Hand pulled noodle in beef soup
Kristine N.

After landing in Calgary, my friends and I stopped at Calan Beef Noodle, and it was the perfect place to get a bowl of noodles with the cold weather. I ordered the hand pulled noodles in beef soup and appreciated that you can choose the type of noodle. On the cashier's recommendation, I went with the thin noodles, which were excellent. The soup arrived hot with a well-balanced ratio of noodles to toppings, making it both satisfying and comforting. You can also adjust the spice level and add chili oil to taste. Service was efficient, prices were reasonable, and there was ample seating available. If I find myself back in the area, I would gladly return!

I really enjoyed this noodle place. There is a big parking lot, ample signage, and a welcoming ambiance, making this restaurant a must-try in Calgary. The menu is simple but I could tell every dish was authentic. You order up front at the counter (they take cash and Apple Pay) then seat yourself while waiting for your order to be called. There are meal sets available in case you want to easily add a drink or appetizer. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the beef super tender. I enjoyed the richness of the broth as well. While it's not the best Chinese food I've ever had, I would definitely come back the next time I'm craving noodles!

I really loved these beef noodles. My first meal once I landed in Calgary... and also my last on the way back to the airport. It really was THAT good! I got a #1 and #7 and the flavors were different for both but very good. My favorite was the #7. First time we ordered when we got there and the turnaround time was so quick. They stretch the noodles right in front of you so it's a super cool experience. The second time, I ordered on DoorDash for pick up. It got pretty busy during lunch time the first time I went and there were a lot of people there, but there were no problems with seating. Definitely wish there was a Calan closer to me but will always stop by if I'm the area again!

Really liked this place. The tea egg was good -- super flavorful and not dry at all. Got the Lanzhou noodles with pickled mustard greens. Broth was comforting, beef was tender, and the noodles had a nice bite. The pickled greens added a little sour crunch that made it even better. Would totally come back!

Ordered takeout from here. It came very well packaged and was very good. They had me with the Xi'an style lamb sandwiches. It did not disappoint. About as close as the one I had in Xi'an. My one small nit was that the bun was ever so dry/tough. I also had the thick hand pulled noodles with beef and they were very good as well. The dish was a bit on the salty side, though. I will give props to their service too. I asked for the carrots to be removed and that proved impossible, for very understandable reasons. Rather than just delivering the meal, they called to make sure it was ok. I truly do appreciate the gesture.

BEST. HAND PULLED NOODLES. Dishes: Just get the hand pulled noodles in beef soup dish and you won't regret it. They had one of the best hand-pulled noodles I've ever had. They didn't skimp on the broth either, it was so flavorful. Logistics: -limited, private, parking lot -I believe it's cash only

This is hands down one of the top 5 best hand pulled noodles I've ever had! I order their beef noodle soup and not only was it flavorful, the noodles were incredibly chewy. Food: Writing this review is honestly making me crave their noodles. I love the texture of the noodles and felt that the soup was very fragrant. I usually am not able to take hot chili, but the chili oil they add at the end made the bowl of noodles even better. Service: You order your food at the counter first and then they bring it out to you on the table after. The staff were very nice and I don't really have much to comment on it. Ambiance: The restaurant itself is a bit small. It seems like majority of the people who buy food here take it to go. However, I would say the restaurant probably can comfortably sit around 10 people.

Our first stop in Calgary! We were starving after our flight, and we were craving soup so we decided to stop by Calan Beef Noodle. My friend got the hand pulled noodle in beef soup and my sister got the hand pulled noodle with pickled sour mustard in beef soup which was so freaking spicy. I ordered the hand pulled noodle with soy bean paste since it was kind of warm outside and I was not trying to sweat. The noodle texture was 10/10 and it definitely hit the spot!

