College is almost entirely worthless if you are not going for a hardcore science degree. I had countless friends in the arts and humanities (not science whatsoever) who showed up to class every day stoned and passed with flying colors. This college does not require any effort unless you enroll in one of the few difficult programs (mine was Environmental Resources Engineering). Even the engineering program failed to prepare me for the real world of engineering. The engineering department teaches very little job-related skills. I came out of the program with no surveying experience, very little experience in engineering programs and almost no marketable skills. The engineering department kept hiring women because they were women (most were not good at teaching except Margret Lang), by the end it was quite obvious the entire campus only cares about your identity and not your skills/merit. Outside the program, you can expect hate and racism if you are white (and even more if you are a white male). I was told every day how I was privileged to be born the way I was forced to be born despite my abusive past which no one cared about. It was much more important for the students and faculty to virtue signal and put down white males or ANYONE that possibly disagrees with their ideals. There is no discussion with these people because they label your facts as hate, then bag on you for being white and act like they made a good argument. When I told people I was denied an internship for being a white male, NOBODY cared at all. The students flip out when a black-student gets a parking ticket because that is apparently racist but when I get denied internships based on my race, literally no one cares and continues to bash white-culture even after I say I have been racially targeted. Even one teacher (Malall Attallah) who teaches ethnic studies (which is really anti-white male, anti capitalist, anti-freedom, anti free-speech, anti-christian) did absolutely nothing for me while at the same time complained about how minorities are treated in the social justice classes you HAVE to take to graduate. Campus is pretty but the rest is crap. The students are all smelly potheads, alcoholics, jobless democrats (socialists) that complain that they are not getting enough free stuff while wasting their money on the nasty-shady bars in town. (I am not a republican btw) The homeless are all smelly meth-addicts who stab citizens who don't give them free money (true story look it up, I have a friend that works for the local news). The homeless fight/mug/hurt people daily and the police don't seem to care because dealing with the homeless problem is politically incorrect. Right now, hundreds of brainwashed students are begging big brother to remove the McKinley statue in the Arcata Plaza (which will cost tens of thousands) while all the streets in Humboldt are destroyed, the university is in debt and the homeless run wild and unchecked. These students do not even care how much it costs, or that there is pressing matters because all that matters is destroying western culture, and virtue signaling. No one cares about real issues because all that matters is minorities, women and homeless. If you are none of those three, you are the Universities enemy and they will NEVER give you a voice. My experience with HSU is one of a staff member. I grew up in Los Angeles and my work experience has been solely in the private sector with people who have basic or advanced people skills. I came to Arcata for a personal family reason and had to find work. HSU is the best employer in Arcata/Eureka besides the Police Department or Courts, and I still took a 50% pay cut to move up there... Sucked. Before I tell you why I left, I can tell you that I couldn't have left faster, and when I did (7 months later), I high tailed away, and on approach to the city, was the only one grinning cheek to cheek as I drove back into my beloved LA, on the 405, packed in glorious traffic, consisting of modern and luxury vehicles. Oh the glory! You won't find any luxury vehicles in Arcata... It's silly to say now, but without the comforts of home, I was a fish outta water. 1. The administration of HSU are mostly incompetent, angry, immature and non professional creatures, in regard to both appearance and manners. They are unfriendly, critical, gossiping gargoyles. I was shocked. Aren't they all supposed to be on the silly smoke and all relaxed? 2. Working for a state run institute with unions was like what it must be to work for the DMV. 3. The town is full of: homeless, meth heads, drunks, pot heads and retired hippies from Los Angeles who deny they come from Los Angeles. The people are mean, entitled, and mostly uneducated, hostile, and small minded folk who like to put down people from Los Angeles. I find Los Angelesians to be much more laid back and friendly than any of these turds. 4. If you're not a gun-slangin', pickup truck drivin', beer drinkin' Republican, cow heardin', drug dealer, then you're a drug addicted hippie who moved up here from LA or down from Seattle to breathe fresh air and hug trees. 5. You can't find a car wash, decent nail, hair or skin salon, place to get your legs waxed (because everyone is a hippie and grows all their hair) or decent place to go shopping. They haven't yet imported perfume or deodorant, let alone embraced skin or dental care. Their biggest mall is a Walmart, Sears, Pier 1, Ross, TJ Maxx...... just shoot me now. Dogs on leashes? Nope. 6. The food is for the most part awful, everything is organic, vegan, compost this, recycle that, let your kids run wild in the restaurant because it's "natural". Everything closes at 8 except the bars. 7. Want a doctor, dentist or dermatologist? Go back to LA. Need surgery or a critical care unit? Fly 4 hours to San Fran for it. 8. Want to see a black or Mexican? They're either in the prison or hiding in the red woods, so go back to LA. Like someone else on this site said, nice place to visit, but don't move here unless you fall into any of the above mentioned categories that clearly drove my nerves back to LA. read more

