Due to COVID they're only allowing one person in at a time but you order ahead, you can call and they'll bring it right to your car in a matter of minutes. Sorry, this is one of the few times where I had a completely different experience than the rest of Yelp. I was looking for cupcakes for a bridal shower. After hearing about how great the cupcakes here were, I stopped in and bought the White Chocolate Raspberry and the Salted Caramel. Both looked absolutely incredible, piled with frosting and artfully decorated. However, when I got home and tried them with my fiance, they were just too much. Too much frosting, too much sugar, too much artificial flavoring. The artificial raspberry flavor was bearable, but the salted caramel tasted so strongly of fake butterscotch that I couldn't even finish the cupcake. I like to eat the cake and frosting together and am always looking for a balance of sweetness, but each bite was just too sweet for me. This despite having the biggest sweet tooth among my group of friends. The cake itself was super fluffy with almost a cotton-like texture to it, which is lovely on its own but couldn't stand up to the mountain of frosting on top. I actually threw out both of the cupcakes half-eaten since neither of us wanted them. It sucks to have to write this bad review, because every other part of my experience was lovely. The store was beautiful and spotless. The lady behind the counter was sweet as pie. She packaged up my cupcakes in a lovely plastic carrier with their label on it. The prices are more than reasonable considering how large the cupcakes are. Unfortunately, they weren't the cupcakes I was looking for. I drove all the.way from Middletown, knowing that they are open on Tuesday's. I arrived to find the lights on & door locked. No sign in the window stating the reason. A woman sees me from inside the store and just looks at me. I write a note that I came all the way from Middletown and slipped it under the door. She picked up the note and again just looked at me. Cake Gypsy makes the best cupcakes!!! I've had them 5 times now and they are always fresh. The cake is moist and the icing is perfection. They have so many flavors to choose from. Some of my favorites are the fluffernutter, peanut butter iced with m&ms, pumpkin spice, s'mores, and strawberry. Love the bright atmosphere of this place, very welcoming! There are loads of cupcakes to choose from that would fit anyones appetite! I purchased four cupcakes, all of them were really tasty and perfect size- not oversized like some other places. One thing I was kind of take back from was the service. The girl that helped me seemed unamused that this was my first visit and she pretty much just wanted to know my order and move on, which was odd as I was the only one in the store. I'm not usually one to post reviews especially poor ones at that but I felt very upset and disrespected. I went to Cake Gypsy to get some cupcakes as I was heading to a friend's house later in the evening for dinner. I had tried calling to place an order but no one was answering and at one point I had gotten through and I couldn't tell if the worker hung up or if we got disconnected but I was just about to pay when it was disconnected they had my contact number and I didn't receive a call back. Which was fine because I do know they tend to have an amazing selection during the day so I decided to stop by. I have been the pick up person for my company many times and have no problem going in and picking out a variety of flavors. As I'm heading in I realize I need to find a restroom. I'm 7 months pregnant and it comes on very quickly LOL. I walk into CakeGypsy and remember there was a bathroom when I got stuck in a long line once. I walk over and the door is open so I go in. Lock it behind me. But as I am going one of the workers walks in and then closes the door. It's embarrassing but of course it happens. I wash my hands and head out and she's standing so close to the door and I said "oh I'm sorry!" And she said "just so you f***ing know. THIS is not a public restroom! Maybe f***ing ASK someone" and as she was walking in to the restroom I looked at the door and there wasn't a sign. The door was open. It's not like I was using the restroom and then leaving. My baby just really loves to kick me right there and as a woman I thought she would maybe understand. She was blond with bangs. Not sure of her name. But I was shocked. So I started to walk in to order the cupcakes and she came out of the bathroom and went behind the display walls and was TALKING ABOUT ME to her coworkers saying the nastiest things about someone she doesn't even know. I stood there for about 15 minutes as there was no one in the store and no one helping me. Then, I realize they're all on their phones in the back and talking. That's disgusting. I didn't know phones were allowed around food. All and all it was a disgusting experience and I refuse to ever go back. I told my coworkers about this and as we used to order a lot of cupcakes and sweets we have decided that the CakeGypsy culture and reviews are not something we support. It was the worst customer service experience of my life. At this point, I felt really embarrassed and sad so I left. I was in tears. It was humiliating. read more