I haven't had hand-pulled noodles in ages but Calan Beef Noodle has been on my list to try. They specialize in Lanzhou eats and have a second location in the downtown area. This one is located in a small plaza that also houses Caribbean Choice Foods. We dropped in on a Thursday for a late lunch (around 1:00pm). You go up to the counter to order. There's also a self serve water jug right there. The menu consists of 13 options along with a few appetizers. Four noodle types to choose from (thin, thick, flat & narrow and flat & wide). They also sell their own chili oil jars ($10.99). - Combo A + Hand pulled noodle with pickled sour mustard in beef soup (#2) ($19.99) - we picked combo A for the simmered beef shanks (thinly sliced and tender) and tea egg. Went with the thick noodles, which had a good firmness. We opted for the spicy version which added a touch of heat. The beef itself was a mixed bag of tender and slightly dry pieces. Wish they gave a bit more daikon. However, the sour mustard added a nice contrasting element. Broth was light and clean. - Stir-fried noodle with cumin lamb and vegetables (#9) ($15.99) - the flat and wide noodles had a good elasticity to them but could have had a more toothsome bite. They weren't heavy on the cumin and the pieces of lamb were decent. A couple pieces of broccoli, carrot and bok choy rounded things out. Okay but I've had better. For the price, I want a bit more of everything from Calan. 3.5 stars.

Pretty good authentic Taiwanese food for Canada. After arriving in Canada I looked for restaurants nearby and was super pleasantly surprised to see a beef noodle soup place nearby. The pickle flavor in the soup was a bit strong but overall it was good. The food did come out face but they didn't let you alter the order at all which was unfournate. The restaurant is very small and cramped so don't go there with a large group. Overall a good place to get some food. 8.5/10

Oh my goodness. This place ascended my soul. Vegetarians who love Chinese food, look no further, we got a fantastic meal right here. I got their hand-pulled noodles in chili oil and vegetables. Service was blazing fast - their chef pulled the noodles in 20-30 seconds, threw it in the giant vat of boiling water, and by the time I got back from the bathroom, they already had my bowl ready to go. The flavor was fantastic, the noodles absorbed the chili oil and flavorings like a sponge, and the noodles themselves were perfectly chewy. The vegetables don't quite take on the flavors in the same way, but I didn't mind that because the main attraction was the noodles. If you're visiting Calgary, I would put this place as a must visit. Easily the best meal I had the entire trip.

Seasonal Veggies

Visiting Calgary on a chillier rainy day and was crazing a good bowl of noodle soup. Calan definitely did not disappoint!. you friend and I both got the Beef Braised Noodle Soup. I got the flat wide noodles and she had gotten the thick regular hand pulled noodles. We asked for extra spicy and although the color was there, the chili oil and chili was not actually spicy but that's okay, I didn't mind. Flavor of broth was great and texture of noodles was exactly what I was looking for. For those are are use to hand shaven noodles, Calan is slightly different with their noodle types but I thought equally delicious. We also got two tea eggs and the two seasonal veggies. The veggies i felt were well worth the money, quantity and flavor wise these two appetizers definitely would've cost me more in the US. The place was small but cozy and employees were all very kind. I 100% recommend

Hand pulled stir fry noodles and beef braised noodles
Kathleen A.

First time coming here with my bf. I chose the braised beef noodles and he got the stir fry. Mine was a bit salty for my taste but still pretty good, bf's tasted great and I kind of wish I had his instead ha. The portion size is pretty generous. Place is smaller than I expected. Staff was friendly and fast service. Would come back to try their other menu.

Wakado Ramen was within walking distance from us, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is located on the first floor of a commercial complex with very little foot traffic, and to be honest, I was a little skeptical at first. Surprisingly, the ramen here was actually pretty good! We ordered the recommended two-person set and chose the Chili Goma Ramen, Tonkotsu Shio Ramen, and a plate of gyoza. I had the Chili Goma Ramen, and I was very satisfied with it. The strong, rich aroma of Sichuan peppercorn immediately reminded me of Sichuan Tan Tan Men, but it was blended with goma-style sesame sauce, which softened and balanced the flavor nicely. I thought that was a clever and enjoyable way to present the ramen. The broth was thick and rich, with a slightly bubbly texture on top and plenty of chopped scallions -- visually, always a good sign for the style of ramen I personally enjoy. The flavor was very good as well. The bamboo shoots were nicely marinated: soft, but still with a bit of crunch, turning into little bites of flavorful vegetables after a few chews. The soft-boiled egg was also well executed; I devoured it in one bite and was rewarded with a rich, flavorful mouthful. My only food-related complaint would probably be the noodle texture. The noodles were on the softer, looser side, closer to the texture of instant noodles that require boiling, rather than the firmer, chewier texture I usually prefer at ramen shops. I know some people may actually enjoy that softer noodle style, so I wouldn't say it was objectively bad, but for me, it was the one imperfection in an otherwise enjoyable bowl. The gyoza looked similar to frozen Ajinomoto-style gyoza, so I honestly didn't feel too excited to try it. Since gyoza isn't too difficult to make fresh, that left a bit of a question mark for me. My main complaint was the service. The restaurant only had two occupied tables at the time, but after we were given the menu, we still waited around 18 minutes without anyone checking back or explaining the meal sets. I eventually walked toward the server and finally caught their attention while the server was chatting with coworkers. The service also felt minimal throughout the meal, with items placed on the table without much communication. I understand most items were obvious, but even a simple "Here is your ****" would have felt much more welcoming than placing items on the table without saying anything. A little more attentiveness would have made the overall experience much better. Overall, the ramen itself was better than I expected, especially the Chili Goma Ramen, which I genuinely enjoyed. But the service experience and the gyoza made the visit feel less polished than it could have been.

