and when I showed but at the 15 min mark it was not done and I had to weight more 20 min. This restaurant evokes memories of my childhood family diner from the 70's. The decor is definitely cozy and country. Menu offers something for even the pickiest eater. I had a light dinner of baked potato and parmesan crusted chicken breast. Which was just enough to fill me up. My partner had a Scorpion sandwich which wasn't as deadly as it sounds. Grilled turkey with a jalapeno and pepper jack cheese served on a ciabatta roll. Served with choice of regular or sweet potato fries. They also had a good soup and salad bar. 2 soups were available. We didn't try the days choices if cheddar broccoli and beef vegetable soups. For an additional charge there is a yummy looking Sundae bar. Lovely service, and I was happy and relieved when I asked to see the ingredients for the salad dressing to make sure there were no allergens in it and they brought out the bottle with no issues. My chicken salad tasted fresh and the chicken itself was fairly tender for a small town restaurant. We enjoyed this restaurant so much we stopped here on the way back as well and so now this is our second visit. The salad bar is small but solid and my family enjoyed the sandwiches. Flat TRASH! Came in for a bite to eat at 8:15 Pm while driving to Phoenix. Was seated promptly. Several other tables were being served but definitely not busy considering the number of employees. Our drink order was taken, not delivered, and after 20 minutes of flat being IGNORED by at least 4 wait staff, we walked out. Went in on a Tuesday night and there were still a few tables occupied. We ordered and the salad came, drowning in dressing, (thank goodness it wasn't for me). We received our food, I had ordered a chili size (I had gotten one before and it had been incredible), but this time, unfortunately, it was underwhelming and subpar. I had also requested that the fries be put on a separate plate but there they were on the same plate. (Sigh) My sister had ordered a French Dip and my nephew, the Chopped Beef Dinner. He had been brought the A-1 sauce, but there was a teaspoonful. We waited until he was almost done with the rest of the meal before she came back by and when steak sauce was requested, he was told that she would look because they were out of steak sauce in the restaurant but she found one last bottle with a tiny bit left. When we were halfway through, the server brought the ticket and stated that they were now closed but we didn't have to rush, but did we need boxes for the rest of our food? I felt like we were given the bum rush like "Here's your hat and the door, what's your hurry". Will NOT BE going back there again anytime soon or will be recommending that place anytime soon. As an aside, we tried to go to the restaurant a few days before, (I work until 7-730pm), and when we arrived about 7:50pm, they had already closed, even though they are posted open until 8:30pm. When you're on the road, unfortunately, fast food is seemingly your only option. Well, I don't eat fast food, so I'm always on the lookout for other options. If you're passing through Kingman, this place is a decent stop. Plenty of parking, big counter for quick service, they've got a salad / soup bar and even had a breakfast / brunch bar. Don't expect the wait staff to know anything regarding the ingredients in their food, but they will check things out for you, begrudgingly. Their BBQ Pork is NOT BBQ, it's pork with BBQ sauce. This place is SERIOUSLY a diamond in the rough. I could stop my review right here because that says about everything... but, I will give you guys the long version!! lol. We were driving route 66 on our way from Flagstaff to Vegas when we stopped at a gas station and were trying to decide where to stop for lunch. This lady at the next pump over suggested this place - she said it was the "best in town"...and that we couldn't miss it because it's "right next door to the Motel 6". Now, I am thinking, if this place is right next door to Motel 6, I don't know if it's the kind of place I wanted to eat, but we had no other ideas, so we decided to drive by and see. From the outside, this place is seriously nondescript - it looks boring and old and not quite run down, but definitely NOT a touristy spot or looking to attract new business or anything like that. BUT, as we drove through the parking lot, we noticed that every.single.license.plate was from AZ and that speaks volumes to me. We went in and the place is like an old Carrows or a small Dennys. Even the chairs are those old fashioned looking wooden ones you would find in an antique store... But, the service was great!! There was 8 of us and not only did they seat us very quickly, we got a lot of attention from our server and there was nothing that we needed that we didn't get right away. And - the most important thing - EVERYONE LOVED THEIR FOOD!!! I had a vegetarian Chipotle Black Bean Burger - which tasted "homemade" and was the best one that I had ever had!! Sweet potato fries were great. My dad had the BBQ Grilled Sweet Potato Fries - which were even better! My mom had the salad bar / buffet that was set out (they had biscuits and grits (!!!) and a whole big selection of desserts). The kids had a grilled cheese and mini corn dogs (off the kids' menu). I can't slam the place, because the service is fabulous, and the food was pretty decent, if bland. Props for red bliss potato salad, made with sour cream and scallions intsead of mayo. Props for the fact that they actually make an attempt to have a few vegetarian options on their menu, including a choice of two types of (pre-made) veggie burgers, one of which is soy free.