I picked up an assortment of cupcakes here for my son's class on their recommendation since they have items that are allergy friendly. I tried a bite of a confetti cupcake and thought it was great! I went back again with my son to try some more flavors. On our 2nd trip the vanilla cupcake had great flavor and the cake was moist. I am not a fan of frosting, so I cannot comment there. The chocolate cupcake however was much drier and didn't have great flavor. I would be interested to try some of the other varieties, but overall they have decent cupcakes. I got a mini salted caramel cupcake with a little homemade caramel candy on top as well as a mini orange cake with orange frosting that tasted just like a creamsicle. When you stop in, try my favorite: the Snickerdoodle, a vegan (made without dairy) cinnamon cake. It's absolutely delicious!! Also be sure to try anything with the mocha frosting. Yum!! Also created by the staff are homemade chocolates and truffles, with an entire wall of the shop featuring other candy treats. The shop also has a coffee and Gypsy Tea bar with over 20 flavors of artisan and organic teas. The shop will also be featuring other bakery items daily and have weekly specials. Cake Gypsy's tremendous success with these treats as well as support from its patrons has led to a wonderful second storefront, which is beautifully decorated and laid out nicely. The only downside of this new location is that it is not handicap accessible. It's a step up from the curb, then a step up to the building's front door, then a step up into the shop. The staff at Cake Gypsy, including owner Deanna, is incredibly kind and hardworking. They make cupcakes constantly, so you know what you get it incredibly fresh, especially with the high turnover since so many stop in!! This place is a great little gem on Rt 44. Its a little hard to see off the road (tip: Its by the UPS), but the selection is massive and the service is great. They let you take your time looking at all the cupcakes, and will make some on the spot in case the one you wanted is out. The prices are pretty reasonable. Keep in mind that they are regular sized cupcakes (no muffin-sized Crumbs cakes here), which is great for sharing. The canolis are also great. While I was there I saw people asking about large orders for birthday parties, which I assume is very popular with them. I'll keep that in mind for my next event. Also, the hours are perfect. Waiting in line while there are multiple workers yet a long line and only 1 or 2 people taking orders seems odd. Super convenient!! I got my friend a 12 pack. Let me tell you there were so many good flavors it was hard to decide! We settled on Somoa, Strawberry Shortcake, Hot Fudge Sundae, Peanut Butter Cup, Coconut Cream Pie, Tiffany, and Unicorn. The Tiffany and Unicorn have basic vanilla flavors but look gorgeous. I highly recommend them for parties! My friend raved about them all. Her favorite was the peanut butter cupcake. Not surprising because she LOVES reeses. She also said the strawberry shortcake reminded her of a strawbery frosted Dunkin donut. They were all so moist and she could not stop raving about them. They made the perfect companion on her roadtrip. Between her and her husband I think they only lasted 3 days. In summary, I would definitely get Gypsy Cupcakes again for any of my CT friends. Great bakery with wonderful cupcakes and cinnamon rolls. For stay at home orders, they're still open and they only let one customer in at a time. The door is locked, you ring and they let you in. You exit out a different door, and then they wipe down and can let the next customer in. They have gluten-free stuff. I talked to them about it but haven't tried any yet. Had a funfetti cupcake- the cupcake tasted and acted like a box mix. It fell apart and was crumbly, and couldn't support the weight of the frosting. The frosting itself wasn't great- while I was impressed at the actual decorations and color, the taste of the frosting left something to be desired. It tasted almost like there was lard mixed in, and wasn't a pure butter cream. I personally wouldn't order from here again. Two stars because it's better then a grocery store cupcake. read more
