I liked that the bathroom has a bathtub - was exactly what I felt like after a long day of travelling. The check in process is simple and the staff are lovely and polite. The restaurant has a great menu and the food is very good. The rooms and the hotel are a whole was very clean and well presented. I would certainly stay there again.

I actually think that the pool table leaves them a little short of seating, but this was the most minor of gripes. The nice bloke running the place keeps the most excellent beers. I was compelled to stay and try all 3! Somerset + Dorset Cottage and the KPA were top beers but it was the Three Tuns 1642 that brought the house down. A seriously lovely flavour to it, chocalatey which was very much at odds with its golden hue! One of the best beers I have had all year!

Inside was still traditionally maintained but looked a little tired. The food in the italian restaurant next door was really tasty and surprisingly reasonably priced. The main bar area was quiet for a monday night, but there was a pianist in the corner and the atmosphere was really cosy, not to mention a good range of real ales that the barman informed me were all local. The room we stayed in was clean and tidy and the staff were all excellent, couldn't have asked for more.

We were treated like royalty, reception booked us in for our evening meal at Castell Deudreath (the more modern hotel and restaurant in Portmeirion Village) and even booked the complimentary taxi service for us so we didn't have to walk up the hill. The meal was superb and the taxi brought us back to our hotel when we were finished. Our room was perhaps a little dated but charming all the same and very pretty and this was all forgotten the folowing morning when we woke up to breakfast in bed and the gorgeous view of the estuary as the sun slowly rose in the sky. I long to return to The Hotel Portmeirion again to fully explore the village and enjoy the tranquility and service we experienced there.

There's everything from Mussels to sizzling skillets, pies and grills. Food here is all homemade and great value. Huge portions too. I had a mixed grill on my last visit which included steak, gammon, pork chop, lamb chop, sausage, black pudding, eggs, onion rings, Tomato, mushrooms, peas and their amazing homecut chips. £9.45. Bargain! My Other half had a burger (again) where he could choose 3 toppings from a list. Also served with chips and was around £6.50. Drinks are very reasonable and this place is a must if you're nearby. It's gaining a brilliant reputation and you'll need to book at the weekend.

The staff was very pleasant, and served us promptly even though there was a huge table full of old people (probably a tour.). Haha, they were about our age. I ordered the smoked hake and chorizo risotto, because I usually love chorizo. But I ended up fishing it out and stacking it on the side, as it was so spicy AND gristly that it overpowered the dish. With it out of the way, the rest of the dish was quite good. My husband had the cow au vin, which was outstanding. I'd return just for that. I was jealous.

Palé Hall Hotel
TL;DR - Sheer luxury in the Welsh countryside…read more We came here to celebrate my partner's recent birthday and couldn't have been happier with our choice. Palé Hall is a gorgeous old house which has been lovingly converted into a boutique hotel - as soon as you come down the drive you realise how unique this place is. Although it's a hotel you feel like you're a guest at a stately home... Mark kept saying he felt like he was starring in Gosford Park. We arrived on a cold day and were greeted on the door and welcome into the gorgeous wood panelled hall where a roaring fire was burning. Staff gave us two glasses of champagne whilst they took our bags up to our room. We were in one of the smaller "classic" rooms, but it was beautifully appointed and spacious - a huge bed, sofa, big wardrobe and a TV hidden inside a mirror! Water, tea, coffee and home made cookies were in the room - plus a bottle of mead! For dinner we ate in the Huntsman's bistro and everything was delicious - I had salmon followed by monkfish and dahl, Mark had chicken liver terrine followed by rare beef. We also had some amazing desserts, followed by coffee and petit fours. We rounded out the evening with a whiskey sat by the fire and it was wonderful. Next morning we had breakfast which was superb - there's lots to choose from but we went for muesli, orange juice and some pastries followed by the full Welsh breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage, mushroom, tomato, laverbread and black pudding. There were a couple of hiccups - our order of toast didn't appear for breakfast, and neither did our morning newspaper - but these were minor and didn't detract from the overall wonderful experience. Great food, amazing surroundings and excellent service.
