A serene environment and plenty of scenery in the park to make our recent visit worthwhile.

I visited this park on mother's day. They do have lots of green grass area, a lake or the pond ...I don't know if that's the body of water from the delta. American Legion Park is probably the iconic park of Stockton. I'm not saying it's the best park,…read morebut it is the park that most resembles "old" Stockton in that the entire city used to congregate here for the 4th of July decades ago. First, Stockton wasn't always on the wrong side of a population 350k or more. I remember when we were about half that in the early 80's. This park was the premiere location to hang out and just relax. There really isn't much for facilities here. There is basketball, a kids playground and that's about it. The grassy bank protecting the 'hood from flooding is kinda cool because it provides an interesting pathway around the park and the Smith Canal. There are some concrete tables and benches if you want to throw a quick BBQ or just share some beers during COVID. You can fly a drone and get some great pics of Stockton from about 500 feet. You can throw a frisbee and lose in said Canal. You can talk a dog for a nice walk around and double back or shoot all the way to Pershing and make a loop. In short, this isn't the largest, most beautiful, or even the best facilites, but the location matters and this place used to the heart of Stockton when times were a lot better (kid of the 80's, greatest decade ever)!

When it's crazy hot and you're tired of being inside and you want an alternative to the rivers, this is a great local option that's FREE as in paid for by our taxpayers $.

The park has plenty of open green space, mature trees, and shaded pathways that make it a pretty easy walk even on warmer summer days like today. It has a really chill vibe and there is usually a good mix of people and families hanging out in and enjoying the space. There's a lot of community in this area and it definitely shows at the park. It's been a while since we've visited, and this is my first time here since they reopened the pool last year. It was incredibly busy in that area of the park so we made sure to wander over toward the rose garden where it was much quieter. The roses are in bloom and I took a cute photo of my dog in front of them this afternoon. Even though there were a lot of people at the pool area, the rest of the park had plenty of open space. It can definitely get crowded on the weekends or when there are big events, but typically you can find parking on the street all around the park or in the adjacent neighborhood. Just a few steps away. I did also notice the new self-cleaning restrooms that they installed at the park as we were walking by. You can see the digital displays from the sidewalk, but I did not need to use the restroom so I didn't check them out for myself. It's a very interesting concept however and I applaud the city for doing their part to try to create clean, safe spaces for the community.

(Maybe I just came at a bad time) But that's hardly an issue as I keep spares with me just in case. My issue is if your dog is NOT FRIENDLY with other dogs, please either keep it on a leash or don't bring it inside!! I was working off leash inside the dog park with my shepherd. When I see a woman with her hyper and hard pulling pit bull approaching the park. For mine and my dogs safety I put the leash back on my dog. And it's a good thing I did because as soon as the woman entered, she let her dog loose, and that's when he made a B-line for my dog and began barking aggressively and lunging and nipping at my dog. I lifted my dog to keep his face out of the way and tried my hardest to maintain space, but it got to the point where I had to kick her dog and whip it with the end of my leash to get it off of mine. I have nothing against pit bulls don't get me wrong. But if your dog cannot behave or attacks another dog on site, being off leash in a dog park is not a good idea. I'm glad my dog maintained his composure and listened, otherwise it might not have gone off so smoothly... if it can even be called smooth.

While waiting we decided to hit range balls. Could we, NOPE. Range closes at noon on Sundays. JOKE. We finally got a cart and tee'd off. The play was painstakingly slow and we made it 7 holes before our cart died and we had to call and have another brought out. This took nearly 30 minutes to accomplish. We talked to the young kids running the place this day and I told them that they need to talk to their management and get this place in order. Their response, we don't have any management. Clearly obvious from what occurred! We played out the front side and left as the pace was so slow and there was no marshal to help push groups. The group in front of us were playing and hitting like 3 balls off every tee. Ever since you all upped your prices to a ridiculous amount this place has gone downhill. I now know why. We will NOT be coming back out here again and I am sharing this experience and encouraging others to place elsewhere all over social media. I hate to see a course close (city) or not get play but this place clearly needs attention and it is not getting it!

Our pups were rolling around the grass because they were so uncomfortable. We immediately went home and treated them. THIS IS NOT A PARK TO WALK YOUR DOGS NOR PLAY CATCH!!! BE CAREFUL.

It is about 200 yards from the river to the parking lot and slightly uphill (or downhill depending on which way you are headed). In the summer you will encounter lots of people doing bbq and swimming & floating near the shore. The area is always clean and they have a large bin near the parking lot offering life jackets for the kids.
