I've been to every fish store in the LA area, and Golden State Corals is hands-down the best for coral. Their inventory is consistently impressive, and you notice the difference their colors immediately. The staff is both friendly and extremely knowledgeable about tank care, which makes every visit worthwhile. Since they keep a lot of hard coral, you know their saltwater has the right mineral balance. Just be sure to check their hours before you go, and you won't regret stopping by. What sets GSC apart is also what they don't do. They won't sell you stressed corals, and they won't push products you don't need. Unlike other stores that have tried to sell me fish, clams, or corals that were poor matches due to temperature requirements or territorial issues, GSC gives honest guidance. I've also had other shops insist on things like reef roids or cleansing dips when they weren't helpful--something GSC never does. Okay. So I recently got back into the saltwater aquarium hobby, and I'm crazy about reef tanks. I'll start by sayin this place is just flat out awesome. The selection is pretty nuts. It's about the variety. Some stores will put 30 of the same frag out on the shelf, and while it may appear they have a good selection, it's all sorta the same. This place is the opposite. They have SO MANY different varieties of corals, and so many different color morphs. While they may only have a couple frags of that particular morph, the selection blows most stores out of the water. SPS, LPS, Softies, and even a few Non-photosynthetic corals. I was really impressed with how clean the tanks were kept as well. They have a small selection of fish...but it's Golden State CORAL...not golden state fish. This place is dedicated to reef tanks, and that is definitely their focus. One small gripe is store location. It's located in a business park, and you have to drive through an open gate to get in. On the weekends, they close most of the gates so you gotta enter through the gate on Hart street or avenue or whatever it's called...lol. And drive around till you find the right building, and it's suite 113. If you're near the valley, and you're into coral, you gotta check this place out. read more

Small, but super high quality reef store. Excellent selection of beautiful, high end corals. Perfect if you're looking for premium show piece frags with good lineage. My wife and I met the owner, Elliot, who you can tell is really passionate about this hobby and super friendly! He took the time to tell us about each piece we were considering, how he lights his tanks, etc. I picked up a beautiful frag of Utter Chaos palys, a frag of Tubs True Blue Zoas and some green/gold cloves. The general appearance of the store was clean, inviting and relaxing. It's evident that they put a lot of attention to what they're doing. The display tanks are well-stocked and organized. I'm new to the hobby and needs some guidance in selecting corals, Elliot the owner took the time in explaining each coral without being pushy with sales. Their other employee Zack was also helpful in making sure my corals are packaged properly. They have ample selection for every price-point. Hobbyists don't go anywhere else. This store is phenomenal. Although it's SALT ONLY, they are easily the best in LA county. Not only is the service good, but the prices on coral is right as well. They have dozens and dozens of little frags that are $10, the fish are healthy, and the staff want to know about your tank / help you. The place is a little small but they have lots of tanks and fish here. Love it. They're open everyday except Friday so plan on that. read more

Great selection/colorations of corals that you don't see at other local aquarium places. I am always cautious of buying livestock from random places due to coral and fish parasites you can get that can wipe out your entire tank (experienced this from buying at other stores and killed my entire tank) . This place is one of my very very few trusted sources that I would buy from with no hesitation. I have purchased here time and time again with no issues (no flatworms, no ich/velvet), no livestock losses, and corals always open up within an hour. Highly recommended. read more

This shop used to be California Aquariums run by Austin and Elliott. Now Elliott is running it under the new name and he's doing just as great of a job as before. It still has all of the fantastic and beautiful corals and a modest selection of cool fish and other inverts. The corals are at a great range of prices and there's a wonderful variety, so there's something for everyone. Also, all of the staff Elliott has working with him are very nice and glad to help you with what you need. This place is a treasure. Tricky to find, depending on what your GPS tells you to do, but worth it. If GPS takes you to a gate at a weird office complex, you can call the store and they'll give you a code. I came here after visiting another couple aquarium shops in the area, and it made me realize how much the competition sucked in comparison. The place feels like a humble, no-frills laboratory, not a zoo for kids. And the stock is absolutely breathtaking. The staff was all around, busily and happily bantering coral trivia with each other while I browsed, and I got the sense that these folks care a LOT about what they do. And they let me pester them with geeky questions for a really long time. Their business focuses a lot more on aquaculture and locally propagated corals than some of the competitors, which means a whole lot to me, an environmentally conscious hobbyist. Businesses like these need to be supported! A lot of coral imports won't be available to us much longer due to environmental protections, and as it should be - so these guys have the right idea.
