Once you get there you get a choice of pork, beef, lamb & sometimes turkey. You can have more than 1 of the meats too. The carvery has every sort of veg dish you can think of. Even mushy peas, sweetcorn, butterbeans if you want that sort of thing on your sunday roast. There is always a massive pile of roast spuds, roast parsnips & a giant pot of gravy. However I just dont get the condiment system, regular supermarket pots of mint sauce, apple sauce, mustard etc. Which isn't really enough for the sheer quantity of people that eat at their carvery. If it's not busy get a drink, some cutlery and bag a table, then go queue for your food. But as I said earlier be prepared for a long wait on a busy day. They do the carvery everyday too weekdays, last time I had a weekday carvery there it was cheaper than the sundays. You can also get a carvery to go, they will put it in a plastic tray. The decor is oldy worldy black adn white pub sort of thing, horse brasses, lots of dark brown wood, sticky carpet in places. Good clean toilets though. Loads of tables everywhere. But massive plus is the outdoor area, it's great. After the plate and meat, all the rest is self service so you can pile it on your plate and have 3 yorkshire puddings :) Well worth trying out this place!

Arriving in Shrewsbury on a Sunday evening is an odd thing as most places are closed. We managed to…read moreescape eating at Ask (which was packed), purely because a drunk informed us about Cromwells. Honest! A hotel/bar/pub/restaurant with a really nice atmosphere, great friendly staff and a wonderful menu. This place was a real find. The menu was varied and suited all our tastes (including the vegetarian in the group). My stater was a parmesan topped pancake stuffed with Shropshire blue cheese and mushrooms - it's sounds simple but it was delicious and very tasty. Main was a Sunday roast - a very upmarket one. The meat was fantastically tender and simply melted in the mouth. My Crème Brûlée dessert was aborted as the chef's blow torch blew up. I was disappointed (as it's a particular favourite of mine). The staff were very attentive though and offered me an orange chocolate torte was a substitute. To be honest I only ordered dessert as I fancied the Crème Brûlée but decided to opt for the torte. I didn't expect two portions on my plate (as an apology for the problems with my original choice). I struggled a bit to finish but finish I did! We decided to have some wine and after deliberating were told our choice of a white Rioja was not possible as it had been removed from the menu. Apparently other customers had commented it wasn't up to scratch so it was removed. We had a lovely wine which was recommended by the bar staff and the crisp notes sat perfectly against the pepper in the gravy/beef. If we had known about Cromwells before we would have gone sooner and possibly stayed there as the staff and the food really were top notch. A must visit for anyone finding themselves tired or peckish in Shrewsbury!

The place is filled will green, huge hollow rhododendrons, wooden steps, follies, tunnels, rocks coloured with copper and branches arching, dripping with berries. The root covered paths are lined with raspberry and bramble bushes, and beautiful views off cliffs and through expanses of corn off to the horizon, leading to caves, grottos and arches. The twisting old trees are fit for tolkien, and I think I'm right in bits of Narnia being filmed here. It's a lot of unavoidable steps, so unsuitable for wheelchairs and prams unfortunately. Best on a dry day to avoid slippery rocks and carved steps, wear sensible shoes, take a bottle of a water and a torch (some tunnels are purposely not lit) and I'd also advise a picnic, partly because picnics are the best thing ever, but also because the tea room is pants!

The creaky floorboards carried through from the hallway to my room and were a little annoying, especially late at night. I was disturbed several times during the night by other rowdy guests, but that was not the hotel's fault and to the further credit of the staff, were quick to tell the noise makers to keep it down when other guests complained.
