Words can't even begin to describe the excitement I feel when I hear someone say, "Let's go to Cake n Bake!" I get this crazy, emotional, cosmic energy that makes me want to jump up and down, cry tears of joy, and yell, "¡Vamos a Cake n Bake!"...and I don't even speak Spanish! I honestly feel like I ate Cake n Bake in a former life and somehow found it again. I could literally eat their cakes every single day. My boyfriend and I discovered Cake n Bake one afternoon after lunch when we were craving dessert. It was easy to find, and street parking wasn't difficult either. (Just be careful crossing the street--the drivers can be a little crazy!) As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly and helped right away. They have a beautiful display of cakes baked fresh daily, with both individual slices and whole cakes, along with cheesecakes. On our first visit, we ordered the Tres Leches cake, Vanilla Berry cake, Carrot cake, Chocolate Cherry cake, and two servings of banana pudding. I couldn't even wait until I got home--I opened the container and started eating in the car. One bite of the Chocolate Cherry cake and I was instantly hooked. The cake was incredibly moist, the tart cherries were plump and juicy, and the whipped frosting was light, perfectly balanced, and not overly sweet. I honestly can't wait for my birthday because I fully intend to order an entire Chocolate Cherry cake just for myself. The banana pudding tasted just like my Yia Yia's (grandma's) homemade banana pudding, which says a lot. The carrot cake quickly became another favorite of mine. Since that first visit, we've already gone back three more times! We've also tried the pear cake, and the spinach cake and honey cake are next on our list. I almost forgot--they also serve coffee and refreshers. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I absolutely love their refreshers. They're made with fresh fruit purée and sparkling water, served in a really nice cup that I honestly wanted to keep. The customer service is just as amazing as the desserts. We stopped by on Father's Day later in the afternoon and were so happy they were still open. I was disappointed because they had sold out of the Chocolate Cherry cake, but the gentleman helping us actually went into the kitchen and made me one. That level of customer service is hard to find these days. I really need to remember to take pictures the next time we go because I want everyone to see what I consider dessert perfection. If you're anywhere near Cake n Bake, do yourself a favor and stop in. Just be warned...you'll probably be back again and again! They have a nice seating area in a cover patio in front and to be honest I can't remember if they have tables inside because I'm always focused on the cakes in the display. read more

The good: I've had this place bookmarked since they've opened! It's rare to find places that make honey cake so I was psyched about this place offering that. I tried the birdie (like honey cake but with custard and chocolate ganache), tres leches with berries, chocolate cherry cake and a hazelnut with vanilla cake. The tres leches was my favorite. The flavor tasted like mascarpone and it was light and not too sweet (the ultimate Asian compliment). I liked their indoor/outdoor space and covered patio area. Water was self-serve. They serve whole cakes for around $60. Individual slices are in small plastic containers. They're walking distance from the beach and you can see the ocean from their patio. The space is bright, modern, and clean. The bad: They seemed to offer some pastries too but they weren't on display (I just saw them on a tray behind the counter). I would've liked more crunch and more nuts in the hazelnut cake. A wafer or crunchy layer would've been great. The interesting: The bakery is Armenian owned but they make honey cake as well (originally Russian, but very popular in other countries too like Ukraine). When tasked with bringing dessert to Thanksgiving dinner with new friends, I knew I wanted to leave this to the professionals. I was so excited to find that Cake N Bake had opened recently in Hermosa Beach! I already had them on my radar because I am obsessed with the look of their honey cake - though that is not what I went with this time. I gave each of my kids the list of cakes to choose from and told them to pick their top three favorites and I would pick the final one! I was surprised that they overlapped two out of three so I made the executive decision to go with chocolate as a compliment to the other items we would be taking. I was so grateful that Cake N Bake are very quick to respond to messages on Yelp so they answered my questions before and after I ordered. I was able to order closer to the date of the holiday too which helped since we needed time to decide what to get. Plus, I love that I could get the cake delivered so I didn't have to run around and be crazy on the morning of Thanksgiving. It showed up in great shape. The Choco-Crunchy Hazelnut Cake was a hit on Thanksgiving! The cake is super moist and I love that the frosting has a good caramel flavor to it that compliments the chocolate cake and feels sturdy holding the cake together. You can tell that the ingredients are better than store-bought cakes based on the texture and flavor. Two days after and I am still enjoying slices of the cake and it still looks pretty and tastes great! When I ordered, I wanted to try the Birdy cake too and split a slice with my daughter. Awesome new little bakery with lots of options to choose from. I think their most popular pics are the spinach and honey cakes but we didn't try those. I shared an oreo with my son and my wife got the panna cotta. Both were good and not too sweet. Oreo cookie and creme were light and tasty. The cake itself was soft but a little dry. I wanted to try the chocolate nuttella so will probably be back for that. Everything is around $7 which is on the pricier side for a slice of cake, but I guess you gotta pay to be by the beach. Parking is just in the residential areas around, so you'll probably have to walk a block or 2, like almost everywhere else around the beach. Staff is super welcoming, kind, and helpful which makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Definitely recommend checking it out if you have a sweet tooth like me. For a second there I thought Nespresso was opening a boutique in Hermosa but what I discovered is that Cake N Bake is a bakery that serves Nespresso coffee AND phenomenally tasty cakes that they create locally. My wife, Eleanor, stopped in to this brand new shop in our neighborhood in North Hermosa located at the Five Corners. This spot has been empty ever since they tore down the old building a put up a new one so we were eagerly anticipating the opening of this new shop. My wife said the owner was super nice. She mentioned that he is Armenian which prompted me to ask if he is from the Southbay or Glendale (quite a long way!). She said the latter and that the family has a shop up there and that this is their second location. She came home with a few goodies, including a small cup sized berry cake -- my wife knows I am a huge fan of the berry cake at Lido Bakery in Manhattan Beach so I was eager to try it. But for a variety of reasons, I didn't actually get a chance to try it until it had been sitting in the fridge for two days. Two days old and never worse for the wear, it was amazing!!! I was in awe. The perfect ratio of buttery cake, to fresh berries, to delicious, whipped cream. Shocked at how incredible this little piece of cake was, I went to their website and read their story. What a great story. I hope they do well in our little town of Hermosa and that our neighbors discover this little gem. Now I have to go try their Honey Cake too which looks incredible. I will update my review after I try that one and maybe a few others (pear cake, spinach cake). What a terrific addition to our neighborhood.
