Visited Cali Koi for the first time and Christian was great. Courteous, very knowledgeable, and let us take our time. His koi are all imported from Japan and were excellent quality. He had a wide variety of types. Prices ranged from $35-$600+. The $35 were at least 7 inches long. I bought a 8 in Kohaku that was amazing quality. This is just someone's house. You walk up to a gate that has a doorbell to ring for service. Though the posted sign says business hours are Tuesday - Sunday 10:30am - 5pm, no one answered the phone or service bell at 230pm on a Thursday afternoon. Maybe they were out to lunch? Who knows. First off let me say I absolutely never leave reviews because I think that it's a waste of valuable time. I went here for a few years , spent a lot of money. Yesterday we made an appointment for today at 1:30 PM and when my wife called to warn me that we have an appointment and we shouldn't be late I told her to go get the kids because they would love to see the fish as I have a 6 and 4 year old and a 4 month old daughter. She had to go out of her way to pick my kids up from their grandparents house. Let me mention that today is 102°F. We get there at 1:33 PM and call and call and call and call and nobody is answering the phone or opening the gate. I put all the kids back in the car and leave and then he answers his phone and says that I'm sorry you were 4 minutes late! People like this don't deserve to be in business. He then calls back in 45 minutes and goes off at me...When I told him he is bringing a big problem upon his business he says "bring it"! I never thought Christian would have been this asshole but he really is and he does not deserve my business or anybody else's. I wish I never spend one dollar in his fake store. read more

Although I was not in the market for a koi fish, my local reef store was out of airline tubing. I typed in "fish store" into yelp and found that Cali Koi is just down the street from me. Called the number and was glad to hear that they had the exact tubing available. I headed over to the location and had a great experience. Although this is a residential location and Christian doesn't have many fish here, after a very nice chat, I've learned that he has an amazing facility elsewhere and is able to get the best koi. Christian was super friendly and we chatted about fish generally and about koi specifically. He sure knows what he's talking about. The fish that were there looked incredible in color and healthy. After researching several sites, I came upon Christian Lee Shostle and his Cali Koi in the San Fernando Valley. Although like most, viewing his stock is by appointment only, but he was extremely accommodating. His knowledge of the Koi I would rate in the upper percentage of importers. His stock is truly amazing, and the prices very reasonable. What I also found very positive, was his lack of condescension towards the novice. Rather he was very encouraging to educate. I had a problem with my pond. And many of my koi fishes were dying. I went to his store for help and he was willing to help me. He gave me some medication for my fishes and he also gave tips for the future and how to diagnose problems. He also gave tips on how to care for them to prevent future deaths. He also gave me medication for the fishes and he told me I could pay him later for the medication and for now just care for the fishes as they are dying.