Your typical underfunded college in the heart of yet another coastal California liberal hellhole. Don't plan on getting out of this place in 4 years if you plan to pursue any science degree since the mandatory lab classes will bloat your schedule forcing you to spend an extra couple semesters in order to fit in all the required lectures. I can't say I'm enamored with the curriculum, but you don't find out the meat and potatoes of it until you're 3 years thick in it. Even with taking summer classes every year it still took me a total of 5.5 years to fulfill my biology degree requirements. I ended up being forced to stay an entire semester later just for one final microbiology class I needed. And it was in fall, mind you, meaning I also had to wait through an extra summer and graduate behind the rest of my class. The department chair absolutely refused to let me take the class at another campus over the summer, and wouldn't work with me on taking the pre-requisite class (genetics) at the same time. Just another way for this school to milk more money from its clients, I mean students. I guess I was naive, but when I first enrolled here I didn't know about the culture of Humboldt county. Arcata is a hive for degeneracy. The plaza is filled with the creepiest, filthiest people you will ever meet, and the majority of Eureka is in shambles. The area is so poor the city police have to put advertisements on their cars in order to get enough money to function. The entire area is wall to wall hippies and drug crime. I can only assume employers see "Humboldt" on my resume and their minds instantly associate it with cannabis and label me as just another stoner when I never even smoked the stuff. It's quite frankly gotten to be an embarrassment for me to even list it. The wacked out ideals of the townsfolk naturally seeped their way into the school where you can expect to have teachers throw their planned lecture in the garbage to spend an hour bitching about Republicans the day following a major election. I'm paying a lot of money to learn about biology, not hear the teacher's distorted views on how to handle immigrants. Of course most of the student body eats this tripe up so if you have even the slightest hint of any conservative leanings whatsoever you'll feel like an outcast in this place. read more

If you care for your mental/physical health and financial stability, stay far away from this place. This is the worst school I have ever attended. Only three weeks in and I've already had so many issues with their housing and financial aid departments. I don't think I have ever seen a more greedy, money hungry school in my entire life. I paid a lot of money to attend and was charged two random fees, totaling over $1.5k, which I was never informed I'd be receiving, for my housing once the semester began and now I'm going to have no money as I struggle with finding a job. As I've learned from my roomates and other students, Cal Poly Humboldt loves to charge students additional fees while providing no information or the most vague information possible. I've learned so much about this joke of a school that I wish I would have known before agreeing to anything. In 2023 25% of the students were homeless and the school did absolutely nothing but get police to fine and physicallt assault them; they once allowed a student who sexually assaulted one of their roommates and almost killed their other roommate to continue attending classes, this student was eventually expelled but only due to poor grades; and last year they once again got the police to physically assault students who were protesting. This school can only be described by one word: predatory. This progressive, forward thinking image they've tried to build for themselves is nothing but a facade. The beautiful scenary in the area cannot mask the ugliness of this school's behavior and actions. There is a current situation going on at this school regarding a student and mold growing on the walls of their dorm. The school has been freaking out over the outcome and from what I've heard it'll be the thing that absolutley ruins the school. Let this be a warning to anyone thinking of attending Cal Poly Humboldt, do NOT apply to this school, and if you're currently attending, think of your future and whether you want to continue going to a school that allows these things to happen to students that have worked so hard and paid money to be here. Although I still have the random fees to stress over, I'm relieved knowing that I'll be attending a different school next semester. read more
