They also made sure we were able to figure out a good time to pick up the cake so it wouldn't melt. My experience in the previous day or two contacting bakeries in San Diego was hugely disappointing as it seems most people operating bakeries or cake decor places in the Greater SD area are either incompetent, careless, or both. I have since tried to order cakes/cupcakes for different occasions and every time I call they are too busy or need more notice. It seems they require several days notice for anything even if it's a small cake. I wouldn't appreciate people waiting until the last minute to make an order but the snotty attitude and laugh I get when I call two days in advance for a simple (10 serving) cake is what bothers me. I ordered a birthday cake for my husband 10 days ago with Kimberly (one of the partners of CAKE). Went to go pick it up today and they did not have it. They said they were really busy and must have made a mistake. To their credit, they offered to bake a cake for me but it would take about 1.5 hrs or call another bakery to see if they had a cake. Neither was a good option for me. I was super disappointed and could not believe how this unprofessional incident could have occurred. They did not give me a chance to taste their cake and I had to go home and tell my husband that he would not have a cake for his b-day party. As a die-hard fan of red velvet and all things cupcakes, I saw this clip on the news about Cake and had to give it a shot. For 3 Sundays, I tried to stop by only to see the "Closed" sign. I suppose that I should have looked at the hours on their website. Anyway, it was TOTALLY worth the 4th trip up there. The red velvet cupcakes are DEVINE. The recipe is from scratch, as the owner (I think) who greeted us let us know. We had a really great conversation about cake and things which gave me a sense that she really is passionate about baking. You can tell. The cake decoration of the cake she showed us was beautiful. The cake itself (1 red velvet and 1 chocolate) was moist, tasty, and had none of that weird baking powdery aftertaste that some baked goods have. It was a perfect match with the buttercream frosting. I had the pleasure of working with this fine place for my wedding. Let me just start off with saying that working with Jennifer was really pleasant. They do appointments only, but she was more than willing to entertain our needs, answering a few questions here and there and setting up a flexible appointment for me and my fiance at the time when we decided to walk in. Working with her from then on was easy-peasy~ Moving onto the flavors, they had many we got to taste from, and the final flavors we chose for our wedding cake were super great. We were able to choose 2 different flavors for our 2 tier cake (one flavor for each tier), the strawberry chiffon I believe and the passion fruit. I did like their other flavors such as the red velvet and I think it was like a rose cake or something and my fiance was a fan of their tiramisu. But in the end, we settled for the 2 mentioned previously. Our cake was iced with a white chocolate icing due to the marble design we were going for, and I liked that as well. Moving on to the presentation... this is actually the reason as to why I gave them a 3 star instead of 4 or 5. Me and my husband honestly gave them a very simple design to follow. With all the cake designs they showed us that they made, we assumed this would be easy. We provided them with an image of what we wanted as they had requested. It was basically a 2 tier cake with a white and light gray marble look, and some thin emerald line streaks. I come to the reception on the wedding day and they had delivered the cake as promised and I remember one of my bridesmaids asking "Is this your cake?" and I remember saying "I hope not." They made the marble look with white and light green instead and the white chocolate icing they used to make it was... just imagine getting some cardboard, but instead of cardboard it's chocolate paper and they wrapped the cake up, not really smoothing out the edges and making it look like a finished product. I was very disappointed with the presentation, I thought then and there, I'm giving this place 2 stars (not 1 just because of great service) and ONLY would give them the extra 3rd star if the flavors were as great as during the cake tasting. So to summarize this place up, if you're going for flavors and excellent customer service, go ahead and hit this place up for whatever special event you're going for. If you're gonna be a "bridezilla" or whatever and want everything picture perfect, perhaps think again on choosing this place, or if there's any way for you to see the finished product before the special event, go for it. read more

I recently threw my niece a baby shower and was in a bit of a panic because I found out I needed to plan it literally weeks before!