HOT AS HELL. I've…read morealways been curious about this place, so I decided to venture in. I knew I was at Noodlebox, because it said NOODLEBOX on the sign. As I popped a Tic Tac and entered the establishment to glance over the menu, one dish stood out in particular to me - their Singapore Curry dish. Now, I've been to Singapore and the food there was top notch (and easy for me to math in my head - their exchange rate was almost on par)! Not the hostel I stayed at though, ugh - 32 people in one room, and one shower. Thankfully I can now afford more than $7 a night and no loss to my dignity and/or self-respect for the most part. Hence, the trip to Noodlebox, which at $13 with the TOFU protein addition, would have only been bested if I actually paid in Singaporean dollars. I ordered this dish with the 'Scorching Hot' level of spice. Now, I've had to make 'retail spice' decisions before, and I've been let down on levels that would make Nikki Bella jealous (I'm looking at you, Wendy's spicy chicken burger). I was a man on a mission, with too much bravado and a twinkle of confidence in my swagger. As I brought this (noodle)box back to my car, I noticed it has a radiant glow around it. Now, this could have been delusions from the rancid Tic Tac I just consumed, but more likely it was due to the number of peppers that I could see, peeking through the cracks in the box. My hand started to shake. An uneasy feeling eased upon me. I get back to my office, take my first bite of this red-colored culinary puzzle, and almost fell sideways out of my chair. This wasn't just hot - this was SUN-LEVEL NUCLEAR. My hairline instantly started to sweat. MY HAIRLINE. As my skin turned red, my mouth became hotter than Death Valley and my sinuses turned into acid rain. But I pressed on, consuming this red mush paste as it pummeled my face, my self-respect, and my will to live. Furthermore, what felt like a glowing orb of fire formed in my belly, and floated around my torso for many hours. My eyeballs turned hot. I now knew what the human version of DEFCON Level 1 feels like. If this dish was a video game, it would be Fallout: NOODLEBOX Edition. After traveling through time and space for the rest of the day, I returned to Earth with a warning from the future - thou shall NOT attempt this again, lest ye be judged and whilst return to hallways of Hell's eternal damnation. Satan, I have at thee. If you like warm vacations, here's what I recommend (in order) - Cancun, the Sahara, Hell, NOODLEBOX. That said, the flavor was on point. 10 / 10, would eat there again. 3 / 10 on time traveling though, would take a lower spice level.

It's easy to not even know it's there, if you are traversing the Plus 15's between the two buildings -- you need to sidestep through the doors of "First Alberta Place," and it will be sitting in the back corner: one wall a soup and sandwich counter, and one wall a Chinese buffet. There's nothing here to "wow" you: hand written information on the wall. A pretty limited selection of sandwich toppings. Not a lot of variety of soups day to day. Scowls. And most importantly, they take cash only (I've been burned by this at the register once or twice when I forgot). But you can get a pretty damn cheap lunch here. Seriously -- for the longest time, the large soup was two bucks (or maybe it was even less)? On days where I forgot my wallet and thought I'd starve to death, Apple bailed me out with their two dollar soup (that much change inevitably kicking around my desk and amongst my pocket lint). And you serve the soup yourself, so you can make it as "hearty" as you wish (to hell with the stragglers showing up late -- they can have broth). I was there a moment ago, and soup has gone up to $2.65. It was around $2.00 in 2006 when I started going. Not a bad increase, and still plenty cheap. BLT's were $3.95 today You get the idea: cheaper lunch than what you can brown bag.
